Located in Ethiopia, it is being backed by both the country's flag carrier Ethiopian Airlines and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
It will be built in Bishoftu, which is around 28 miles from the capital Addis Ababa.
Plans were first announced for the airport back in 2018.
However, the design contract has now been awarded to Sidara, a Dubai-based engineering firm.
The mega airport will have four runways, with space for up to 270 aircraft.
While yet to be confirmed, it is likely to have more long-haul flights, with current routes to Ethiopia operating from London Heathrow.
Flights currently take just under eight hours, and are around £600 return.
The airport is expected to cost £4.5billion and open by 2029.
Initially capacity will be 17million, although this will jump to 60million by 2040.
It will replace the current Addis Ababa Bole International Airport which has a maximum capacity of 25million.
Not only that but it will take on some of the world's biggest airports such as Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson and Beijing's Daxing.
Mesfin Tasew, Chief Executive of Ethiopian Airlines Group. said: "It is a five-year project [that] will be finalised in 2029.
"It will be the biggest in Africa. Phase one alone will cost at least $6 billion."
It will also boost the capacity of Ethiopian Airlines, who hopes to fly 20million passengers in the next year.
It also isn't the only huge airport hoping to break records that is set to open.
The h uge new Warsaw Solidarity Airport in Poland is set to open by 2032 with enough passengers to 'take on Heathrow and Dubai' as airport hubs.
Set to cost £25billion, as many as 65million will be welcomed by 2060.
Here are a few other mega airports hoping to open across Europe.

Lion Hotel in Builth Wells applies for new licence

A grand Powys hotel that was finally sold earlier this year after being shut for half a decade, has applied for a new alcohol licence – prompting anticipation that it may be fully re-open before long. Builth Wells' Lion Hotel sits in a prominent location at the bottom of the town's High Street and is the first thing many people see when entering Builth. It is arguably the town's most eye-catching building, but has become an eyesore over the last five years, after shutting in 2020 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. After several false dawns, including failing to sell when being put on the market, it was finally bought in April, although information on what the new owner's plans for the hotel have remained a mystery. It did re-open fleetingly during Royal Welsh Show week in July, with several locals invited to a soft opening, but now it appears on the cusp of fully flinging the doors back open, after applying for a new premises licence with Powys County Council (PCC). The application states that a licence is being sought by Lions Retreat Limited. The application, to apply from Monday to Sunday, includes the sale of alcohol between 9am and 2am; regulated entertainment from 9am and 1am; and late night refreshments between 11pm and 2am. The application, posted on the local authority's website, said the closing date for representations was August 6. A PCC spokesperson said: 'The closing date for representations has now closed. The application will be considered by the council in due course.' Estate agents Sidney Phillips, who had been marketing the property on behalf of London-based Hilco Global Real Estate Advisory, said in April: 'The Lion Hotel has now been sold.' Builders' vans were soon seen parked in the hotel's private car park, with workers confirming they had been contracted to repair water damage inside the property. Scaffolding was later erected and painters have since been seen working on the outside of the hotel. The 18-bedroom Grade II-listed building was put back on the market in 2024, with a guide price of £350,000. The centuries-old hotel was last sold to an Oxfordshire-based property firm in March 2019, on behalf of a private individual and off a guide price of £475,000. The final sale price was, however, undisclosed. The Lion closed its doors in March 2020 following the shutdown of the hospitality sector and public life in general when the pandemic hit. It has not re-opened until now.

Tredegar Vehicle Dealer Transfers Majority Ownership to Employees

David Spear Commercials, one of the UK's leading independent commercial vehicle dealers, has announced that 60% of the business has been transferred into an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) giving its employees a majority stake in the future of the company. Founded by David Spear in 1987, the Tredegar-based business has grown into a respected national leader in the commercial vehicle sector, supplying a wide range of vehicles to businesses across the UK. 'This company has been my life's work, built with the support of my wife Sarah, our children, and now with our son Elliot actively involved in the business,' said David Spear, founder. 'We've created something very special over the years, and I wanted to secure its future in the right way by placing it in the hands of the people who have helped make it what it is today. This move to employee ownership protects our independence, preserves our culture, and creates long-term opportunities for our team.' The new structure ensures that the business remains locally rooted, people-led and independent while opening fresh avenues for employee engagement, financial participation, and leadership development. David Spear Commercials will continue to operate with the same team and, it said, the same high standards and the same commitment to serving businesses across the UK. 'We want to say a heartfelt thank you to all of our customers — past and present,' added David. 'Your continued trust and loyalty have played a huge part in our journey, and we're excited to move forward with you by our side, now with a team that's more invested than ever.'

Trespass to design 2026 Commonwealth Games uniforms again

The company has been appointed by Glasgow 2026 as its official uniform partner and will be responsible for supplying the uniform that will be worn by thousands next summer. It comes after the Glasgow-based company designed the red, white and grey uniform worn by the workforce and volunteers at the Commonwealth Games in the city in 2014. The 2026 Commonwealth Games is expected to feature around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories who will compete across 10 sports and six Para sports at four venues. The Trespass brand, which has 299 stores around the world, was established in 1984 in Glasgow by Afzal and Akmal Khushi. They said: 'It's great to be back. When we designed the uniform in 2014, we thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. So, getting the chance to be part of the Games again, in our home city, and design a second uniform is truly special. 'We know how important the uniform is for uniting the Games workforce and we're now working hard to create a design that's the perfect fit for Glasgow 2026.' Glasgow was last year announced as the host of the 2026 Games after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out due to rising costs. Jade Gallagher, chief operating officer of Glasgow 2026, said: 'It's great to welcome back Trespass to the Games as a returning sponsor for 2026. 'The Games uniform means so much to our volunteers and is the first thing athletes and spectators will see as they approach our iconic venues. 'It is important that we have the best team producing it and we're confident that with Trespass as our partner we will deliver a sustainable and iconic uniform design that will make Scotland and Glasgow proud. 'The people of Glasgow are truly at the heart of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, so it feels fitting that Trespass, a homegrown brand with over 40 years of experience in activewear and a sponsor of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, is returning to design another uniform that will celebrate the city's vibrant culture and unique heritage.' Sarah Quinn, a Glasgow 2014 volunteer, said she is looking forward to seeing the new design. She said: 'Receiving my uniform at the 2014 Commonwealth Games was the moment everything became real. 'Wearing it gave me a sense of belonging to such a unique and exciting experience. 'I can't wait to see the 2026 design.'
