Private investigators looking for an American aviation student missing from Palmerston North for more than a week say he has been found.
Massey University student William Henry Johnson, known as Will, was last seen in Palmerston North between 30 May and 1 June.
The 24-year-old's last communication with family was on 5 June and he had not responded to any attempts to contact him since.
His parents hired private investigators to find him and Johnson's mother arrived in New Zealand from Seattle this morning.
On Wednesday afternoon Mike Gillam, of The Investigators New Zealand, said after a tip they received at about 4pm, the investigators successfully located Will Johnson.
"We are delighted to confirm that William has been found and is in good health. He has been reunited with his mother and the family is understandably relieved that this ordeal has come to a positive conclusion," he said in a statement.
Gillam said William was located in Palmerston North following information provided by a member of the public who responded to media appeals for assistance.
Earlier Gillam said that The Investigators New Zealand were working with police.
His disappearance was "really traumatising" for his family, who were distraught, Gillam said earlier.
His company had three investigators working on the matter full time.
On Tuesday, Gillam said it was out of character for Johnson not to have contact with his family for such a period of time.
Gillam on Wednesday said the positive outcome demonstrated the importance of community cooperation in missing person cases.
The family had requested privacy at this time, he said.

The remand prisoner accessed the roof of a unit at Otago Corrections Facility near Milton about 12.45pm on Wednesday. Otago Corrections Facility general manager Dave Miller said the area was contained and within the secure perimeter of the prison grounds. "Staff responded immediately to contain the incident and are currently talking to the man," he said. "There is no threat to the wider security of the prison and no threat to public safety." Fire and Emergency was on site as a precaution given the prisoner was at height, Miller said. Police had offered assistance if required.

Nelson man pleads guilty to 50 child abuse and bestiality material charges

Photo: RNZ A Nelson man has plead guilty to 50 charges relating to the creation, distribution and possession of objectionable material involving beastiality and the sexual exploitation of children. Storm Constable-Carter, 22, appeared in the Nelson District Court today following the investigation by the Department of Internal Affairs' Digital Child Exploitation Team. He was charged with 25 counts of possessing objectionable material, 21 counts of distributing objectionable material, and 4 counts of creating objectionable material. Digital Child Exploitation team manager Tim Houston said the investigation was launched after a video depicting bestiality and an infant was found in a cloud storage location. The file was later found in two separate internet accounts operated by Constable-Carter. "Child sexual exploitation material depicts a crime scene and the worst moments in a child's life. Every time an offender shares or accesses an image or video of child abuse, they are continuing the abuse of that child and exacerbating the threat of child sexual exploitation." The maximum penalty for anybody who knowingly makes or trades, distributes, or displays an objectionable publication via the internet is 14 years imprisonment. The act of knowingly being in possession of objectionable publications attracts a maximum of 10 years imprisonment. In 2024, the Digital Child Exploitation team conducted 69 investigations into child exploitation and helped to safeguard 14 New Zealand children from harm. Constable-Carter will reappear in the Nelson District Court for sentencing in December.
