Dalit woman's complaint: Peroorkada ASI suspended

The Hindu21-05-2025

The State Police suspended another officer attached to the Peroorkada police station in connection with the illegal detention of Nedumangad native Bindu R., a Dalit woman and domestic worker, on a trumped-up charge of stealing a gold necklace from her employer's house.
District Police Chief (Thiruvananthapuram City) Thomson Jose issued orders suspending grade assistant sub-inspector Prasannakumar for mistreating the woman at the police station.
An inquiry conducted by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Cantonment, found Prasannakumar guilty of dereliction of duty while being in charge of the General Diary entry on the particular day (April 23).
The complainant had also accused him of harassing her and hurling abuses. She also alleged that the officer had asked her to drink water from the washroom when she asked for water.
The disciplinary action comes two days after Peroorkada sub-inspector Prasad S.G. had been suspended, pending inquiry, in connection with the incident. Official sources indicated that the ongoing inquiry will continue, with possible action being adopted against more officials who were present at the station when the incident had occurred.

Dalit Man Murdered Over Ration Dispute In Madhya Pradesh, His Brother Injured

Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. A 19-year-old Dalit youth, Pankaj Prajapati, was shot during a dispute at a ration shop in Madhya Pradesh, leading to his death. Rahul Gandhi condemned the incident as part of ongoing discrimination against Dalits under the Modi government, demanding justice. Chhatarpur: A 19-year-old Dalit youth died after he was allegedly shot during an altercation at a ration shop in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, while his brother received pellet injuries, police said on Monday. Condemning the incident, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi alleged that 19-year-old Pankaj Prajapati was shot dead in broad daylight only because he is a Dalit who demanded his share of rights. Taking to X, he alleged that 11 years of the Modi government have been full of humiliation, violence and discrimination against Dalits, tribals, backward classes, and minorities. The incident occurred on Sunday in Bilhari village under the Naugaon police station area, about 25 km from the Chhatarpur district headquarters, police said. According to police, a dispute broke out between Pankaj Prajapati and three others while buying goods from the fair price shop, during which one of them fired a gun. "Pankaj Prajapati died on the way to Gwalior," said Naugaon Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Amit Meshram. He said a case has been registered against Praveen alias Kattu Pateria, Naveen Pateria, and salesman Ramsevak Arjaria under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the Arms Act. Police raided the houses of the accused persons, however, they managed to flee. A police team has been formed to trace them. Gandhi, meanwhile, alleged that no FIR was registered and postmortem was postponed because "the guilty leader is sitting in the lap of power and the power belongs to the Manuwadi and anti-Bahujan BJP". "The 11 years of the Modi government have been full of humiliation, violence and discrimination against Dalits, tribals, backward and minorities. The conspiracy to institutionally make them second-class citizens and keep them away from the mainstream is continuing," he said. Gandhi demanded that culprits be arrested immediately and given the harshest punishment. "I stand with the Prajapati family and every Bahujan in the country. This is a fight for respect, justice and equality, and we will win this fight at all costs," he added.

Peace meeting held in Mandya village after temple entry dispute escalates

Mandya: A peace meeting was convened on Monday at Elechakanahalli village in Mandya taluk following communal tensions stemming from the alleged denial of entry to Dalits at the local Maramma Temple. Deputy commissioner Kumara and superintendent of police Mallikarjuna Baladandi presided over the meeting, attended by leaders and residents from both Dalit and upper-caste communities. The issue surfaced when upper-caste villagers reportedly prevented Dalits from entering the temple, leading to clashes between the two groups. In response, taluk officials temporarily shut the temple for both communities and imposed heightened security to prevent further unrest. Both groups subsequently placed separate locks on the temple doors, symbolising the deepening divide. Despite initial attempts at reconciliation, efforts to broker peace proved unsuccessful. Tensions escalated further on June 3 when a car belonging to a Dalit resident was allegedly vandalised by members of the upper-caste community. A formal complaint was later filed against six individuals in connection with the incident. During Monday's peace meeting, community leaders—including several women—requested 15 days to find an amicable solution to the conflict. In the meantime, police have intensified security measures in the village and around the temple to maintain order. Authorities remain hopeful that the village elders and community representatives will use this period to arrive at a peaceful resolution and restore harmony.

Mevani attacks BJP over atrocities on Dalits, weaker sections in Gujarat

Congress's Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani on Saturday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah's silence on alleged incidents of atrocities against Dalits, adivasis and other weaker sections in Gujarat, and announced that the party will hit the streets to raise the issue. Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters in the Capital, Mevani accused the PM, the Home Minister and the RSS of 'putting the values of Manusmriti above the Constitution'. Citing the low conviction rate in cases of atrocities on Dalits, Mevani said at the national level, this figure is 30-35%, but in Gujarat it is only 3-5%, which means 95% of the culprits in the state go scot-free. The Congress leader told reporters that several incidents of Dalit atrocities have been reported from Gujarat such as the murder of a 19-year-old Dalit youth in Amreli, the alleged setting ablaze of a Dalit senior citizen in Patan and the alleged gangrape of a Dalit girl in which BJP members are alleged to have been involved. 'The Congress is preparing to launch a massive demonstration in August-September against atrocities being afflicted on Dalits, adivasis and those from the weakened sections in Gujarat,' he announced.
