Man Utd's former £175k-a-year body language expert hits back at Jim Ratcliffe
Sir Jim Ratcliffe mentioned Manchester United's six-figure outlay on a body language consultant during a recent interview, and now the individual in question has spoken out
Kirsten Heukels, the body language consultant hired by Manchester United on a £175,000-per-year salary, has defended her role at the club amid criticism from part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Heukels joined the club during Erik ten Hag's time as manager, but was pointed to by Ratcliffe in a discussion of how the club was haemhorraging money when he arrived.
One of Heukels' roles was to help United's players with penalty shoot-outs. Her background was outside football, but during her time the club secured vital shoot-out victories over Brighton and Coventry in successive FA Cup campaigns.
She spoke with United's keepers during her time at Old Trafford, and also met outfield players. However, speaking to The Athletic, she claims there was no direct contact with anyone at owners INEOS.
'I don't look at life this way,' Heukels said when asked about Ratcliffe's comments. 'I believe it was a courageous thing that the team did back then. And I'm proud of what we achieved.
"The achievements are in the data, so they are proven. I don't need to explain that to anybody," she continued. "I don't know enough about him or United today because I'm not involved, but it's always dangerous to talk about your predecessors this way.'
It was back in March that Ratcliffe referenced Heukels' role and salary - albeit not her name - in an interview with The Times. In the same piece, the billionaire opened up on the financial situation affecting the club since his arrival.
'If you think of it in really simple terms, you've got the operating costs, which are all the staff and the fixed costs of running the business," he said. "And then you've got all the squad costs, player salaries and player purchases.
'In super simple terms, the club has been spending more money than it's been earning now for the last seven years, and it ends in a very difficult place. And for Manchester United, that place ended at the end of this year, the end of 2025, with the club running out of cash. I think it's the first time we've probably said that in public, but that's the fact of the matter.'
Heukels, who also credits former United coach Steve McClaren among others for helping her during her time at Old Trafford, predominantly scouted opposition penalty takers. The 2023 Brighton shoot-out win was described as a breakthrough, while she was also in her role when David de Gea made his first Old Trafford penalty save in nine years during a match against Fulham shortly after.
'I look at how they are walking up to the spot,' Heukels explains. 'How their face is holding itself, because you can think you're looking cool but your face will tell me more and you will leak it all. I will look at body language and their interaction with the goalkeeper — whether they are looking at him or not.'

Pep Guardiola confirms two Man City transfer decisions before Club World Cup
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has spoken about the club's squad planning ahead of next season amid speculation over stars about to enter the final year of their contracts Pep Guardiola has confirmed Manchester City goalkeepers Ederson and Stefan Ortega will remain with the club next season. The Catalan coach revealed the Premier League side appear unlikely to dip into the market to improve their options in net. Ederson and Ortega have shared the net at the Etihad Stadium for a number of years, with the former taking the no.1 slot for Guardiola's side. The duo are both set to enter the final year of their contracts however, increasing speculation that a change could soon be on the cards in goal at City. City have little time for rest before they are called upon for Club World Cup duty. Their first match takes place against Wydad AC on June 18. There is an opportunity to move for new players, with a transfer window open until June 10 but Guardiola appears content with his options for the moment. Though goalkeeper was an area of discussion with the club's hierarchy. "We have spoken about the situation regarding squad planning and the two goalkeepers we have will continue," Guardiola told reporters at a golf event in Catalonia on Monday. That did not prevent the ex-Bayern Munich boss being taken to task over Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia. The shotstopper saw an approach by Arsenal last summer, while Barcelona appear to be in pole position for his signature this year, despite reported interest from the Gunners and City. "Joan Garcia is a really good goalkeeper, but City are linked with 500 players in every transfer window," Guardiola said. "He's an Espanyol player and I don't know what happen, but I'm told by the Espanyol guys [playing in the golf event] he's an extraordinary goalkeeper. The references we have are very good." City are already intending on leaving at least two bodies at home for their Club World Cup adventure in the United States. Midfield star Mateo Kovacic is to undergo surgery after nursing a heel injury. The Croatian will miss the tournament and be unavailable until the start of next season. Guardiola had hinted that the club were trying to manage the player's injury when he left him out of the FA Cup final squad as a precaution. The Manchester club are also said to have opted against including James McAtee in their squad. The 22-year-old will instead join up with England's pre-tournament training squad ahead of the under-21s Euros in Slovakia.

'Mateo will spend the summer rehabilitating from the operation and everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery.' Sam Thompson raises more than £100,000 on first day of Soccer Aid challenge
On Monday, the 32-year-old set off from Chelsea's Stamford Bridge stadium in London, the location of last year's charity match in aid of Unicef, and ran a full marathon before cycling a further 23 miles to reach Milton Keynes. He will end the challenge at Manchester United's Old Trafford, which will host the 2025 game that Thompson is due to play in. Speaking at the day one finish line in Buckinghamshire, Thompson said: 'Day one was terrifying. I can't believe I did it. I was so worried that no one would turn up for me, but as I started to approach the stadium and the finish line, I could hear the cheering. Sam Thompson sets off with comedian Joel Dommett on a 250-mile run/bike challenge for Soccer Aid beginning at Stamford Bridge, west London (James Manning/PA) 'I started to get emotional. It means so much to me that people turned out. 'It's been tougher than I could have imagined and there were points when I was really struggling. 'I was in a lot of pain after the marathon, but before I started the bike I was checked over by the physio and medical team, just to make sure I was fit enough to carry on. 'I'm taking one step at a time, one pedal at a time, but I'm going to find a way to make it to the finish and stay focused on why I'm doing this. 'It's to raise as much money for Unicef as we can – to support the incredible work they do for children around the world. That's what this is all about.' Thompson ran 26 miles towards Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, where he then cycled 23 miles further to the first finish line at MK Dons's Stadium MK ground in Milton Keynes. The I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! winner, who has so far raised £100,603.46 for Unicef, was joined by This Morning's Ben Shephard for part of the cycling leg. TV presenter Shephard, 50, said: 'I think Sam is incredibly brave and courageous taking on a challenge like this. I've done some physical ultra-marathons and I know that it takes its toll. 'Mentally it's a really tough battle because for five days he's got to run five marathons then having finished, jump on the bike on top of that. 'What I know and love about Sam is his enthusiasm, his energy and his positivity and that is going to be tested to his absolute limit. Sam Thompson ahead of his Unicef challenge (James Manning/PA) 'He's going to have to draw on all of his experience of meeting the children in Guatemala that inspired him with their joy that got them through all sorts of really difficult things in their lives. 'Sam's got the biggest heart and despite the pain he's going to be going through, I can't wait to see him cross that finish line on Friday and get that ball to Old Trafford.' Thompson was joined at the start line by his sister Louise Thompson, her partner Ryan Libbey, his nephew Leo, and comedian Joel Dommett, who ran with him for the first 20km. From Stadium MK, Thompson will travel to Aston Villa's Villa Park in Birmingham, then on to Port Vale's Vale Park in Stoke-on-Trent, then to Everton's Goodison Park in Liverpool, before finishing at Old Trafford. His journey will be broadcast live on ITV's This Morning and Hits Radio each day, with the star due to arrive at the finish line on Friday June 6. The challenge, which sees him running five marathons and cycling over 130 miles, will also feature in a one-off documentary on ITV1, Sam Thompson's Match Ball Mission, which will air in the lead-up to Soccer Aid for Unicef. Thompson is taking on the challenge to raise money for Unicef's work to help children grow up safe and healthy. Soccer Aid 2025 will take place on Sunday June 15, at Old Trafford, and will be broadcast live on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player.
