KOTA KINABALU (July 28): Sabah has recorded a significant increase in Clean and Safe Recognition (BeSS) since the Smoke-Free Clean Premises (BeBAS) initiative was introduced in 2024.
Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya stated that the number of food premises receiving certification has surged from 57 to 95, representing a 66.6 percent increase. This demonstrates that the BeBAS initiative implemented by the Malaysian Ministry of Health (KKM) reflects the commitment of various parties in ensuring food premises are clean, safe, high-quality and smoke-free.
'Starting in 2024 and continuing into 2025, the Sabah State Food Safety and Quality Division has received numerous applications from restaurants and chain food premises across Sabah,' he said.
'This shows a strong commitment from food operators in Sabah to ensure their premises meet high standards of hygiene and safety. These efforts not only boost the confidence of local consumers but also support our growing food tourism sector,' he added during his speech officiating the 2025 Sabah State-Level World Food Safety Day Celebration here on Sunday.
He noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) reports hundreds of millions of cases of foodborne illnesses annually.
'In Malaysia, the 2023 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) revealed a link between dietary patterns and non-communicable diseases. Additionally, food poisoning incidents remain a concern, and we find that a large segment of the population, particularly the elderly and teenagers, lack awareness about reading food product labels,' he explained.
'KKM implements various interventions to ensure the well-being of the people in this country, with the aspiration of transforming healthcare from sick care to health care. This is proven by the implementation of various high-impact programs and initiatives such as certification, recognition, licensing, and various other services by KKM for the food sector in Malaysia,' he elaborated.
Furthermore, he called on consumers to play an active role in ensuring food safety.
'As consumers, we also play a crucial role in this food safety chain. We are responsible for verifying the authenticity of food safety-related information before sharing it. Always enhance your knowledge about food safety and practice the simple concepts of 'Observe and Choose' and 'Look, Smell, Taste'. These are the most basic and effective steps to avoid food poisoning and ensure the food we consume is safe,' he urged.
The 2025 World Food Safety Day Celebration, themed 'Food Safety Science in Action,' is held annually on June 7 to highlight the role of science in ensuring safe food for all.
The two-day program also saw several food premises at the Imago shopping mall receive BeSS recognition plaques as a symbol of their success in achieving the standards.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian healthcare companies recorded RM96.18 million in sales during the International Healthcare Week (IHW) 2025, held from July 16 to 18 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec). The event was organised by UK-based event organiser Informa Markets in strategic partnership with the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) and featured over 800 exhibitors and attracted more than 22,000 trade visitors. In a statement today, Matrade said the Malaysia Healthcare Day Forum, held during IHW 2025, brought together various ministries and agencies to showcase the country's healthcare ecosystem, highlighting strengths in medical tourism, pharmaceuticals, regulatory standards, and digital health. The event was officiated by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, and also present were Matrade chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican and Informa Markets in Asia president and chief executive officer Margaret Ma. Matrade said that 10 Malaysian companies participated under the Malaysia Pavilion, coordinated by the agency, showcasing products ranging from regenerative therapies and diagnostics to wellness supplements and medical disposables. "They successfully generated RM96.18 million in sales, underscoring the event's impact as a high-value platform for international trade and strategic business partnerships in the healthcare sector," it said. Reezal Merican said the initiative has progressed steadily since initial engagements last year, including the inaugural IHW held in Bangkok, driven by ongoing cooperation and development. "Hosting IHW 2025 in Kuala Lumpur marks a transformative leap, as it is not only the largest healthcare trade event in Southeast Asia but also reflects Malaysia's rising stature as a regional healthcare hub," he said. Matrade said that Malaysia's medical device exports grew by 31.6 per cent in 2024 to RM37.03 billion, while pharmaceutical exports increased by four per cent to RM3.04 billion, with key export destinations including the United States, Belgium, Singapore, Germany, and Japan. IHW 2025 also featured four co-located exhibitions, namely CPHI Southeast Asia, WHX Kuala Lumpur, WHX Labs, and Medtec Southeast Asia, along with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Asia Pacific Conference. A total of 125 conference sessions were held during IHW 2025, focusing on topics such as artificial intelligence in healthcare, pharmaceutical developments, and digital transformation.

Malaysian breast cancer cases doubled: Expert

Published on: Wednesday, August 06, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 06, 2025 By: Lorena Binisol Text Size: Panel of speakers at the Breast Cancer Wellness campaign. Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia is seeing a worrying rise in breast cancer cases, especially those detected at late stages. Health experts and advocates are urging for stronger awareness and better screening efforts to help save lives. This was conveyed at the 2025 Breast Health and Wellness Campaign held at Horizon Hotel, here. Kapayan assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang officiated the event, which was jointly organised by the Pink Ribbon Wellness Foundation and Kinabalu Pink Ribbon. Advertisement Leading the call to action was Datuk Dr. M. Devanand, consultant breast surgeon and founder of the Pink Ribbon Wellness Foundation, who said breast cancer cases have increased from 3,000 a year two decades ago to 8,400 today. Even more concerning, nearly 48 per cent of cases are diagnosed at stage 3 or stage 4, when treatment becomes more difficult and survival rates drop. He said that late-stage detection has risen from 43 per cent to 53 per cent over the past 20 years, based on data from the Ministry of Health. 'Despite all efforts, we're still not preventing enough cases or detecting them early,' he said. Advertisement While breast cancer deaths have slightly decreased, the number of late detections remains high. It's estimated that at least seven women die from breast cancer every day in Malaysia, though the actual number may be higher due to underreporting. It was noted no current data is available for Sabah, and the only statistics provided by the Ministry of Health date back to 2016, which are outdated and limit the ability to track progress or changes accurately. Dr. Devanand highlighted that early-stage breast cancer is easier and more affordable to treat, with a survival rate close to 99 per cent or even 100 per cent. However, when diagnosed at stage 3 or stage 4, treatment becomes not only costly and complex but also emotionally overwhelming for patients, many begin to lose hope. 'This is where organisations like the Pink Ribbon Foundation and Kinabalu Pink Ribbon (KPR) play a critical role. We offer not just assistance but emotional strength, guidance and survivorship support to help women reclaim their will to fight,' he said. He also stressed that daily lifestyle choices such as maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and personal hygiene can greatly influence outcomes. 'Simple everyday habits can have a real impact in reducing risk,' he added. The Pink Ribbon Programme is focusing on education and community outreach. The programme encourages routine mammograms for women aged 40 and above and ultrasound screenings for younger women. It also teaches people about breast cancer risks and symptoms to help catch the disease earlier. The campaign also supports survivors, helping them learn how to live well after diagnosis. 'Education is our strongest tool. The risk isn't going away, but with early detection and proper care, we can change the outcome,' he said. Lasimbang, who is a breast cancer survivor, spoke about the importance of supporting women's health. 'We must never forget the strength and courage of breast cancer fighters. They are symbols of hope,' she said. She praised the efforts of the Pink Ribbon Foundation and KPR for handing out RM350 in financial aid to 20 patients, helping ease the cost of treatment. As a policymaker, she promised to keep fighting for better health policies for women, especially in rural and underserved areas. She also highlighted the important role of NGOs as partners in improving healthcare access. Among those present were Dato' Dr Ibrahim Wahid, oncology specialist and council member of the Pink Ribbon Wellness Foundation, Assunta Carolina Antonysamy, council member, Laura Pua, foundation official, Datin Lucilla Pang, founder of KPR, Yong Lee Lee, founder and honorary CEO of the Pink Ribbon Wellness Foundation, Christy Fe Salazar, president of KPR, Yvonne Dumpangol, vice president and breast cancer survivors from across Sabah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
