J-Bay hosts community lunch to spark year of nourishment and hope

The Herald5 days ago
While the world's top surfers took on Supertubes in the J-Bay Open, something equally powerful was stirring on land this Mandela Day; a mass gathering around shared tables, cooked with love and served with dignity.
More than 1,500 residents of Jeffreys Bay and Pellsrus came together at Pellsrus Primary School for the first-ever J-Bay Community Lunch, where a hot meal carried the weight of a much bigger dream: to feed 200 people every week for a year.
Organised during the WSL J Bay Open by The House of Mandela, the Faulkner Family Trust, and a growing coalition of local churches, artists, surf leaders, and residents, the lunch was a call to action, and a grassroots tribute to Madiba's spirit of ubuntu: 'I am because we are.'
Rooted in the philosophy of umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu — a person is a person through other people, the gathering emphasised that true strength lies in community.
'Food grown, cooked, and shared by communities builds lasting bonds more than anything else,' said Kweku Mandela-Amuah, event director and grandson of Nelson Mandela. 'Here, we honour the mothers' recipes, the farmers' soil, and the shared responsibility to care for one another, as we always have.'
At the heart of the experience was home-grown flavour and soul: local gogos who cooked alongside guest chef Hardy McQueen; schoolchildren performed and shared stories; and artists like YoungstaCPT, DJ Doowap, and Don Delicious brought the music.
The lunch was just a start. In a province where one in four households face food insecurity, plans are already in motion to transform the moment into a sustainable feeding programme (at just R5 a meal) powered by local kitchens, rotating chefs, and a growing volunteer network — all fuelled by the values of ubuntu.
'When we break bread together, we break barriers too. This is not charity, it's reciprocal care,' said professional surfer and organiser Joshe Faulkner.

Khutsong celebrates Mandela Day with heartfelt support for people with disabilities

A heartwarming Mandela Day celebration was held on Friday, July 18 at the Khutsong Ext 4 Multi-Purpose Centre. The event was spearheaded by the Kgatelopele Disabled People Forum, in partnership with Utlwelang Basadi, with the goal of uplifting and recognising people with disabilities in the community. The celebration was not just a moment of generosity but a launchpad for long-term empowerment. Attendees received gifts such as clothing, and were introduced to vital skills development opportunities. The two organisations have been working closely to train people in shoemaking, candle and peanut butter manufacturing—skills aimed at helping people with disabilities become self-sufficient. 'We want people with disabilities to know they are seen, valued, and capable,' said Petros Tseule, Chairperson of Kgatelopele Disabled People Forum. 'We are grateful to all the stakeholders who made this event possible and to the municipality for providing the venue at no cost.' Representing Utlwelang Basadi, Motlalepule Masibu shared their vision of inclusive development: 'We feel the need to contribute to initiatives like this because we noticed that many disabled individuals lack access to skills. We want to involve them in our programmes to ensure they can make a living.' The event was also supported by the GBV Brigade from the Department of Community Safety, with stakeholder Lindiwe Busibu delivering a powerful message on gender-based violence. 'We are here to support the disabled and to raise awareness about GBV. We want them to know where they can report issues—whether it's to SAVF, the GBV Brigade, or Victim Empowerment Centres,' she said. The day ended on a joyful note with interactive games for people with disabilities, netball matches for young girls, and a theatre performance by a drama group from Kokosi, Fochville—reminding everyone that celebration and empowerment go hand in hand. The organisers are still appealing for support in the form of resources such as sewing machines and candle-making equipment to continue their training initiatives. Ward 16, 21 teams celebrate Mandela Day with acts of kindness

In a heartfelt act of compassion as part of Mandela Day celebrations, the Ward 16 Task Team dedicated their time to cleaning the home of the Nene family in the Shayamoya area of Ntabamhlophe. This act of kindness went beyond cleaning, as the team also handed over a food parcel to the struggling family, generously donated by the Al-Imdaad Foundation. The mother, who is unemployed and raising a three-year-old child, is not receiving any social grant. The family survives with the help of supportive neighbours. More photos: Meanwhile, on the same day, the Ward 21 War Room team visited the Mlambo family home in Imbabane, Weenen. The team did some cleaning up and provided much-needed support in the form of groceries, a sponge mattress, and a blanket. DA Ward 132 marks Mandela Day with hands-on community clean-up

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ward 132 rolled up their sleeves on Mandela Day to give back to the community through a clean-up and upliftment initiative in Midrand. Read more: Ladles of Love packages love to children on Mandela Day Led by Ward councillor Annette Deppe, DA members, activists, and community volunteers spent their 67 minutes of service starting with a street clean-up on Greig Street. Armed with gloves, weed-eaters, paint brushes, and hacksaws, the group dedicated their time to tidying the area and giving the Angel Tots Academy a fresh coat of paint. 'We did some painting, had Johannesburg Roads Agency install stop signs, and had many activists help cut and gather the grass,' said Deppe. 'We chose Angel Tots because they support the DA, and we also wanted to uplift the crèche – to give it a new touch for the children and the residents who rely on it.' The initiative received support from local businesses, with Spar Vorna Valley donating refuse bags for the clean-up. 'I want to thank all our activists for showing up today,' Deppe added. 'And a special thank you to Spar for supporting us as always in Midrand.' Among those who joined the initiative were DA Gauteng Provincial Legislature member Michael Sun and regional representative Ria Humans. Sun emphasised the community-driven spirit of the day. 'I really want to give a great shout-out to Spar in Vorna Valley. We, as the DA, are out here in Vorna Valley, Midrand today on Mandela Day to give back to the community where we are cleaning the streets, fixing pavements, and installing stop-signage to ensure the traffic is safe.'
