Coventry High valedictorian to attend Yale with double major

COVENTRY — Mya Ransford, a student who demonstrated countless leadership, academic and athletic achievements, is the Coventry High School Class of 2025 valedictorian. When she began her high school career, becoming the valedictorian was not a goal for Ransford, but she knew she wanted to try her best and work hard. Becoming valedictorian was not entirely a surprise, because she knew her ranking among her other peers, but it never became her goal. 'I think it was more about just learning in the journey rather than achieving the title,' she said. 'It's nice that I got the title, but it was more about learning in school.' Throughout her high school career, Ransford has been involved in different clubs and athletic activities, while maintaining excellence in her academic curriculum. She is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and earned the AP Capstone Diploma. 'It's really exciting. It was a lot of hard work over the past four years, but it was worth it,' she said. 'I thank a lot of my teachers and my friends and family for supporting me and it's just a really good feeling that all this hard work led to this.' She was vice president of the National Honor Society and president of the school's volunteering Albert Schweitzer Club, where she has contributed to organize 'PJ Day' and 'Get Out and Play Day,' as well as helping the school community. In addition to her club's involvement, Ransford was this year's varsity tennis captain. In 2023, she was named Most Dedicated Player, and the following year, she earned the title of Most Valuable Player. She also served as the student representative during the Coventry Board of Education meetings. In the fall, Ransford will be entering Yale University as a double major in Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry and Psychology. Some of her aspirations are teaching and conducting research in the field of pharmacology. Jokingly, she said she decided to go there because New Haven has great pizza. Seriously, she likes the school's philosophy and the opportunities that they offer. 'I like psychology and biochemistry, so if I went to some schools, I might have to give up one of those things to go study the other,' Ransford said. 'But at Yale, they let you explore a whole bunch of different academic interests.' As she enters her college career, she is looking forward to participating in some research, meeting new people, discovering new experiences and bringing all that back to her own community. In the next few years, she sees herself going to graduate school and, eventually, earning a PhD in pharmacology. 'But, you know, things change. I might find a new academic interest that I like and it'll take me a completely different path,' she said. 'And I'm willing to do that.' Her advice to the incoming Class of 2029 would be to take every opportunity that comes their way. She said freshmen should not be scared or intimidated by students who might look more grown up than they do, and she encourages them to talk to these older students, who are here to help new students be successful. She believes that by getting involved in activities and working hard, students can learn a lot of skills that they will need in adulthood. 'I feel like it's easy to just kind of cruise through high school, but if you're willing to work hard and take the AP classes and you participate in extracurricular activities, that'll take you really far in life,' she said.

Kennebunk High grads told to take risks: 'You have the power to change the world'

KENNEBUNK — Kennebunk High School Valedictorian Emilia Ilyas remembers when the question of her future shifted from fantasy to 'evoking anxiety.' 'I unfortunately had to accept that I would never live in a castle,' Ilyas said. Ilyas, speaking to 168 of her classmates at their graduation ceremony on June 8, said much of life is too focused on the future. She encouraged students to embrace the moment on the school's football field as they prepared to stand and receive their diplomas as the Class of 2025. 'Yes, we're actually graduating. It's real. And it's fleeting,' Ilyas said. 'Let's not forget to be here before we go out there.' A total of 174 students graduated from Kennebunk High School this year, and 169 chose to walk, according to Principal Scott Tombleson. Students gathered on the field in front of friends and loved ones as they turned their tassels and tossed their caps. Superintendent Terri Cooper told students that Sunday marked 'not an ending, but a beginning.' She told students to take risks, travel to 'places that scare and excite' them, and apply for their dream job. 'You have the power to change the world,' Cooper said, 'Whether through grand gestures or quiet moments of compassion.' Kennebunk High School graduate Cooper Thompson told students they grew not just academically, but in their ability to adapt and lead through change. He said students have seen their school evolve over the past four years, welcoming new teachers, coaches, assistant principals, and even a new principal in Tombleson this past year. Every year brought a different rhythm, new expectations, and fresh faces, he said. 'Through it all, we didn't just adjust, but we thrived,' Thompson said. 'That speaks to who we are as a class – resilient, flexible and strong.' The day's faculty speaker, history and social studies teacher Rebecca Moy, put a focus on sports as she described the passion with which she has followed the Oakland Raiders since she was a child. She said sports bring out the best in people who strive to compete. She encouraged students to pursue their passions with the same effort many athletes show in athletics. 'To love sports is to understand the value of competition in testing your personal limits and to make a stand for what you've trained for or what you believe in,' Moy said. She concluded her speech, 'This is about the sincere gratitude I have for those graduates who have allowed me to be a part of your lives and let me share the passions I have.' More: Kennebunk High School names top 10% students in Class of 2025 The day marked Kennebunk High School's 150th graduation. Tombleson, hired in August 2024, said he did not take lightly his role as one of about 20 principals who have led the school. Tombelson described the history of Kennebunk 150 years ago — how shipbuilding was in decline in Maine while tourism was on the rise. He spoke about how the first Kennebunk High School graduation might have had families in town for the graduation staying at the Ocean Bluffs Hotel on Cape Arundel, overlooking Walker's Point, 'having no idea the global significance that small spit of land would one day hold.' (It was and still is owned by the Bush family, who produced two presidents of the United States.) Tombelson said they could not have imagined the student body and its community gathering in 2025. At the time, 150 years ago, Alexander Graham Bell had only just invented the telephone. At the June 8 ceremony, students took photos with their cell phones. To build on his point about history, Tombleson asked everyone who graduated from Kennebunk High School to stand up. He then asked those who graduated before the year 2015 to remain standing, then continued to count back each decade until no more were standing. The numbers went back to the 1960s before every person was sitting, the last met with loud applause. 'Together, we can build across generations,' Tombleson said. 'Together, we can renew our hope and faith in the life that is yet to unfold.' Students are headed on diverse paths — some are headed straight into the workforce while others are taking their talents to college overseas. Many are staying local, opting to attend Cuesta College or Cal Poly. The Friday ceremonies signaled the next-to-last of the celebrations for SLO County high school graduates. Central Coast New Tech is the final high school to hold its ceremony, scheduled for Saturday. Mission Prep celebrated its new grads last week, followed by a series of ceremonies on Wednesday and Thursday. Cal Poly's mid-June ceremony will mark the end of the local graduation season. Paso Robles High School saw 414 seniors graduate Friday night, activities director Jennifer Bedrosian told The Tribune at the ceremony. A total of 62 students earned over $337,000 in scholarships to further their education, according to principal Megan Fletcher. Some graduates will disperse to other California universities, including UC Berkeley and UCLA, ten out-of-state schools and one international school, Fletcher told The Tribune in an email. Around 19 students plan on entering the military. The Paso Robles ceremony honored the Class of 2025 valedictorian, Ava Friedling. Friedling is on her way to UCLA to study biology on the path to becoming a medical student. 'Ava attributes her success to maintaining a positive attitude and a passion for her pursuits, believing that optimism and determination can help one achieve great heights,' Fletcher told The Tribune. Paso Robles' salutatorian, Hannah Bourgault, is headed to Cal Poly to study forest and fire science and will join the women's soccer club team, Fletcher said. 'Her secret to success lies in staying motivated through activities she loves and surrounding herself with hardworking and encouraging peers,' she added. Nipomo High School celebrated 186 new graduates Friday night. According to the district, 29 students received scholarships totaling over $173,000. The school also celebrated five valedictorians, the graduation program showed: Zachary T. Lopez Nora Eileen Reid Caitlyn Adora Scott Stephanie Spicer Kody Brayden Stiles Further details on where students will be going after graduation was not immediately available.
