Raising awareness on crop insurance among farmers is officials' duty, says DC Fouzia Taranum
Chairing a meeting of bank officials involved in crop loan disbursement at her office on Friday, Ms. Taranum stressed that educating farmers about the need for crop insurance is not just a recommendation but a responsibility for all banks that have issued agricultural loans.
'In Kalaburagi district, over three lakh farmers have received agricultural loans totalling ₹3,800 crore from various banks. Every one of these beneficiaries must be made aware of the benefits of crop insurance,' she said. 'The premium amount for crop insurance is minimal, but the protection it offers during unforeseen calamities is enormous. It is essential to convince all these farmers to enrol in the scheme by July 31 and achieve 100% coverage.'
She added that if officials and bankers fail to carry out the awareness drive and enrolment effectively, strict action would be initiated against them. 'Each bank and department must ensure that crop insurance details, particularly the major crops of the district, are disseminated at the taluk and gram panchayat levels, while other crop details should be shared at the hobli level,' she said.
For the 2025-26 Kharif season, IFFCO-Tokio General Insurance Company Ltd. has been appointed as the implementing insurance agency for the Kalaburagi district under the PMFBY.

Ms. Taranum also instructed the Agriculture Department to make full use of media channels to create mass awareness about crop insurance and ensure that farmers understand its benefits and procedures.

15,000 farmers in Cuttack stare at crop loss without insurance as portal fails to list new revenue villages
CUTTACK: Even though the last date to register for crop insurance under PM Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) is scheduled to end on Thursday, farmers of newly-formed revenue villages in Cuttack district have not been able to get their names registered, thanks to the alleged apathy of the revenue officials in uploading the names of the said villages on the portal. Last year too, farmers of these villages had faced the same issue. 'Two years have passed but the revenue officials have not yet uploaded names of the gram panchayats and revenue villages on the portal. With the last date for crop insurance registration being July 31 (Thursday), we have been running from pillar to post to sort the issue but to no avail,' said farmers of Patasura village in Katikata GP under Nischintakoili block. They alleged that they had earlier taken the matter to the additional district magistrate (ADM-Revenue) Dibyalochan Mohanta but the latter said the tehsildars concerned had already been asked to sort the problem by contacting the National Informatics Centre (NIC). 'We also apprised the Nischintakoili tehsildar Damayanti Sahoo of our plight but she has only been giving false assurances of solving it. We undertook kharif cultivation by incurring huge expenditure. If in any case, our crops get damaged due to natural calamities, who will be held responsible?' they questioned. Farmers alleged that though their villages had been accorded revenue village status over three years back, they are yet to avail new record of rights (RoR) as a result of which they are facing many problems. This is not an isolated case of Patasura village alone. If sources are to be believed, a minimum of 15,000 farmers across 20 villages under 15 tehsils are yet to get their names registered. Efforts to elicit response from ADM Mohanta and Nischintakoili tehsildar Damayanti Sahoo proved futile.

Cooperative major Iffco appoints KJ Patel as new MD, replaces Awasthi
Cooperative major Iffco has appointed K J Patel as its new Managing Director (MD) with former chief U S Awasthi's term ending on Thursday. Iffco Chairman Dileep Sanghani announced Patel as the new MD, the cooperative said in a statement. Patel, who was Director-Technical at Iffco, holds a mechanical engineering degree from Saurashtra University and has a rich experience of more than 32 years in the maintenance of Nitrogenous & Phosphatic fertiliser plants. He was heading the Iffco Paradeep Plant, the biggest complex fertiliser plant in India. "Patel brings deep industry knowledge and, proven strategic thinking approach that aligns with the goals of Iffco," Sanghani said. Further, he said the board is confident that Patel will steer Iffco into a new era of innovation and value creation. Sanghani also thanked the outgoing MD US Awasthi for his invaluable contribution and dedication to Iffco as well as farmers across the country. Iffco posted a 16 per cent increase in net profit to Rs 2,823 crore and a 4.5 per cent growth in turnover to Rs 41,244 crore during the last fiscal on higher sales of conventional soil nutrients as well as nano liquid urea and nano liquid DAP. It had clocked a net profit of Rs 2,443 crore and turnover of Rs 39,474 crore in the 2023-24 fiscal.
