Haider Ali
NEW DELHI: Haider Ali has played just three T20 Internationals, but the 30-year-old left-arm spinner from Lahore has become the heartbeat of UAE cricket after helping his adopted nation script a historic series win over Bangladesh on May 21 in Sharjah — UAE's first ever T20I series victory against a Test-playing nation.
In an exclusive interview with TimesofIndia.com, a visibly emotional Haider reflected on what the milestone meant to him and dedicated his performances to the people who helped shape his journey — his family, his late father and his cricketing mentors.

"I was crying when we won the series. These successes are for my family, for my village and especially for my late father who passed away last year. I haven't met him since I came to Dubai four years ago," Haider said.
"We have struggled together. So, these successes are for all those well-wishers."
Haider, who returned sensational figures of 3 for 7 in the series decider, turned the match on its head in two Powerplay overs (2-1-2-3) that wrecked the Bangladesh top order. Earlier, in the second T20I, he held his nerve with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 15 off six balls and hitting the winning run in a dramatic 206-run chase.

"This is a proud moment, not just for me, but for everyone involved — the support staff, team management and Emirates Cricket Board.

It feels great to perform for your team against a Test nation. Such performances stay in the memory forever," he beamed.
While Haider is just starting his international journey, he believes the foundation for UAE's recent rise was laid in the ILT20 league and under the watchful eye of head coach
Lalchand Rajput
.

"ILT20 gave me everything," Haider admitted. "I was the best bowler in ILT20's development tournament, then became the 'Emerging Player' in the first season.
I bowled well last season too, and from there, got selected for the national team. It's a massive platform — not only for local players but internationals too. Look at Jake Fraser-McGruk from Australia — he came, performed, and got a national call-up. In the next 2-3 years, ILT20 has the calibre to match PSL or other top leagues.

Haider's admiration for coach Lalchand Rajput is equally deep-rooted. "He's played at the highest level for India, and his coaching experience is vast.
Since he joined, the environment has been so positive. He never makes us feel like he's the coach — it's like a family. He backs fighters — players who don't give up. I'm learning a lot from him and hope to absorb more in the future."

Haider's work ethic has also played a big role in his rapid ascent. Aware of the dew factor in UAE's night matches, he adapted in unique ways. "I fill a bucket with water, soak 30-40 balls in it and bowl with them during practice.
So when the actual match happens, I feel no difference. I bowl 20-30 overs a day — because to beat a Test-playing nation, you have to go the extra mile."
He added, "My goal is clear — I've reached this level now and I never want to drop below. I want to leave UAE cricket better than I found it. I plan and train keeping that vision in mind."
Haider Ali
His passion for batting also surfaced during the second T20I when UAE needed 29 off the final two overs.
"I love batting. All bowlers do!" he laughed. "I told myself, 'Haider, today is the day you show the world what you can do,' and thankfully, I delivered."

Haider also heaped praise on the Emirates Cricket Board. "The board is working tirelessly for the players — they're giving us support, facilities and direction. My aim now is to help UAE qualify for the next T20 World Cup and take this team to even greater heights."
With tears of joy still fresh from UAE's series win and ILT20 triumph with Dubai Capitals, Haider's story is not just one of sporting success but of deep personal meaning.
"I think the people in my village were happier than I was," he smiled. "They've supported me so much, and this is for them. For my well-wishers, my family, and most of all — for my father. This is just the beginning."

Glenn Maxwell retires from ODI cricket, calls time on 13-year career

File photo of Australia's Glenn Maxwell. Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell, 36, has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket after a 13-year career that included two World Cup victories, nearly 4,000 runs from 149 matches, and record-breaking performances including the highest batting strike rate in ODI history for players with over 2,000 runs. Maxwell informed selection chief George Bailey during February's Champions Trophy tournament about his decision, citing physical demands and his inability to continue until the 2027 World Cup. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "I said to him right then and there, 'I don't think I'm going to make that'," Maxwell told the Final Word podcast. "I think it's time to start planning for people in my position, to have a crack at it and try and make that spot their own for the 2027 World Cup. Hopefully they get enough of a lead-in where they can have success in that role." Bombay Sport Exchange Ep 5: Shane Watson on IPL, India-Australia rivalry | Part 1 The decision was made before his recent finger injury that forced him out of this year's Indian Premier League. Maxwell joins other Australian cricket stars Marcus Stoinis, Steve Smith, and David Warner in retiring from the 50-over format, creating a significant void in the defending champions' lineup for their title defence. The all-rounder will continue his career in T20s for Australia and hasn't retired from first-class cricket either. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Encontre voos low-cost Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo Maxwell explained that the Champions Trophy games helped solidify his decision to retire from ODIs. "My decision to retire from one-day international cricket was probably more on the back of the first couple of games in the Champions Trophy," he said. "I felt like I gave myself a really good opportunity to be fit and ready for those games. The first game in Lahore, we played on a rock-hard outfield. Post that game I was pretty sore." "We were lucky enough to have a washout against South Africa, where I had a bit more time to have a bit of rest and get myself ready for the next game. The following game against Afghanistan, we fielded for 50 overs on a really, really wet outfield. It was slippery, it was soft, and I just didn't pull up that well." "I started to (realise) that if I don't have the perfect conditions in 50-over cricket, my body just struggles to get through that. It feels like it's a tiring affair just to get through – and almost surviving – the 50 overs, let alone being at my best throughout that 50 overs, and then going out there and trying to perform with the bat as well. I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions. " Bombay Sport Exchange Ep 5: Shane Watson on how IPL gave him a lifeline & his tribute to Phil Hughes Maxwell's career statistics are remarkable, finishing with a strike rate of 126.70, the highest among players with at least 2,000 runs in ODI history. His achievements include 77 wickets at 47.32 with his off-spin bowling and exceptional fielding skills. The highlight of his career was his memorable double-century against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup. Reflecting on that innings in his 2024 book, The Showman, Maxwell wrote: "This was a moment, like Steve Waugh's Ashes ton on the last ball of the day, or Michael Bevan's final four to beat the Windies. One of those events that makes you ask 'Where were you when...'. It was crazy to think that I now had one of these, a moment when Australia was all on board."

PBKS stun MI as Shreyas Iyer special sets up final with RCB for new IPL winner

PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer with Marcus Stoinis (Image via AP /Ajit Solanki) Ahmedabad: Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer unleashed a masterclass under pressure, smashing 87 off just 41 balls (5x4, 8x6) to power his team to an epic win over Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, sealing PBKS' first IPL final appearance in 11 years. Iyer and southpaw Nehal Wadhera played out MI's trump card Jasprit Bumrah without conceding a wicket and stitched together an 84-run partnership that proved decisive after PBKS were reduced to 72/3. Iyer's knock featured three consecutive sixes off Reece Topley and a grand finish with three more maximums off Ashwani Kumar. In between, he showed his finesse by guiding a Bumrah middle-stump yorker to the third-man boundary. Iyer had walked in after the dismissal of Priyansh Arya (20). Iyer's trailblazing knock ensured that PBKS crossed the finish line Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Earlier, Suryakumar Yadav (44 off 26 balls; 4x4, 3x6), Tilak Varma (44), and Naman Dhir (37) helped MI, who were invited to bat first, post a competitive 203/6. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh began with a tight opening over. MI opener Jonny Bairstow (38), realising there was little movement off the pitch, which had remained under covers for over two hours due to intermittent rain, wasted no time in launching Kyle Jamieson for a six over long leg in the second over. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo IPL 2025 Winner Prediction: What Greenstone Lobo's Astrology says In the same over, Azmatullah Omarzai dropped a tough, running chance at short third man after Rohit Sharma mistimed a cut. MI ended the Powerplay at 65/1. Vyshak, introduced after the Powerplay, bowled with discipline. A scrambled seam delivery outfoxed Bairstow's attempted scoop and landed safely in Josh Inglis's gloves. Bairstow's dismissal brought MI's most consistent batter of the season, Suryakumar Yadav, to the crease. He, along with Varma, added 72 runs in 42 balls, with Yadav especially aggressive against Yuzvendra Chahal, who was returning from injury. Yadav swept and lofted the leg-spinner for three sixes before falling to a deep midwicket catch by Wadhera—his fourth dismissal to Chahal in IPL history.' Who's that IPL player? PBKS clawed back with another quick wicket, that of Varma. Naman Dhir (37 off 18 balls; 7x4) helped MI cross the psychological 200-run mark. But they did not account for Shreyas's stunning knock.
