India, Namibia discuss further strengthening defence engagement
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): Commander of the Namibian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Teofilus Shaende, on Monday met with Vice Chief of Air Staff Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani here to discuss further strengthening bilateral defence engagement, with a focus on enhanced training cooperation, capability development, and strategic partnership between the two nations.
In a post on X, Additional Directorate General of Public Information wrote, 'Air Vice Marshal Teofilus Shaende, Air Force Commander of the Namibian Air Force, called on Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani, #VCOAS and held discussions on further strengthening bilateral defence engagement, with a focus on enhanced training cooperation, capability development and strategic partnership between the two nations.'

Earlier in the day, Air Vice Marshal Teofilus Shaende paid tribute to India's bravehearts at the National War Memorial in Delhi.

India and Namibia enjoy warm and cordial relations. The Namibian people and leadership view India as a dependable and trusted friend. Indian support during their liberation struggle is warmly recalled by Namibian leaders, according to the Indian High Commission in Namibia statement. India was among the first nations to raise the question of Namibian independence in the UN.
After Namibian independence, the Indian Observer Mission was upgraded to a full-fledged High Commission on 21 March 1990. Namibia opened a full-fledged resident Mission in New Delhi in March 1994, according to the statement.
The 4th round of India-Namibia Foreign Office Consultations took place in Windhoek in 2022. During the meeting, the two nations conducted a comprehensive review of the existing bilateral relations. (ANI)

"We Felt The Land Shake, We Are Scared": Indian Students In Iran Seek Evacuation
Indian students in Iran have urged the government for evacuation in the backdrop of Israeli strikes that targeted nuclear and military sites in Tehran and other areas near the capital of the country. "Right now the situation is calm and we are safe, but we are feeling scared. The attack started at around 3:30 am and we felt the land shake. It was a concerning experience," Tabiya Zahra, a second-year MBBS student from Kashmir at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), told PTI. Zahra said the university officials visited them and advised them to remain calm. However, they had been given no information regarding areas that might be safer. She raised issues about the uncertain security situation and limited communication because of internet disruptions. Another student, Alisha Rizvi from Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh, said "the embassy asked us to email our local addresses and contact details for emergency purposes". "They are trying to collect data in case evacuation is needed," she added. Both the students are in their second year of a 5.5 year MBBS program, and had gone to Tehran in 2023. They also confirmed that the airspace over Tehran had been closed and flights from Imam Khomeini International Airport had been suspended after the strikes. On Friday, Israel attacked multiple Iranian nuclear and military sites. The Israeli leaders said that the attack was necessary as there was an imminent threat of Iran building a nuclear weapon. Iran and the US were already having discussions related to a nuclear deal that could have resulted in the US lifting some of its crushing economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for Tehran drastically limiting or ending its enrichment of uranium. In response to Israel's offensive, Iran launched a retaliatory attack sending a swarm of drones toward Israel. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association had written to External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, requesting for assistance. Jammu and Kashmir Students Association national convenor Nasir Khuehami said that students have reported hearing air raid sirens and feeling tremors. "We are receiving calls from the students and their families, requesting assistance. We urge the government to stay prepared and take necessary steps if evacuation becomes unavoidable," he said.

Supriya Sule's ‘big alarm' after Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad
After the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule on Friday raised serious concerns over India's transport safety, calling civil aviation a big alarm and a "red flag for a long time." Speaking to ANI, Sule said, "Civil aviation is a big alarm. It's been a red flag for a long time. I request the Government of India to come out with a white paper." "The entire transport, be it roads, airways or civil aviation, there are a lot of concerns about safety." She added, "I thank Nitin Gadkari because he has been openly asking MPs to focus on safety. Road safety has been his priority. All of us have tried our best to work with him to make sure infrastructure and safety improve," she told ANI. Sule noted that despite efforts in road safety, the government had struggled to maintain safety in railways and civil aviation. "Unfortunately, our experience in railways and civil aviation has been challenging. The accidents are very alarming. I am going to discuss it in the Parliament. I'm going to meet Ashwini Vaishnaw," Sule said. She highlighted the massive number of commuters in Mumbai alone, saying, "The number of people using railways in Mumbai is huge. The government of India needs to put in a lot of effort and improve safety in the railways pan-India." While expressing her grief over the crash and its national impact, she said, "It's very painful. I appreciate that yesterday Amit Shah and today the Prime Minister went. The whole country, and the world, has reached out. It's been a very difficult 24 hours for India. We are all deeply pained." She also warmly remembered BJP leader and former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, saying, "Vijay Rupaniji had been a most wonderful colleague to all of us." On Thursday, the Al-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aeroplane bound for London's Gatwick had crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport. The airlines said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash. There were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national on board the crashed plane, airline authorities said.
