
Brutal honesty can also be good at work
'That accidental event became our proof of concept. We realised that if people like us didn't step up, the gaming ecosystem would never grow the right way," says Gurugram-based Rathee, 46, co-founder and managing director of NODWIN Gaming.
Two years later, Rathee and his co-founder, Gautam Virk, launched NODWIN Gaming to create an ecosystem for esports in India. Gaming was an integral part of Rathee's growing years. He recalls missing an exam at Manipal University while attempting to clear the last level of Dune and building his own local area network when he realised that the computer science coursework was outdated.
But the early days at NODWIN had its fair share of struggles. Funding was a challenge until someone offered them a crore to grow the company. The game changer arrived in 2018 when they received five acquisition offers over a period of six months.
'It's when we realised that this wasn't a passion project, but a legitimate business. We helped build something that didn't exist before us, now exists sustainably and will exist long after we are gone. That's a legacy," he says.
Rathee talks to Lounge about mentorship and why he enjoys picking up new hobbies.
Who do you consider your mentor?
I deeply respect folks like Ralf Reichert who helped build esports from the grassroots and are shaping gaming culture globally.
One major insight you worked on with your mentor's guidance?
Between 2018 to 2020, I'd often get frustrated trying to convince stakeholders that gaming was legitimate. And this mentor simply said, 'You're blessed with an industry that gets younger every year. Don't try convincing those who won't change. Just keep building and the world will change on its own." That advice stuck. Another great piece of wisdom came from my father when NODWIN was still growing. People would say, 'Oh, you just organise events, put up screens, plug in mics and let people play games." That's when my father said, 'Cast longer shadows." His point was simple - if you know what you're building and where it's headed, just focus on doing it better than anyone else.
What does being a mentor mean to you? How do you mentor your colleagues at work?
Being available even without an appointment. Brutal honesty is also key - telling someone it's okay to fail as long as failure is a calculated risk. More importantly, understanding what your mentee wants, not what you think they need.
What's your morning schedule like?
I usually start around noon and work until 4am. With NODWIN present in 22 countries, there's always someone somewhere starting their day. So, I guess mornings are relative.
What are some of the productivity principles you follow that have made your professional and personal life much easier?
I believe in not spending more than 30 seconds on a task on your phone. If something's on your mind, solve it immediately - one minute now saves five later. Don't aim for 99% perfection in delegating, for 60% clarity is often enough to get things moving. I also value time - short calls, quick voice notes and fast problem-solving. Lastly, find competent people, empower them and get out of the way. Be there as their safety net, but don't hover.
What's the one positive work routine you have developed during the pandemic?
Have your meetings virtually, but have your conversations in person. Now, I spend 4-5 hours a day on real-world chats, and keep virtual ones to 30 minutes.
Any book or podcast you would recommend about mentorship and growth?
I've enjoyed The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson, Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa, Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman and Surrounded by Idiots by Thomas Erikson.
How do you unwind? Do you pursue any serious hobbies?
I learn new things, just for fun. With my elder daughter, I'm learning how to paint with acrylics. With a friend, I'm figuring out 3D printing. I'm also building a home lab with Docker containers. Tinkering with the world around me, that's my kind of unwinding.

'Unlike traditional wedding photography, which often focuses on posed portraits and formal documentation, cinematic photography is all about candid moments, atmospheric visuals, and creating a timeless visual story,' explained Ketan Sharma, a wedding photographer. 'It combines artistry, movement, and emotion — offering a cinematic experience that transports viewers into the heart of the celebration.' Sourasish Dutta, a Kolkata-based wedding photographer, said, 'Indian weddings now spotlight the to-be-weds more than anything else. For us as visual artists, it's an opportunity to share the story of their journey through visuals, where photos take the place of words.' He also said, 'We understand their individual stories from the deep, and recreate the same through our lenses. This creates a storytelling effect that is comparable to films only.' Jatin and Yashita from Unscripted Co. echoed this sentiment: 'The cinematic approach is rooted in the authenticity of the day. It's about creating frames that evoke intimacy and nostalgia, the kind of visuals that transport you back to that exact feeling. That's the difference.' According to Sharma, it's a mix of intentional lighting, thoughtful composition, and post-production artistry. 'Dramatic lighting – like soft diffused light or strong backlighting – can help evoke mood. Composition techniques such as leading lines, framing, and depth of field guide the eye. And cinematic editing through colour grading adds richness and atmosphere. Movement, slow-motion shots, and creative angles also play a huge role in making everything feel immersive,' he said. But for Jatin and Yashita, it's not just about technique. 'Connection is everything. Our superpower is empathy; we try to understand each couple's energy and blend into the background to capture natural moments. We always tell them to have fun. The best visuals happen when couples are genuinely enjoying themselves,' they said. 'Absolutely,' said Dutta. 'Wedding photography has become a breeding ground for innovation and originality. Most couples come to us with a clear idea of what they want, and it's rarely something they've already seen. They're always chasing uniqueness. It keeps us on our toes.' 'Honestly, as a Gen Z couple ourselves, we strongly relate to the to-be-weds we speak to when they say they would want to enjoy their wedding day and would want moments captured in a way that feels spontaneous, intimate, and timeless. That's what the cinematic approach is all about. More and more couples are gravitating towards this, and we love it,' said Yashita. 'Shooting with a cinematic approach at weddings presents challenges like unpredictable lighting, fast-paced moments, and limited time for setups. Because everything is live we can't ask anyone to repeat anything,' said Sharma. For Dutta, it depends on the uniqueness of the project. 'For instance, locations can become a challenge if far away, as the journey often leads to misplacement of something important to the bride and groom,' he said. Balancing authenticity with cinematic flair is another challenge Jatin and Yashita mentioned. 'It's easy to get caught up in capturing the perfect shot, but we must remember we're telling someone's real story. The key is to enhance the natural moments with artistry, without making the day feel staged. When done right, these challenges lead to a deeper, more meaningful storytelling experience that creates lasting memories,' they said. Advait Kottary: ‘I did not want the book to sound preachy or academic'
Mumbai-based actor and author Advait Kottary talks about his novel, Siddhartha: The Boy Who Became the Buddha, which has been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar (English) 2025. Actor-turned-author Advait Kottary. What does winning the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar mean to you? Honestly, it is still sinking in. I am deeply grateful for the recognition. It is incredibly humbling to have my novel acknowledged in this way. It is a tremendous honour for me to be placed alongside some of the finest contemporary writers in the country. I knew that the book was in consideration for the award because my publishers had mentioned it a while ago. But when the news finally came through, it felt surreal. More than anything, I am glad that the story seems to have resonated with readers and critics alike. I believed in it deeply while writing it, and this recognition reaffirms that instinct. What was more challenging to write — Siddhartha as a seeker, or the Buddha as a teacher? Both were equally challenging, but in very different ways. Writing Siddhartha as a seeker meant entering that raw, questioning space — the same questions that many of us still carry. It required deep empathy to understand not just what he asked, but why. Writing the Buddha as a teacher was just as delicate. His insights are well-known, but placing them into believable, emotionally-grounded moments was difficult. I did not want the book to sound preachy or academic. Balancing the vulnerability of the seeker with the stillness of the teacher was perhaps the hardest part of the journey. What kind of research went into describing the period, setting and social structures accurately? What did you read in addition to Thich Nhat Hanh's book Old Path, White Clouds, which you have mentioned in some of your previous interviews? Old Path, White Clouds was a constant guide. It shaped not just the content but the emotional cadence of the book. Thich Nhat Hanh's writing opened a doorway for me into the world of Siddhartha, not as a distant, deified figure, but as someone deeply human and curious; someone who struggled, questioned, and ultimately transformed. Beyond that, I immersed myself in multiple layers of research. I spent hours poring over editions of The Journal of the Pali Text Society, which offered valuable insights into language, context, and interpretation. I also referred to translations of early Buddhist scriptures, especially those by Bhikkhu Bodhi and Thanissaro Bhikkhu — both of whom have done exceptional work in bringing ancient Pali texts into accessible English. Their translations of the Majjhima Nikāya and Dhammapada, among others, helped me understand the world view that Siddhartha was surrounded by, even before he became the Buddha. The research helped me anchor the story in its time, but I was mindful not to let it dominate the storytelling. The goal was always to let the imagination breathe while staying faithful to the spirit of the period. Your mother, Gajra Kottary, co-wrote the television show Buddha: Rajaon Ka Raja. Since she had already immersed herself deeply in the story of the Buddha, what advice and support did she offer while you were working on your novel? My mother's support has been invaluable, but what influenced me most wasn't just her knowledge of the subject. It was the way she approaches storytelling. She taught me how to think structurally, how to build emotional arcs, and how to let the silences in a story speak as much as the words. She gave me the freedom to find my own voice but always offered guidance when I needed it. Her faith in the power of story was something that I carried with me through every draft of the novel. How did visiting Sarnath and Bodh Gaya enrich your writing? Visiting Sarnath and Bodh Gaya brought a quiet clarity to the writing process. There is something incredibly grounding about being in the physical spaces where these moments in Siddhartha's life are believed to have unfolded. It wasn't just about historical immersion; it was about feeling the stillness that those places hold. The silence beneath the Bodhi tree, for instance, gave me a deeper understanding of the inner stillness that Siddhartha must have discovered when he sat there. Later, I also travelled to Ta Prohm and the surrounding temples in Cambodia. Though not directly linked to Siddhartha's life, those spaces had a profound effect on me. The way ancient Buddhist structures have been slowly embraced by the jungle — the stone and the roots tangled together — felt like a visual metaphor for the impermanence and interconnectedness at the heart of his teachings. There was a haunting beauty to it, a quiet reminder of how time reclaims everything, and yet somehow the essence remains. That imagery stayed with me, and I think it found its way into the emotional texture of the book. Retelling stories that involve religious figures can be tricky because there is a danger of offending people who are opposed to creative license. Knowing this, how did you proceed with the writing? Very carefully, and with deep respect. I was always aware that I was treading sacred ground. My intention was never to reinterpret the Buddha, but to humanise Siddhartha — without distorting his truth. I relied on research, empathy, and restraint. The hope was to honour the tradition while making space for imagination and emotional resonance. If there was one guiding principle, it was sincerity. In retrospect, which character in the novel were you unable to do justice to? I think that Amrapali, Bimbisara, and Ajatashatru are three characters whose stories stayed with me long after I finished writing. Amrapali, with her grace, intellect, and quiet resilience, is such a compelling figure. There is both power and pain in her journey, which I could only briefly touch on. Bimbisara and Ajatashatru, too, represent such a rich emotional arc as father and son, who were both shaped in different ways by their encounters with the Buddha. Their relationship holds so much love, ambition, betrayal, and redemption. I often felt I was just brushing the surface of their inner worlds. There is definitely a lot more to be said, and I hope I get the chance to return to them in another story someday. What are the pros and cons of using flashback as a narrative technique? Why did you use it? Flashback allowed me to explore Siddhartha's journey as a series of emotional echoes. We do not live our stories in straight lines. Memories surface in fragments, shaped by the present. The challenge was in pacing, and ensuring that readers stayed emotionally grounded. But I chose it because it mirrors how transformation often works — through revisiting the past until clarity emerges. You have acted in shows like Beecham House and Four More Shots Please. If your novel is adapted into a film or a web series, and you are allowed to audition for as many roles as you like, which character(s) would you audition for? Why? Haha, you are really putting me on the spot! Honestly, I would leave that decision to the director. I would be thrilled just to see it come to life on screen with the right ensemble. But if I were to audition, I would aim for the hardest role of all — Siddhartha. Not just because he is the lead, but because his transformation spans so many emotional textures: curiosity, confusion, courage, clarity.
