Victims then received calls from fake airport officials demanding money to release the parcels. The scammers often used UK-based phone numbers to appear legitimate. Another method involved contacting people on social media, claiming they won a lottery and needed to pay a fee to claim the prize. These tactics convinced many victims to transfer money, believing they were dealing with genuine individuals and organisations based abroad.
The accused were identified as Shedrack Onainor (29), Vikas (25), Shahid Raza (45), Shahrukh Khan (23), Rakesh (22), and Sunday John (40). They were arrested from multiple places in the city. Raza was nabbed from West Delhi, and based on his information, a raid was conducted in South Delhi's Khanpur, from where Onainor, a Nigerian national, was nabbed. Based on his information, other accused individuals, including John, another Nigerian national, were apprehended.
Raza is the father-in-law of Shahrukh.
Onainor arrived in India on a medical visa in 2013, which expired in 2018. He stayed illegally and, with Nigerian associates, scammed Indian citizens through fake lotteries, gifts, and parcels. He collected money via Indian accomplices Raza and Khan, who also provided bank accounts for fraudulent transactions.
"Raza, uneducated and previously employed in Saudi Arabia, joined the racket around 7–8 years ago for a 15% commission.

With his son-in-law Shahrukh, he collected ATM cards and withdrew cash for Nigerian handlers. Khan joined 6–7 years ago. He used UPI IDs to transfer defrauded funds," Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Vikram Singh said.
Vikas opened multiple bank accounts using a fake address in Delhi and handed over ATM cards and SIMs to Rakesh, who then forwarded them to Raza and Khan. Vikas received 3% of each transaction.
Vikas's brother Rakesh helped manipulate Aadhaar details to open accounts, receiving a 2% commission.
John arrived on a business visa in 2023, which expired in 2024. He illegally remained in India, collecting defrauded funds across Delhi/NCR and splitting them with Nigerian co-conspirators.
"Onainor, along with associates, led the fraud by luring victims online. Once victims transferred funds, Shedrack coordinated with Indian handlers for the collection and distribution of cash. Rakesh and his brother Vikas opened 18–20 fake bank accounts in Vikas's name. They altered Aadhaar addresses to Delhi, obtained SIMs, and used forged documents. An associate helped update Aadhaar without verification," police said.

Chhangur Baba, accused of running religious conversion racket, money laundering, send to five-day ED custody
Chhangur Baba alias Jalaluddin was remanded to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody on Monday by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Lucknow. The court was hearing a case related to a money laundering investigation against Chhangur and his associates linked to an alleged illegal conversion racket in Uttar Pradesh, officials said. According to a PTI report, Chhangur Baba alias Jalaluddin alias Karimulla Shah has been in jail in the predicate offence case being investigated by the Uttar Pradesh Police's Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS). The ED had applied to the court for his custody following which it was allowed a five-day remand of the accused till August 1, the officials said. He will be questioned in jail and his statement will be recorded under the PMLA, they added. Earlier this month, the federal agency had conducted searches at Chhangur's native place in Balrampur district and two locations in Mumbai. The ED had said that the accused had received funds worth ₹ 60 crore in 22 bank accounts, including 'large amounts' from abroad. The money-laundering case against Chhangur Baba stems from the ATS FIR filed at a police station in Lucknow's Gomti Nagar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021. Chhangur Baba, his son Mehboob and alleged associates Naveen Rohra alias Jamaluddin and Neetu Rohra alias Nasreen were arrested by the ATS. They are currently lodged in a jail. Chhangur Baba has been accused of being involved in a 'large-scale' conspiracy which includes religious conversions, utilisation of foreign funds, and activities posing a potential threat to national security, as reported by PTI. The ED said, 'Chhangur Baba and his associates are alleged to have established an extensive network operating from the premises of the Chand Auliya Dargah in Balrampur, where he regularly organised large gatherings attended by both Indian and foreign nationals.' 'He is accused of systematically inducing, coercing, and manipulating indiduals of other faiths, particularly Scheduled Castes, and economically disadvantaged persons belonging to Hindu religion, into religous conversion,' the probe agency added. The ED searches also led to the seizure of a number of documents that show that the 'proceeds of crime' (illicit funds) were majorly transferred to different people for purchasing a number of immovable properties worth crores of rupees and carrying out construction in these properties. All the immovable assets acquired by Chhangur Baba are in the names of Naveen Rohra and Neetu Rohra to conceal his actual involvement in money laundering, the ED has said.

Meerut: Dreaded gangster, Dabloo Yadav, 45, wanted in nearly 24 criminal cases in Bihar and UP -- including the murder of a social worker, a court witness and contract killings -- was shot dead in a joint encounter with a team of UP Special Task Force's (STF) Noida unit and Bihar Police in Hapur on Sunday night, police said. In 2017, Yadav along with his aides had killed another person, Mahendra Yadav, for testifying against him in court. At UP STF headquarters in Lucknow, additional DG (law and order) Amitabh Yash on Monday said that the encounter took place around 11:55 pm on Sunday near the Badda Canal bridge in Simbhaoli, Hapur. The Bihar-based gangster -- with a bounty of Rs 50,000 -- was shot in the chest during crossfire while his accomplice managed to flee. The ADG (LO) added: "When the suspects were signalled to stop, they opened fire at the police team and tried to escape.
