Dubai's agritech landscape is experiencing a transformative evolution, moving beyond traditional desert innovation narratives.Today, a dynamic ecosystem of startup success stories, robust incubators, and strategic investments is reshaping the food technology sector.Despite ranking as high as =21st globally in the Global Food Security Index (GFSI) according to the most recent 2022 data , the United Arab Emirates (UAE) — and much of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) — continue to import over 85% of their food. This reflects the region's ongoing dependence on external supply chains as of early 2025.This has prompted long-term measures to reduce import dependency, unifying GCC regional strategies to develop agricultural, livestock, and fishery projects that strengthen food security and sustainability.The UAE's approach has been strategic, with agriculture and fisheries now contributing 1.8% to gross domestic product (GDP), and the number of Gulf companies in these sectors growing by 20% At the forefront of Dubai's agritech incubation ecosystem stands in5, TECOM Group's entrepreneurship incubator, which has been instrumental in nurturing innovation. ' Start-ups are the inherent problem-solvers we need to unlock sustainable growth,' stated Majed Al Suwaidi, Senior Vice President at TECOM Group.The launch of in5 Science in 2023, in collaboration with Dubai Science Park, represents a significant milestone in the UAE's science-focused entrepreneurship landscape. This initiative aligns with the UAE's emphasis on sustainability, in line with the Road to Net Zero by 2050, COP28, We the UAE 2031, and National Food Security Strategy agendas, creating substantial opportunities for innovation, investment, and entrepreneurship across the science sectors.Complementing these efforts, Food Tech Valley has emerged as another crucial player supporting agritech startups and facilitating connections between innovators and investors.Among the early movers actively leveraging this ecosystem is Sokovo Nature Farms—an agritech innovator integrating advanced technologies into sustainable food systems from the heart of Dubai. 'We at SOKOVO Nature Farms are deeply aligned with Dubai's vision of becoming a global hub for sustainable food production,' Sumedha Sharma, CEO of SOKOVO Nature Farms, tells EconomicTimes.com.Sharma credits the emirate's supportive ecosystem, particularly Food Tech Valley, explaining how it has played a crucial role in positioning the company as a trusted source of 'locally grown, high-quality produce.'The Emirates Development Bank (EDB) has established itself as a key financial enabler in Dubai's agritech sector, according to official statements. The bank's specialised AgriTech Loans Programme supports advanced farming technologies and precision agriculture practices, reinforcing the government's commitment to innovation.At the Future 100 Forum, Shaker Zainal, Chief Business Officer at EDB, noted that in 2023, EDB's financing to the industrial sector rose by 80%— rising from AED 2.4 billion in 2022 to AED 4.3 billion —bringing the total loan book to AED 8.7 billion since the rollout of its strategic agenda in 2021.Further reinforcing this commitment, EDB's 20-week AGRIX accelerator programme, supports the UAE's National Food Security Strategy 2051, equipping farmers, agribusinesses, and technology providers with cutting-edge solutions, workshops, and hands-on training in sustainable farming practices.The Mohammed bin Rashid Innovation Fund (MBRIF) has proven particularly effective in driving startup success, with MBRIF members securing more than AED 2.8 billion in financing and playing a role in the creation of over 800 jobs in the UAE , according to Majed Al Suwaidi.The role of digital agriculture in Dubai's food security strategy is foundational. As global food technology trends evolve, six rising foodtech megatrends have been identified by the France-based Digital Food Lab, including the resilient farm, sustainable proteins, the smart supply chain, and food automation.Sanjay Borkar, CEO and Co-Founder of FarmERP, highlights the transformative potential of digital agriculture: 'Digital agriculture is not just complementary—it is foundational to the UAE's food security strategy. The UAE's National Food Security Strategy 2051 sets a clear direction: produce more with fewer resources, ensure resilience to climate volatility, and enhance local production capabilities.'FarmERP's implementation in the UAE demonstrates tangible results. According to Borkar, a prominent agritech startup in the UAE managing berry production achieved 'a considerable improvement in yield consistency and a high reduction in water usage' through the FarmERP Agribusiness Cloud platform. Another case involving a leading fresh supply chain company resulted in 'real-time visibility into procurement, logistics, and payments while empowering farmers through a mobile app in the Arabic language.'Dubai's agritech ecosystem has witnessed remarkable technological breakthroughs, particularly in desert agriculture. Indian entrepreneur Chandra Dake introduced innovative sand technology, enabling agricultural cultivation in both desert and saline-alkali environments through his company, Dake Rechsand.This 'breathable sand' technology, commonly referred to as 'magic sand', reduces water requirements by 80% while delivering optimal yields. Dake's company is also developing a forest of 11 million trees across Dubai's barren desert, representing the world's first desert-based afforestation project of this scale funded through private investment.'We are not only reclaiming deserts but also transforming desert sand, which is otherwise deemed unfit … into a material of significant utility,' Dake was quoted in the media The collaboration between Indian entrepreneurs and Dubai's agritech ecosystem represents a significant dimension of the sector's growth. Indian innovators such as Dake and Borkar are bringing technological expertise and innovative solutions tailored to the UAE's unique agricultural challenges.FarmERP's success in the UAE market exemplifies the potential for India-Dubai collaboration in food security. 'At FarmERP, we have strategically evolved our technology to align with these specific local challenges and opportunities,' Borkar tells EconomicTimes.com. 'Our solutions incorporate artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), remote sensing, and satellite analytics to deliver real-time decision support. We've developed specific modules for Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), vertical farming, hydroponics, and greenhouse operations—agricultural models gaining traction in Dubai and across the UAE.'As Dubai seeks to amplify its agritech capabilities through global partnerships, Indian agritech players emerge as natural collaborators.'India's deep expertise in agriculture, engineering, and technology plays a valuable role in supporting SOKOVO's mission to advance the UAE's Food Security Strategy 2051 and Vision 2040. By collaborating with Indian agritech partners—particularly in areas such as automation, sensor technology, and nutrient management—we can enhance the efficiency and scalability of our vertical farming operations. These partnerships allow us to adopt cost-effective, proven technologies that strengthen our ability to produce clean, local, and reliable food year-round,' says Sharma.In turn, this supports the UAE's broader goals of reducing import dependency, diversifying the economy, and building a resilient, homegrown food ecosystem, she adds.As Dubai positions itself as a global hub for agritech innovation, the convergence of government support, private investment, and technological excellence creates a compelling environment for the next generation of food innovators. 'We are proud that one in every three vaccines administered anywhere in the world is developed or manufactured in Hyderabad,' he stated, adding: 'The Hyderabad GCC will integrate Lilly's advanced technology capabilities across key functions, supporting accelerated innovation, enhanced efficiency and improved health outcomes for patients globally.' The chief minister further said that Hyderabad has become the preferred global destination for cutting-edge capability centres of the world's top pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The city is the life sciences capital of India, with the presence of over 2,000 companies, he added. Revanth said that by focusing on areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), automation, cloud computing and software product engineering, the site will contribute to solving some of the world's most pressing health challenges while also creating growth opportunities for local talent. The chief minister expressed commitment to providing a transparent, progressive and innovation-driven ecosystem so that the life sciences industry can grow in scope and change the health sciences capabilities for the entire world. Referring to the Eli Lilly workforce in Hyderabad, he said, 'You are not just living and working in Hyderabad – you are now part of our family. You are shaping the future of global healthcare from Hyderabad.' The company has already onboarded 100 professionals at the 220,000-square-foot Hyderabad facility and plans to expand the headcount to 1,500 over the next few years.

India office market set to cross one billion sq ft of office stock: Report
NEW DELHI: India's total office stock is set to cross one billion sq ft in office supply by Q3 2025, according to a recent report by Knight Frank india. According to the report, the cumulative office stock across the top eight Indian cities stood at 993 million sq ft as of H1 2025. From under 200 million sq ft in 2005 to nearly one billion sq ft in 2025, office supply has grown at a CAGR of 8.6% in the last 20 years. Bengaluru , with 229 million sq ft, accounts for 23% of India's total office stock and continues to lead among metro cities. It is followed by the National Capital Region (NCR) with 199 million sq ft (20%), and Mumbai with 169 million sq ft (17%). These three regions collectively contribute to 60% of India's office supply. Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai together account for 33% of the stock, while Ahmedabad and Kolkata contribute the remaining 7%. Shishir Baijal, chairman and managing director of the company said, "As we prepare to cross the 1 billion sq ft threshold, it's not just a number, it reflects the growing institutionalisation, maturity, and global relevance of India's office market." India's office inventory is currently valued at ₹16 trillion (USD 187 billion). Of this, Grade A office space makes up 53%, followed by Grade B at 43%, and Grade C at 4%. Cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai have a higher share of Grade A assets, driven largely by IT and Global Capability Centre (GCC) demand. In contrast, legacy markets such as Mumbai and NCR have a more balanced distribution across grades. Kolkata has the highest concentration of Grade C spaces, at 11%, indicating a need for asset upgrades and redevelopment in the region. One distinguishing factor for India's office market is its cost advantage. Average rents are expected to decline to USD0.96 per sq ft per month in 2025, reinforcing India's reputation for cost-efficiency on the global stage. This affordability, combined with a rising supply of Grade A space, has fueled the growth of GCCs and strengthened India's position in multinational real estate strategies. The report forecasts that India could add its next one billion sq ft of office stock between 2036 and 2041, depending on the pace of market expansion. Under a high-growth scenario of 12.7% CAGR, this milestone could be achieved by 2036, while a more conservative estimate of 10.9% CAGR would place the next threshold by 2041.

AI disruptions will be brief as reskilling drives new jobs: IT Min
New Delhi/ Bengaluru Disruptionsfrom Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be brief and new jobs will emerge, Karnataka's IT and Biotechnology Minister Priyank Kharge has said, highlighting the state's large-scale reskilling initiatives are underway to prepare talent for new-age technologies. In an interview with PTI, Kharge asserted that Karnataka retains a comfortable lead over others in technology, with strong data and performance vectors backing its position. The state encourages innovation and collaboration, ensuring 'that any entrepreneur or corporation who dreams of making it big globally, starts from Karnataka', he noted. On the issue of disruptions due to AI, the minister said, Nipuna Karnataka, the state's large-scale reskilling and upskilling initiative, aims at safeguarding and future-proofing its talent pool. 'While there might be certain job losses, new jobs will be that is why we need a massive reskilling and upskilling programme. So, there will be disruption, but the disruption will be for a brief while, until we are able to reskill and upskill people,' he said. Nipuna Karnataka is a Rs 300 crore reskilling initiative, industry-driven and industry-focused, with ambitious targets to train talent at scale, he added. In the coming financial year, the state government aims to skill individuals in key areas, like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital forensics, and other technologies, in line with the global tech demands. 'We intend to scale over 5,00,000 people in the coming financial year, in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital forensics, and anything that the industry might need. So, we are closely talking to them through our skill council for emerging technologies, taking their feedback, taking their curriculum, and seeing how we can ensure that we give the most affordable and most talented human resources for them. 'And this programme is just not catering to the local ecosystem, we are catering to the global ecosystem also,' Kharge noted. He said Karnataka retains its lead over others, and data ranging from IT exports to startups and GCCs play, underscores its competitive strengths. 'We are far ahead of the curve when it comes to our neighbours or neighbouring states. So, while we love competition, we are not afraid of it. It also helps us pull up our socks,' he said. As many as 20,000 startups are registered with the state government, he said, adding that of 110 unicorns, more than 45 are from Bengaluru. 'We contribute 21 per cent of the national bioeconomy, and 65 per cent of defence electronics manufacturing happens in Karnataka. And GCCs, we have close to over 800 GCCs and their units, totalling about 1,500,' Kharge said. The same trend is evident in office space demand, real estate leasing, and GCC momentum. 'Last year, we gobbled up close to around 47 per cent of the entire country's real estate for GCCs. This year, just in the last six months, 13.1 million square feet has been given only for GCCs. So, where is the competition? I don't see that,' Kharge said. The minister emphasised that the state's policies are backed by strong, actionable outcomes like the recent Quantum Roadmap. 'We are just not announcing mere policies for the sake of announcing them. So, when we keep the Karnataka quantum roadmap in front, people believe is because over the years, we have managed to build a strong foundation of skills. 'We have topped that with incubators, and we have topped up with centres of excellence across sectors. So, I run more than 25 centres of excellence from agritech to space tech. And through these, we are innovating and inventing. On top of that, we have put budgets. On top of that, we put policies,' Kharge said.
