Children's character Zog is celebrated on Royal Mint 50p coins
The collectable coin marks 15 years since since Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's enthusiastic but accident-prone dragon first captured readers' hearts.
The design features Zog flying, complete with tiny wings and a determination to earn a golden star at Dragon School.
The 50p joins the Mint's childhood characters collection, which also includes The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child.

'As the dragon who tries his very best – despite his mishaps – Zog represents determination and perseverance, qualities we can all admire.
'This coin celebrates a character who has become a firm favourite in households across the UK and continues our tradition of honouring beloved children's literature on our nation's coinage.'
Zog author Ms Donaldson said: 'I'm delighted that Zog is being celebrated on a UK coin. When I wrote his story 15 years ago, I never imagined he would fly so far into people's imaginations. Seeing our determined dragon on a 50p piece would definitely earn him a golden star from Madam Dragon.'
Illustrator Mr Scheffler said: 'Drawing Zog with his big friendly face and clumsiness has always been such a joy. To see my illustrations transformed onto a coin is an incredible honour.'
Previous character coins from the Royal Mint also include the Snowman, Paddington Bear, and Wallace and Gromit.
The Zog 50p coin was created in partnership with Magic Light Pictures, the company behind the animated adaptation of the story. Its release on Thursday coincides with Zog Day 2025, celebrating the character's qualities.
The coin is available to buy from the Royal Mint's website in a range of precious metal finishes, with colour versions also available in Zog's orange hue. The range starts at £15 with colour version 50ps priced from £25.

Many of these activities are also brilliant for if the sun is shining or if the weather is a bit damp, meaning you can have fun this bank holiday, no matter what. Pick your favourite flowers at Forage Farm You can wander around over 4000 dazzling dahlias in 75 stunning varieties, alongside a range of annual flowers, and a fragrant sweet pea walkway at Forage Farm. Flower lovers can stroll, explore, and handpick their favourite blooms to take home while appreciating the beauty of their surroundings. A flower arch will frame the scene with extensive landscapes and plenty of unique photo opportunities to capture treasured memories. The flower field will be open from 10am to 5.30pm over the bank holiday at Forage Farm, Penllyn, just outside Cowbridge. 2. Wallace and Gromit trail in Bristol This summer holidays there is a fantastic Wallace and Gromit trail just less than hour from Cardiff and if you're a fan of the Aardman heroes, this one's for you. This year's trail will take place in Bristol - which takes between 30 mins to an hour on the train - and surrounding areas, featuring not only Wallace and Gromit but also Norbot and Feathers McGraw from the Vengeance Most Fowl film, which was released on Christmas Day 2024 and was a big hit with viewers. The trail runs until August 31 and you can download the map from here. 3. Pick sunflowers at Clearwell Farm If you're needing places to visit to get some fresh air and to keep the family entertained then just minutes away from Cardiff is the Clearwell Farm where you can explore a sunflower patch and maize maze as well as take part in other activities. Opening on Thursday, August 7, you will be able to explore the towering sunflower fields as well as try not to get lost within the 10-acre maize maze. Also at the farm there will be plenty of activities for children to enjoy including a Disney princess meet, greet, and singalong, circus skills workshop, and dinosaur day. Read more about it here. 4. Explore science at Techinquest Techniquest is a great day out (Image: Western Mail) The science and discovery centre, in Cardiff Bay, Techniquest has become a staple place to explore and learn when visiting Cardiff. There are always new events happening at the centre including exciting ones for the summer holidays this year. Exclusively for the summer from July 19 to August 31 you can visit the claystation workshops where you can make your very own Wallace and Gromit characters whilst enjoying the Wallace & Gromit Cracking Contraptions short films. Get sporty at Dyffryn Garden Games Not only is Dyffryn Gardens a stunning setting to spend your summer days, they also have plenty of activities for young ones to enjoy. The Edwardian botanical gardens have an arboretum, glasshouse and wild play area where the Dyffryn Garden Games will take place. There'll be several games and sports dotted around the gardens encouraging families to get outside and spend the sunny days together. Meet your heroes at Superhero bank holiday weekend at Fonmon Castle Running on Saturday, August 23, Sunday, August 24 and Monday, August 25 from 10am to 4pm is the superhero bank holiday weekend. Enjoy a fun-filled day where you can meet some of your favourite superheroes and catch the exciting Spiderman Show, performed three times daily. Your ticket includes access to: Jurassic Walks, Medieval Farm, Welsh Folklore Story Trail, Lost Victorian Garden, Woodland Walks, Adventure Play Areas, Castle and Grounds and free kids' stamp trail. There will also be face painting and archery/axe throwing available for an additional fee. Under threes go free, and well-behaved dogs on short leads are welcome. 7. Get historical with Cadw There are some brilliant bank holiday events happening across Cadw sites near Cardiff. From Saturday, August 23 to Monday, August 25 is the really wild bank holiday weekender at Castell Coch, where there will be nature-themed displays, charities, scavenger hunt and craft. From Saturday, August 23 to Monday, August 25 there is the Raglan Castle - a 42 minute drive from Cardiff - odyssey where you can explore the castle's rich history through live demonstrations, and immersive experiences perfect for curious minds. From Saturday, August 23 to Monday, August 25 there is the greatest knight at Tintern Abbey, a 51-minute drive from the capital. Living history, medieval re-enactment and music will transport the abbey back to its earliest days, to honour the life of Earl Marshal as the greatest knight returns. The splashpad opens from 10am daily. Pack a picnic and make the most of the rest of the park, including playgrounds suitable for various age groups. 9. Try out different cheeses at the Caerphilly Cheese Festival Caerphilly Cheese Festival will take place in Caerphilly town centre where there will be food, drink and craft stalls, a funfair, street entertainers, and lots on offer from town centre businesses. There will also be music, across three live music areas. The Caerphilly Cheese Festival is taking place on Saturday, August 30 and Sunday, August 31. 10. Cycle the barrage Starting this ride in Cardiff Bay allows you to visit not just one, but two parks, and take a break on the giant Roald Dahl Enormous Crocodile bench halfway through. If you bring along a picnic, you can pause to appreciate the view of boats entering the bay and observe the birds and wildlife passing by. Don't forget to pack your bucket and spade for a visit to Sandy Park, where young adventurers can enjoy the large wooden pirate ship. 11. Head to the urban beach in Newport Running until Saturday, August 31 is the urban beach in John Frost Square, in Newport. There is a beach area featuring giant deck chairs, peep-through board and sounds of the sea. It is free to enjoy. 12. Discover Bute Park Bute Park provides endless fun (Image: WalesOnline/Rob Browne) This green oasis in the heart of the city offers plenty for children. Bring along your football or rounders kit for a game, or follow the musical wooden percussion instrument trail in the area known as the old man's woods. Look out for the magnifying glass posts! Behind the Summerhouse Café, you'll find wooden animal sculptures and balance trails. Near the visitor centre, there's an accessible route and nature trail, suitable for kids aged four to eight. 13. Cycle the Taff trail and get a pie from Donald's Wales is home to many gorgeous cycling trails including the Taff trail in Cardiff. You can now cycle up the Taff trail and enjoy a delicious pie from the pop-up pie van Donald's in Radyr Cricket Club. Donald's will be at Radyr Cricket Club every weekend from 10am. 14. Take a dip at Lido Ponty With three pools; a main pool, an activity pool and a splash pool, all heated to 28 degrees, Lido Ponty offers fantastic swimming opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. Tickets are £3.50 (plus 25p booking charge) for adults and free (booking charge still applies) for those aged 16 and under. 15. Take on the trails in Newport There are two great free trails running in Newport. The giant chair trail will start on the riverfront and lead people into Friars Walk, while the monster trail, which will be linked to the Newport Now app, will give children the chance to collect monsters at venues across the city centre and then get a free story book from the Central Library when they have them all. Both trails are running until Wednesday, September 10. 16. Enjoy Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs You can hit the water at Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoir (Image: Welsh Water) The Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs have become a popular visitor attraction since its reopening in July 2023. A great place to visit during the summer as they have many water activities on offer including, cold water swimming, stand-up paddle boarding, canoeing and kayaking. There are also beautiful walking paths to keep you dry, a story trail and a popular café on site. 17. Heath Park Miniature railway Throughout the summer, miniature trains and trams are available for rides at Heath Park. The Heath Park Miniature Railways and Tramway are nestled in the picturesque Heath Park, close to the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) building. It's an excellent day out for the entire family as it caters to all age groups. There's no need to book in advance to visit the railway. It is £2.80 per person and under threes, go free. 18. Visit the family fun park in Cardiff Bay Entry is free to the fair in Cardiff Bay - though it's advisable to discuss spending limits beforehand - and it's a summer activity that appeals to children of all ages. There are plenty of rides suitable for school-aged children. 19. Catch some Pokemon at PokeCon On Monday, 25 August, between 11am and 5pm, the Red Dragon Centre will host a Pokemon pop-up brimming with merchandise, trading cards, and collectibles. It's an ideal event for fans, collectors, and trainers of all ages. 20. Watch a film at Cineworld and Vue The 10am weekend and school holiday Movies for Juniors showings are £3.99 per person at Cineworld. Michael Sheen on 'scary' lack of opportunity for Welsh kids The 56-year-old said it was crucial to move opportunities out of London Michael Sheen spoke about his early acting days at the Edinburgh TV Festival (Image: © 2025 PA Media, All Rights Reserved) Michael Sheen has spoken about the importance of having come from the same town as other notable Welsh actors as he expressed his concerns about the increasing difficulties faced by young people trying to break into acting. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, in a conversation with Jane Tranter, TV producer and CEO of Bad Wolf, he reflected on his own experiences attending youth theatre in Port Talbot. He explained that many of the opportunities he had as a youngster "have gone". Michael also noted how important it was to see people from where you're from on the biggest platforms, inspiring young people to follow suit, and the value of bringing more opportunities out of London. He said: "It is quite scary. I look back on my pathway of coming through, starting with a supportive family, coming from an area, you know it was old steel town and, sort of tough place to grow up in, not the sort of place you'd expect actors to come from but because we had Richard Burton that came from there and Anthony Hopkins .. "I again, one of the things I've realised as time has gone on is how important it is to see where you come from, represented on the world stage, and to know that it's possible. "I never questioned whether you could be successful as an actor, because Burton and Hopkins were and they came from this town." The final batch of Queen Elizabeth II £1 coins are entering circulation across the UK, the Royal Mint has announced. More than 23 million Queen coins are being released alongside 7.5 million new King Charles III £1 coins. The Royal Mint said the last of the Elizabeth II coins, dated 2022, are the rarest £1 coins in active circulation. The historic transition – with the dual release of almost 31 million coins – represents a significant moment for UK coinage, as the nation witnesses the changeover from Britain's longest-reigning monarch to her son and heir on the £1 denomination, the Royal Mint said. The Queen's £1 coins will be the final ones bearing Elizabeth II's portrait to enter circulation. Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, said: "This release represents a pivotal moment in British coinage history. Article continues below "As we release more of the King Charles III £1 coins into circulation alongside the final coins of Queen Elizabeth II, we're witnessing the physical representation of our monarchy's transition. "This dual release creates an exceptional opportunity for both seasoned numismatists and those new to coin collecting." The Royal Mint is encouraging the public to check its change over the coming weeks, as the new coins begin to appear in pockets and tills across the nation. Ms Morgan added: "Finding these new coins in your change could spark a rewarding hobby that connects you with the heritage, history and craftsmanship behind British currency." Since the introduction of the King's effigy on UK coinage in 2023, the 50p and £1 are the only denominations with Charles's portrait to have entered circulation so far. The King's £1 coins feature an intricate bee design on the reverse and are part of the Definitive collection, inspired by the flora and fauna of the British Isles. Article continues below Some 2.975 million £1s with the King's effigy were released in August last year. In total, there are around 24.7 billion coins in circulation across the UK, with the King's coins representing only around 0.004% of those, making his new coins highly desirable to collectors. All UK coins bearing the Queen's portrait will remain legal tender and in active circulation to allow a smooth transition and minimise the environmental impact and cost.
