Indian economy not dead but in ICU, says Abhishek

Kolkata: Wading into the "dead economy" debate, Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday said that the country's "economy wasn't dead but in the ICU" due to flawed policies in the last decade. Banerjee launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the US imposition of a 50% tariff on Indian goods reflected the Centre's failed foreign policy. Banerjee, while leaving for Delhi, told reporters, "Whose failure is this? Who brought (US President) Donald Trump here and campaigned for him in Gujarat just a month before Covid hit? Who went to Texas to campaign for him? BJP politicians held prayers for Donald Trump and his long life. The Prime Minister also campaigned for Trump in 2019 in Texas." "The govt that used to boast about its '56-inch chest' has been snubbed by China, the US, and many other countries. Let alone putting pressure on Pakistan, they did not even issue a statement condemning Pakistan's actions," said Banerjee, who is also a member of the parliamentary external affairs committee. I can say that the Indian economy is in the ICU. From bad, it has become worse in the last 10 years. Due to the 50% tariff, there will be substantial job losses. Exports will come down. This is all because of the Centre's poor foreign policy," he added. The Trinamool MP claimed that the Election Commission was acting "beyond its jurisdiction". "The EC's responsibility begins only when the Model Code of Conduct is in place. After that, it can take over the state's civil and criminal/police administrative machinery. But for the past 3-4 months, they have not allowed an elected govt to function. It has been done to give favours and advantages to BJP," he said. BJP workers attacked in Dinahata, pregnant woman among injured

Jalpaiguri: Several BJP workers, including a pregnant woman, were injured after their homes were attacked by a group of about 30 miscreants in Dinhata's Salmara area on Thursday morning. While BJP squarely blamed Trinamool for the attack, TMC said it was a fallout of the saffron party's internal rivalry. Police have started a probe. The miscreants, armed with lathis and bamboo sticks, attacked the houses of 'shakti pramukh' Jitendra Barman, Tarini Kanta Barman, Nazirhat-II GP member Juthika Barman and Mahila Morcha neta Malina Barman and vandalised them. The lady, eight months' pregnant, was rushed to Cooch Behar Medical College Hospital. Cooch Behar BJP president Avijit Barman claimed that the attack was carried out to avenge the complaint against 42 TMC supporters, including Udayan Guha. Trinamool rubbished the allegations. "We don't believe in violence. It was locals who attacked the BJP functionaries to protest the efforts to conduct SIR and impose NRC," said Dipak Bhattacharya, TMC's Dinhata-II president. BJP says TMC pushing state towards constitutional crisis

Kolkata: With CM Mamata Banerjee alleging that govt officers were being intimidated and none of them would be suspended, Bengal BJP said on Thursday Trinamool was pushing the state towards a constitutional crisis. Bengal BJP minder Amit Malviya posted on X: "Despite clear directives from Election Commission of India to register FIRs against EROs and AEROs for inserting fake voters, Bengal's CM refuses to comply… This is not just defiance, this is a constitutional crisis in the making." Bengal BJP netas also came down heavily after Congress lawmakers joined TMC MPs in a rally against attacks on Bengalis and the Bengali language. On Wednesday, Pradesh Congress had sent a letter to Haryana governor Asim Ghosh on this. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said TMC and Congress were trying to create a narrative in which they didn't believe themselves. "Congress does not have any right to talk about Bengal's culture or language. They threw Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose out of the party. Bengal was neglected for decades when Congress govt was at Centre. The same Congress has come to support Trinamool today," he said. State leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari said: "TMC is trying to confuse people by claiming attacks on the Bengali-speaking population. Refugees from Bangladesh were persecuted by Bengali-speaking people. Trinamool is trying to divide Hindu votes by creating a false narrative." Bhattacharya, meanwhile, sent a letter to Union home minister Amit Shah seeking central govt's intervention into attacks on BJP workers and netas. He alleged that the attack on Adhikari was not an isolated incident and that BJP workers were also targeted in Barasat. He sought a high-level probe by central agencies to find out the forces behind these attacks. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
