Guinea-Bissau President Ends Visit with Tree Planting
Embalo and his delegation arrived at the site around 10.10 am and were welcomed by Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
Upon arrival, Embalo planted the national tree of Malaysia, the Merbau, or scientifically known as Intsia palembanica, at Laman Perdana.
He then spent about 10 minutes on a buggy ride around the scenic and lush Perdana Botanical Garden and lake.
In her welcoming speech, Maimunah described Embalo's visit as a meaningful step forward in fostering solidarity between Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau.
'Your presence here, Your Excellency, in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur speaks volumes about the commitment of Guinea-Bissau to forging global partnerships grounded in mutual respect, sustainable development and shared progress. We are greatly encouraged by the transformative work taking place in your country,' she said.
Embalo arrived in Malaysia on Tuesday, marking the first-ever visit by a head of state from Guinea-Bissau.
Yesterday, he was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex in Putrajaya, followed by a meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to Wisma Putra, Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974.
Bilateral ties between the two countries remain cordial, underpinned by a shared commitment to cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral platforms, including the United Nations (UN), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau reached RM4.1 million, with Malaysia's exports to Guinea-Bissau valued at RM4.04 million and imports at RM0.06 million.

EVs to make up 20% of country's waste management fleet by 2027
PETALING JAYA: The Housing and Local Government Ministry is targeting electric vehicles (EVs) to make up 20% of solid waste management operations nationwide by 2027. Minister Nga Kor Ming said the move was part of the country's public cleansing reform agenda, which emphasises sustainability and greener urban development. 'In conjunction with Malaysia's chairmanship of Asean and the UN-Habitat Assembly, this initiative reflects Malaysia's commitment to leading the Sustainable Development Goals,' he said during his keynote address at the International Green Build Conference 2025 here on Tuesday (Aug 19). Nga said EV adoption in waste management would cut greenhouse gas emissions while lowering long-term operational costs. Potential EV uses include compactors, street sweepers and water sprayers. Nga added that the ministry is also aiming to build 18 waste-to-energy (WTE) plants by 2050. The Port Dickson plant has been operational since 2023, while the Sungai Udang facility in Melaka is expected to be completed in 2029. According to Nga, these plants could generate up to 600 megawatts of renewable energy (RE), enough to supply 500,000 households and support Malaysia's goal of reaching 70% RE capacity by 2050. Vietnam president hosts welcome ceremony for King and Queen of Bhutan
State President Luong Cuong and spouse greeting King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan and the Queen at the official welcome ceremony in Hanoi on Aug 19. — VNA/VNS HANOI: State President Luong Cuong and his spouse Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet hosted a red-carpet welcome ceremony in Hanoi on Tuesday for King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck of Bhutan, who are on a state visit to Vietnam from Aug 18 to 22. The ceremonial welcome included a military honour guard inspection, the playing of both countries' national anthems, and the presentation of flower bouquets by local children. Following the ceremony, President Luong Cuong and King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck held talks, discussing orientations for future cooperation. This is the first state visit to Vietnam by the King and Queen of Bhutan since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 2012, marking an important milestone in bilateral relations. It demonstrates the importance Bhutan attaches to the friendship and cooperation with Vietnam, as well as to the latter's role and stature in the region. The visit also exemplifies Vietnam's foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, and multilateralisation and diversification of external relations for peace, cooperation, and development. Both sides have enjoyed a strong friendship since the establishment of diplomatic ties. Viietnam has consistently valued its relations with Bhutan, regarding the latter as a pioneer in pursuing green growth and maintaining high 'happiness' indicators. Meanwhile, Bhutan considers Vietnam a priority partner for strengthening relations with and is keen to learn from Vietnam's development experience. High-ranking leaders from both countries have regularly exchanged congratulatory messages on important national anniversaries and maintain mutual visits at all levels. The countries' appointment of ambassadors shortly after establishing diplomatic ties gave strong momentum to bilateral cooperation. Tourism is seen as a highlight of bilateral relations, with an increasing number of Vietnamese travellers drawn to Bhutan, known for its pristine landscapes, Buddhist heritage, and Gross National Happiness, and Bhutanese visitors showing growing interest in Vietnam's people, heritage, and scenic attractions. While investment and trade cooperation remains modest, more and more Vietnamese businesses are coming to operate in Bhutan. Vietnam currently maintains one registered investment project in the field of interior design and construction in Bhutan. Both countries recognise significant untapped potential for enhanced cooperation in agriculture, tourism, culture, education, science and technology, digital transformation, and green development. Malaysia to use all international platforms to champion Palestinian rights, says Tok Mat
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will utilise every international platform available to ensure that the voices and rights of the Palestinian people continue to be heard on the global stage, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Foreign Minister said these platforms include the United Nations (UN), Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Asean, Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), G20 and BRICS. Mohamad said this effort was crucial in strengthening Palestine's struggle for independence and securing ongoing international recognition of its aspirations. 'Malaysia will continue to speak up, act and contribute within our capacity. We strongly condemn the Israeli Cabinet's recent decision to take full control of Gaza, which is a deliberate attempt at colonisation,' he told the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 19). The minister added that Malaysia had strongly denounced the Zionist regime's agenda of expanding illegal settlements under the 'Greater Israel' plan, including construction in the E1 area between Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adumim in the occupied Palestinian territories. 'These are unlawful acts that clearly violate international law and UN resolutions. They undermine Palestinian sovereignty and render the two-state solution impossible to achieve,' Mohamad said. He stressed that the atrocities committed amounted to crimes against humanity, breaching multiple international laws and the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. 'These acts include genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, destruction of public infrastructure, ethnic cleansing and forced displacement,' he said. Mohamad reiterated that Malaysia's support for Palestine was anchored on principles of justice, human rights and the right of Palestinians to self-determination, to return to their homeland and to establish a sovereign state based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital and for Palestine to be recognised as a full UN member. To date, more than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, including journalists, women, children, humanitarian workers and volunteers delivering aid, he said. Mohamad also highlighted Malaysia's close cooperation with countries such as Egypt and Jordan, as well as with international NGOs, through airdrop missions and an 'air bridge' to ensure that humanitarian aid reached those in need in Gaza despite numerous challenges.
