Minnesota lawmaker shot 9 times at his home in 'targeted' attack is in a critical condition

NBC News7 days ago

The Minnesota lawmaker who survived an attack by a gunman on his doorstep is still in a critical condition and has revealed details of the terrifying moment he and his wife were shot multiple times.
Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, released a statement Thursday, obtained by NBC affiliate KARE of Minneapolis, outlining the events in the early hours of June 14.
The Hoffmans continue their recovery in the hospital — Sen. Hoffman is in a critical but stable condition, while his wife is in a stable condition, the statement said.
The suspected gunman, Vance Boelter, is accused of shooting them and killing the state's top legislator, Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz described the shootings as "targeted political violence."
In the statement, the Hoffmans described the night of the shooting, which occurred after they returned to their Champlin home from a dinner. Their adult daughter Hope was also present.
"At approximately 2:00 a.m., we were all awakened by the sounds of pounding on the front door and shouts of someone seeking entry, identifying himself as a police officer," the couple's statement said.
"When the door was opened, all three of us were in the entryway. John initially lunged at the gunman as the weapon was pointed directly at him, getting struck nine times. As John fell, Yvette reached out to push the man and shut the door, succeeding before she was also hit eight times by gunfire," the statement continued.
The couple's daughter then shut the door and locked it before phoning 911.
"Her brave actions and quick thinking triggered the notice to public safety officials that a politically-motivated act was potentially underway," the statement said.
The Hoffmans thanked the medical professionals who cared for them and the law enforcement officers who attended the scene and eventually caught Boelter after what became the biggest manhunt in Minnesota history.
The couple also said they were "heartbroken to know that our friends Melissa and Mark Hortman were assassinated," adding that their daughters went to school together
In the statement, the couple also thanked the local community and Fernbrook School, where Yvette Hoffman works, for organizing a GoFundMe page that has raised almost $200,000 to pay for medical expenses and increased security measures.
Prosecutors said that notebooks found in Boelter's SUV and at his home showed the names of more than 45 state and federal elected officials.
The Hoffmans reflected on the threat faced by public officials and said they understood that public sector figures sacrifice some level of privacy.
"But now we are grappling with the reality that we live in a world where public service carries such risks as being targeted because someone disagrees with you or doesn't like what you stand for," they said.

Prosecutor details Diddy's alleged criminal ‘kingdom' in closing arguments

This is a free article for Diddy on Trial newsletter subscribers. to get exclusive reporting and analysis throughout Sean Combs' federal trial. Today, U.S. government prosecutor Christy Slavik delivered closing arguments to the jury. Slavik, who addressed jurors for nearly five hours, painted a scathing portrait of Diddy, casting the defendant as 'the leader of a criminal enterprise' who did 'not take no for an answer' and 'used power, violence and fear to get what he wanted.' 'It was his kingdom,' Slavik said. 'Everyone was there to serve him.' In painstaking detail, Slavik walked the 12-person panel through the federal government's three charges against Diddy. She asserted that the evidence, when tied together, showed beyond a reasonable doubt that the music mogul was guilty of one count of racketeering conspiracy, two counts of sex trafficking and two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The center of the government's case: drug-fueled 'freak offs.' Slavik detailed how Diddy relied on his inner circle to force ex-girlfriends Cassie Ventura and ' Jane ' into participating in marathon sexual encounters with male escorts. She argued that Diddy's employees carried out an array of crimes to 'make him happy,' including kidnapping, arson and bribery. 'He was able to get away with it due to his money, power and influence, and that stops now,' Slavik said in closing. 'It is time to hold him accountable. It is time for justice. It is time to find him guilty.' 🔎 The view from inside By Adam Reiss, Chloe Melas, Katherine Koretski and Jing Feng We felt nervous energy coursing through the packed courtroom this morning as Diddy's family members took their seats and Slavik prepared to deliver her closing argument. Diddy, wearing light pants and a white sweater, entered a short time later. He looked at his family and put his hand to his heart. At one point, Diddy's twin daughters passed a note to defense attorney Teny Geragos. She handed it to Diddy, who smiled. In the second hour of Slavik's summation, Diddy started to take on a noticeably more downcast appearance. He sat back in his chair with his head down while Slavik detailed the government's sex trafficking charges, looking completely dejected — even defeated. Later, he kept his eyes on the floor when Slavik played the infamous video recording of Diddy kicking and dragging Ventura in a hallway at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles in 2016. PSA: Every night during Diddy's trial, NBC's 'Dateline' will drop special episodes of the 'True Crime Weekly' podcast to get you up to speed. Teen 'half an inch' from death as he's stabbed 10 times in front of girlfriend

A man has been charged with attempted murder after Morgan Hopkins almost bled to death following a knife attack. A rugby player was "half an inch" from death after he was stabbed 10 times in front of his girlfriend on a night out. Morgan Hopkins, 22, from Swansea is in hospital recovering from a 10 and a half hour operation following his brutal ordeal. ‌ Morgan, known as "Hoppy" to his friends and teammates at Morriston RFC, was attacked while waiting for a taxi at the end of a night out in Gorseinon on Saturday with his girlfriend, reports Wales Online. ‌ His family say he was stabbed around 10 times and his surgeon estimated one of the wounds was barely half an inch away from causing him to bleed to death. Morgan has suffered severe, life-changing injuries as a result of the attack, and has endured hours of surgery where doctors had to remove part of his bowel, and sew his tendons back together. Morgan's mother, Victoria Owens Hopkins, described the day of June 22 as "the worst day of [her] life." She said: "In the early hours of Sunday morning my son and his girlfriend were sitting on a bench waiting for a lift home when Morgan was attacked with a knife. "He was stabbed 10 times. At first we thought they were superficial so we were all very relaxed. ‌ "But that turned into 10.5 hours of Morgan having major surgery, where he had part of his bowel removed. He has had to have nerves and tendons sewn back in his arms." Doctors told Morgan's family that if one of his wounds was half and inch in the other direction, Morgan would have bled to death. Victoria said: "Half an inch saved his life. So in all this we consider ourselves very lucky." ‌ The family have confirmed that Morgan's surgeon said it will be a week before they know if the operation was successful, though Morgan has now been moved from intensive care and is in a stable condition. South Wales Police arrested and charged a 20-year-old man for attempted murder and being in possession of a bladed article following the alleged attack. Officers are now appealing for witnesses. ‌ A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "An investigation is ongoing in relation to a serious assault which occurred during the early hours of the morning on Sunday June 22,2025, at The New Lodge Social Club, Alexandra Road, Gorseinon. "The victim remains in hospital in a stable condition. "Twenty-year-old Kane Evans from Gorseinon has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article. ‌ Morgan's rugby team, Morriston RFC, have set up a fundraiser to help cover medical costs, so that he can access private rehabilitation services upon his release from hospital, and not worry about returning to work. A spokesperson for the rugby club said: "Not only does Morgan have physical wounds from this attack, but he will suffer from psychological trauma for years to come. "The purpose of this GoFundMe page is to raise money for Morgan as he's going to be out of work for some time. ‌ "We'd also like to raise some money for Morgan to be able to have some private sessions for physical and mental rehabilitation should he wish to have this. "Our thoughts go out to Morgan and his family during this difficult time and wish him a speedy recovery. See you on the rugby pitch again soon Hoppy." The club's fundraiser for Morgan has raised over £3,000 in less than 24 hours. To donate you can click here, or visit Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
