Suspect at large following sexual assault in Queens apartment building, NYPD says

CBS News2 days ago
A young woman is recovering following a terrifying attack in her Queens apartment on Saturday. Police say a man sexually assaulted her before taking her bed sheets and fleeing.
Residents in the building on 94th Avenue in Jamaica now have their guard up as the NYPD searches for the suspect.
Police said the 23-year-old victim woke up to terror at around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday. An unknown man had somehow gotten into her apartment and then raped her. She was taken to Queens Hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Detectives say the man attacked the victim despite the building having security. Police sources say before he fled, he took the woman's bed sheets. Police are working on the suspect's description.
"So where was the doorman? How did he get in, especially at that time?" one resident said.
Those are questions police have not yet answered.
The attack has left many of the building's residents stunned and with more questions than answers.
"I can't believe this. I can't. In my building. I'm in shock right now. I really am," Diana Henderson said.
"That's terrible. That's terrible. I'm disgusted," resident Ally Adams said.
"I don't know why somebody would do that," resident Tony Italiano said. "I hope they catch him."
Some said the building needs more surveillance cameras.
"As you can see, it only covers the entrance of our building, you know? And there's cameras on the floor. But I don't think that that was enough because he's still out here," Adams said.
Anyone with any information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via their website or via DM on Twitter, @NYPDTips. All calls are kept confidential.

NFL executive warned colleagues of NYC gunman after being shot in back, family says

NEW YORK — A brave NFL executive warned his colleagues there was an active shooter in their Park Avenue Midtown office building when he was shot and critically wounded in the lobby, his family told the Daily News. 'He was on his way home when he got shot,' wounded victim Craig Clementi's father-in-law Robert Hunter said Tuesday morning. 'He was able to call my daughter and he called upstairs too to the NFL offices.' Shane Tamura, 27, toting an M4 assault-style rifle, walked into the lobby of 345 Park Ave. at 6:28 p.m. Monday and opened fire, first fatally striking NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was working his second job as a security officer at the building, and then shooting Clementi, 42, in the back. Two other people in the lobby were killed in the barrage of gunfire. Clementi works in the finance department for the National Football League. 'He was able to call my daughter so she wouldn't be worried and tell her that he was OK,' said Hunter, 70. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Clementi's condition has stabilized at the hospital in a memo to staffers, according to ESPN. 'You never know about something like this, but hopefully he's gonna be fine,' Hunter said. 'He's a great guy.' 'He came through the surgery and there was some spinal damage,' Hunter added. 'He came through the surgery where they stopped the bleeding and they took the bullet fragments out. So nearest I know he's doing well.' Clementi was already on the phone with NFL colleagues when he was hit and warned them to evacuate, New York Times reporter Dianna Russini wrote on X, citing a high-ranking NFL source. He then continued making calls even while medics rushed him to the hospital in an ambulance, she reported. Clementi's wife was visiting her parents in Knoxville, Tenessee, with their three children and has yet to return to New York. 'They were here visiting for a while for the summer,' Hunter said. 'Because of the small children, she's still assessing the situation here.' Hunter said his son-in-law is a stand-up guy dedicated to both his family and work. 'He's just a super, super great dad, super, super conscientious employee,' he said. 'He's really a sharp young man.' Officials believe Tamura was targeting the NFL, noting his suicide note said he suffered from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a brain injury often linked to playing football. Tamura, of Las Vegas, who played competitive football in California when he was young, took issue with the NFL in his note. He never played for the NFL. After killing Officer Islam, and wounding Clementi, Tamura took the wrong elevator to the 33rd floor, home to Rudin Management, where he killed one woman before shooting himself in the chest. The NFL has offices on four lower floors of the building where the shooting occurred. ___________

Sen. John Kennedy shredded for his take on gun control after NYC shooting

Louisiana Republican Senator John Kennedy advocates for 'idiot control' instead of gun control after a gunman killed four in a Manhattan skyscraper — a reaction that has infuriated some social media users. Shane Tamura, 27, killed three people inside a Midtown Manhattan office building Monday using an AR-15-style rifle. He then turned the weapon on himself. In the wake of the tragedy, the 73-year-old Louisiana Republican told Fox News' 'Hannity' on Monday evening that there's no need for additional gun control measures — a response that's enraged social media users. He predicted that some of his colleagues will call for legislation around heightened gun control, which he suggested wasn't necessary. 'We have hundreds of gun control laws, Sean. Maybe thousands,' the senator said. 'We don't need more gun control, we need more idiot control. And I don't know exactly how to do that but I do know this — I don't want to hear anyone feeling sorry for this guy who did this.' 'All you can do at a time like this is be sorry,' Kennedy said. He said he was sorry for the NYPD officer and civilians who were killed as well as the people of New York. 'This is going to cause them to have to live in further fear,' he said. 'I believe there's objective evil in this world and we saw it today,' he added. Social media users slammed the senator for his comments. 'You can't control idiots, never will. That's why gun control is the answer,' one X user said. 'Keep lunatics from getting easy access any f****** weapon they want would be a good start,' another blasted. Yet another quipped: 'You could try to implement policies to prevent idiots from getting guns. Kind of like gun control.' Some made it personal. 'Maybe his constituents can start by electing him out of office,' another wrote. One user suggested: 'Let's get rid of the idiots in office and vote some in who will try new policies and reduce the rhetoric that is sowing division. That's the idiot control we need.' Another succinctly remarked: 'He could start by controlling himself.' As the work day was coming to an end for many in Manhattan, Tamura walked into the corporate building at 345 Park Ave with a loaded assault rifle and began 'spraying' ammunition inside the lobby, police said. The gunman is accused of killing three civilians, including Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, and one NYPD officer: 36-year-old Didarul Islam. ' No words can describe this act of evil: a man who takes the life of others who are innocent. And no words can fill the void that has been left by this tragedy,' New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference Monday. Several New York Democrats have since called for additional gun safety measures. 'Gun violence in this country is an epidemic,' New York Rep. Jerry Nadler said in a social media post. 'The tragic loss of a brave police officer and innocent civilians is far too common. From Columbine to Sandy Hook, from the Tree of Life synagogue to the Pulse nightclub, from Charleston to today's shooting in Midtown Manhattan, we must put an end to the easy access to weapons of war that continue to take innocent lives.' Senator Chuck Schumer remarked on X: 'Thank you to our brave first responders on the scene in Manhattan tonight. I'm praying for everyone affected. We must do more to stop gun violence in America.'

Located in the heart of Greenwich Village, the Stonewall Inn is famed for a 1969 police raid that is widely considered to have birthed the modern LGBTQ rights movement. Sunday night's violence came just after thousands marched through the West Village in celebration of Pride Month. Hours earlier, another Pride celebration at Washing Square Park descended into chaos after a false report of gunfire and an individual deploying bear spray into a crowd sparked a stampede of people running for their lives.
