#SHOWBIZ: Iconic jingles, heartwarming PSA marked Atilia's entry into showbiz

KUALA LUMPUR: While veteran evergreen singer Salamiah Hassan is best known as the Queen of Jingles, her daughter Atilia Haron has also made her name in singing them.
In fact, some of the country's best-known jingles of all time have Atilia's name written all over them, and these include the iconic jingles for Maggi instant noodles, KFC, Vitagen, and Fernleaf.
"I was one of the kids who first sang the famous Maggi theme song, which goes 'Maggi Mee, fast to cook and good to eat'," said Atilia at the launch of Konsert Gelombang Bahagiaku in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.
"I was about 5 when I first sang jingles, and the Maggi one was perhaps my debut.
"As for the KFC one, which goes 'let's go to the zoo, there are lots of things to do', that happened when I was 12, likewise Fearnleaf, which had a cover of Tan Sri P. Ramlee's song Ibu."
Atilia was encouraged by Salamiah to sing jingles that were tailor-made for youngsters, as she had shown an interest in music as a pre-teen.
"Besides singing jingles, I also starred in the early 1980s' children's variety show Rasa Sayang, which was screened on public holidays such as National Day, and which famously featured a pre-teen Anuar Zain and Datuk Syafinaz Selamat," she said, adding that she did not know them back then.
Atilia, 51, also starred in a heartwarming public service announcement (PSA) about road safety, which was accompanied by a melodious piano piece.
"That PSA came when I was 9, and it showed me in school uniform walking safely along a pedestrian crossing while drivers stopped at the red light and smiled at me," she said, adding that the tagline for the PSA read "follow road safety rules, this girl may be your child".
Atilia said that while her heydays in advertisements are now a thing of the past, she was happy that quite a few of her contemporaries remember her for them.
"I may not be associated with jingles like my mum, and neither was I a child star like Anuar and Syafinaz.
"Nevertheless, I am happy to have made my appearance in commercials and variety shows, as well as jingles for youngsters' products," she said.
Gelombang Bahagiaku is Atilia's first concert with her mother, and it will take place at the Plenary Theatre of Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre at 8.30pm on Aug 16.
The two-and-a-half-hour concert is organised by Mujik World Production and also features guest singers Loque of Monoloque and Mimifly.

Another impact of this initiative is best seen through real-life stories, like Madam Tang Hung King, the 2021 winner from Sibu, Sarawak. A food supplier serving rural communities with MAGGI® and other goods, Madam Tang saw a major transformation in her business after winning the Isuzu D-Max. Not long after, I was even able to purchase a second vehicle for my operations, all because of that first big step with MAGGI®,' she shared. 'I actually knew about the MAGGI® 'Jom Masak & Menang Bersama' contest quite early on but only decided to participate a few years later when I saw it again at the supermarket. Since I regularly buy MAGGI® products anyway, I figured why not just submit my receipt. 'Now, every year, I encourage my friends and family to join. Most of them already use MAGGI® products, so I always tell them, just give it a shot ! You never know how one receipt could change everything.' Harmony runs in the family

A blend of classic ballads and jazz-infused vocals by mother-daughter duo by AKMAR ANNUAR AFTER decades of building their own distinct musical paths, Salamiah Hassan and her daughter Atilia Haron will share the same stage for the first time in a full-length concert this August. Titled Konsert Gelombang Bahagiaku, the show is set to take place on August 16 at the Plenary Theatre, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). It is presented by Mujik Wand Production and marks a rare intergenerational collaboration between two singers whose voices have defined different eras of Malaysian music. While Salamiah is celebrating her 55th year in the industry with a legacy-themed series, this concert is especially significant as it features her daughter not just as a guest, but as an equal. 'This is the first time Atilia and I are sharing a large-scale stage and I'm so grateful for this opportunity,' Salamiah said at the press conference. Atilia, who has long credited her mother as her greatest musical influence, described the concert as a personal milestone. Having grown up watching Salamiah perform, she now sees this collaboration as a way to honour their bond not just as artists, but as mother and daughter. Audiences can expect a blend of their respective styles — Salamiah's classic ballads and Atilia's jazz-infused vocals — brought together in carefully arranged duets and solo segments. Central to the evening is the premiere of a new song, Age Is Just A Number, written as their first official duet. 'This song is a reflection of both of us — two independent women doing what we love with heart and a positive spirit,' said Atilia, who views the track as a statement on defying expectations across generations. The performance will also serve as a live expression of familial intimacy, with the duo sharing stories and harmonies on stage. For Atilia, the most meaningful moment will be singing directly to her mother, something she hopes will resonate with audiences on a deeper level. While the concert promises warmth and nostalgia, its journey to production was far from effortless. Without major sponsorship or corporate backers, much of the groundwork was done independently. Atilia said the show came together thanks to a tight-knit circle of supporters who shared their belief in the idea. 'We only did what was necessary, supported by our friends. Alhamdulillah, there were people who believed and were willing to help,' she said. In a market saturated with high-concept shows and commercially driven events, Konsert Gelombang Bahagiaku stands apart as a personal project shaped by emotional ties and a shared artistic legacy. It is not positioned as a grand farewell or comeback, but as a singular evening that reflects two lives lived through song. Tickets go on sale on May 13 at 10am via Prices are RM350 for Platinum, RM250 for Gold, and RM150 for Silver. This article first appeared in The Malaysian Reserve weekly print edition
