Fresh protest against Gaza war erupts in Greece over arrival of Israeli cruise ship
There have been several protests at various Greek ports in recent weeks against the Crown Iris cruise ship, which is operated by Israeli shipping giant Mano Maritime and is currently touring around Greece.
Local communities unfurled huge Palestinian flags and chanted pro-Palestine slogans as Israeli tourists disembarked from the cruise ship.
In the coastal city of Volos, located some 330 kilometres north of Athens, demonstrators protesting the arrival of the Crown Iris were dispersed by riot police using stun grenades.
The Israeli tourists were still able to disembark the ship and board buses for tours of nearby Mount Pilio and the Meteora monastery complex in Thessaly, local media reported. Meanwhile, the protesters left the port and continued their pro-Palestine march through the main streets of the city.
Last month, the Crown Iris left the Greek island of Syros early without its passengers disembarking after more than 150 protesters demonstrated at the island's port."It is unacceptable that tourists from Israel continue to be welcomed here while the Palestinians are suffering in the [Gaza] Strip," the protesters said on social media.However, some Greeks have denounced the protests, including the country's Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis."We owe an apology to these friends of Greece who chose to spend their holidays here and were forcibly denied it by some," he wrote on X last month following the incident in Syros. "Our country remains hospitable to all and antisemitism has no place here!"Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar contacted his Greek counterpart, George Gerapetritis, over the Syros incident. Israel has reportedly stressed to Greece that the protests against the Crown Iris could end up harming Israeli tourism in the country.Greece is a popular tourist destination for Israelis on package tours and travelling independently, particularly in the summer months, and there are several flights per day between Tel Aviv and Athens, as well as from Israeli airports directly to Greek islands. — Euronews

Foreign NGOs say new Israeli rules keep them from delivering Gaza aid
JERUSALEM: New Israeli legislation regulating foreign aid groups has been increasingly used to deny their requests to bring supplies into Gaza, according to a joint letter signed by more than 100 groups published Thursday. Ties between foreign-backed aid groups and the Israeli government have long been beset by tensions, with officials often complaining the organizations are biased. The rocky relations have only gotten more strained in the wake of Hamas's unprecedented attack on Israel in October 2023. 'Israeli authorities have rejected requests from dozens of NGOs to bring in lifesaving goods, citing that these organizations are 'not authorized to deliver aid',' the joint statement reads. According to the letter, whose signatories include Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders (MSF), at least 60 requests to bring aid into Gaza were rejected in July alone. In March, Israel's government approved a new set of rules for foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working with Palestinians. The law updates the framework for how aid groups must register to maintain their status within Israel, along with provisions that outline how their applications can be denied or registration revoked. Registration can be rejected if Israeli authorities deem that a group denies the democratic character of Israel or 'promotes delegitimization campaigns' against the country. 'Unfortunately, many aid organizations serve as a cover for hostile and sometimes violent activity,' Israel's Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli told AFP. 'Organizations that have no connection to hostile or violent activity and no ties to the boycott movement will be granted permission to operate,' added Chikli, whose ministry directed an effort to produce the new guideline. Aid groups say, however, that the new rules are leaving Gazans without help. 'Our mandate is to save lives, but due to the registration restrictions civilians are being left without the food, medicine and protection they urgently need,' said Jolien Veldwijk, director of the charity CARE in the Palestinian territories. Veldwijk said that CARE has not been able to deliver any aid to Gaza since Israel imposed a full blockade on the Palestinian territory in March, despite partially easing it in May. Israel has long accused Hamas of stealing aid entering the Strip, and since May, the government has relied on the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation to manage food distribution centers. According to Gaza's civil defense agency, its operations have been frequently marred by chaos as thousands of Gazans have scrambled each day to approach its hubs, where some have been shot, including by Israeli soldiers.

Saudi Arabia roundly rejects Israeli expansionist plans

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed Saudi Arabia's outright rejection of the settlement and expansionist plans adopted by the Israeli occupation authorities. The Kingdom reaffirmed the historical and legal right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent and sovereign state on their own land, in accordance with the relevant international laws. Saudi Arabia also warned the international community against the Israeli occupation's continued flagrant violations, which undermine the foundations of international legitimacy, blatantly infringe on the sovereignty of states, and threaten regional and international peace and security.

Syria, Turkey Sign Defense Cooperation Deal after Ankara Talks
The Syrian Defense Minister signed a memorandum of understanding with his Turkish Counterpart on military training and consultancy after talks in Ankara on Wednesday, according to Reuters. Over the last few months, both countries had been negotiating a comprehensive military cooperation agreement to help rebuild the Syria after the fall of Al-Assad's regime in December. During the talks, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan accused Israel and the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) of obstructing the new government's efforts to rebuild Syria after over a decade of civil war. He said Israel had 'fueled certain difficulties' in Syria and cautioned that Israeli security 'cannot be achieved by undermining the security of neighboring countries.' Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his Syrian Counterpart Asaad Al-Shibani 'To the contrary, you should make sure your neighboring countries are prosperous and secure. If you try to destabilize these countries, if you take steps to that end, this could trigger other crises in the region,' Fidan added. Condemning SDF's Failure to Comply with the Deal Earlier this month, a Turkish Defense Ministry source stated that Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have failed to comply with a deal signed with the new government earlier this year to integrate into Syria's state institutions. The source also warned that the recent clashes between the Kurdish parties and government forces threaten the country's unity, according to Reuters. 'It has not escaped our attention that the SDF terrorist organization's voice has become louder, empowered by the clashes in Syria's south,' the source told reporters at a briefing in Ankara. Turkey considers the US-backed SDF a terrorist organization and has repeatedly noted that it expects the group to abide by the deal to disarm and integrate into Syria's state institutions. 'The SDF terrorist organization's attacks in the outskirts of Manbij and Aleppo against the Syrian government in recent days damage Syria's political unity and territorial integrity,' the source added. In March, Syria's President Ahmad Al-Sharaa and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Chief Mazloum Abdi signed an agreement to integrate the civil and military institutions of Kurds into the Syrian government. However, the implementation of this deal was held up by differences between both parties.
