Prestige TV is dead, long live Maniac TV
It's common knowledge now that in the age of streaming, TV has become a staid medium: genteel, polite, predictably fine. Everything's slick and proficiently produced, every network and streamer sets their base sights on 'prestige', which means everything's objectively good and nothing particularly stands out.
The New York Times famously labelled this as 'Mid TV'. What we need now is the antithesis of Mid TV. We need Maniac TV.
What is Maniac TV? It is TV at the edge of decency, possibly even competency, oftentimes legality. It is messy and overstuffed. It's the sort of TV that should probably get shut down, its creator blacklisted and pointed towards a mental institution. It is TV made by lunatics with a singular vision and a death drive. It is TV like Nathan Fielder's The Rehearsal and Everybody's Live with John Mulaney.
Both shows, which end their seasons this week – The Rehearsal aired its finale on Monday, and Everybody's Live airs its on Thursday – have spent the past few months casually taking TV to places it's rarely been, didn't even know it wanted to go.
For Fielder, that includes a demented commitment to a bit. The finale of The Rehearsal found the comedian – who has spent all season weirdly agitating for aviation safety – casually revealing he'd spent the past two years (since The Rehearsal 's previous season) secretly training as a pilot.
Revisiting a through-line that's been in his comedy since Nathan For You – that making reality TV can let you get away with anything, and that people will do anything in the presence of a camera crew, even override their natural instincts for self-preservation – he even got 150 naive actors to agree to take a flight on a Boeing-737 captained by himself, a comedian with barely 200-hours of flight experience. Seeing Fielder behind the controls of a commercial jumbo jet at 25,000 feet is surely the most ridiculous TV moment of the year.
Mulaney's Everybody's Live might function at the opposite end of ambition, but its results are no less extreme. On its finale this week – upping a mid-season stunt, so brilliant in its nonsensical absurdity, in which he lined up 24 men at each inch on the height chart between 5-feet and 7-feet as part of a campaign he christened 'Know Your H' (ie: Know Your Height) – he's organised to fist-fight three teenage boys.
And that's just the big closing number, the culmination of a live show that spends over half its time juggling viewer phone calls that meander awkwardly, go nowhere, are regularly unintelligible, while actual guests like David Letterman and Sigourney Weaver sit couchside barely utilised. A couple of weeks ago, Mulaney hosted an entire episode blindfolded. It went about as uncomfortably as you'd imagine, with writer Jeremy Levick (himself a maniac, as part of a viral comedy duo with Rajat Suresh) having to stand beside him the whole show lest Mulaney fall off the stage or deliver over half his monologue to the back wall (which he did).

'Out of touch': Nicole Kidman slammed after recommending $680 massage treatments when visiting Sydney
Nicole Kidman has revealed her top five places to visit when she's back in Sydney, including a jaw-dropping massage at a luxurious day spa. The Sydney-native, 57, recently chatted to The New York Times to reveal the places she finds 'comfort and ease' when she returns to the harbour city. Kidman's picks range from free spots like the Royal Botanical Garden to an ultra-exclusive day spa. 'Every time I return to Sydney, there's a feeling of comfort and ease,' she told the newspaper. 'This city is where I grew up, where my sister and her family live, where my children love to spend their holidays.' Her favourite places to visit include the Royal Botanic Garden, The Art Gallery of NSW, day spa Venustus and the Harbour pools. Iconic pie shop Harry's Café de Wheels in Woolloomooloo also made Kidman's hit list. While four of the five are accessible to any visitor or resident, the Six Hand Body Massage at luxurious day spa Venustus starts from a whopping $1059. 'They just know how to take care of people, and their treatments are amazing, especially after a long flight,' the movie star said. 'A massage at Venustus will have you ready to go to take on the city.' 'Thanks Nicole for recommending a spa where, for a mere (starting at) $687 (AUD) I can get a massage,' one person said. 'Why the high end spa? It's incongruous with the others that are all free or very low cost,' another fan pointed out. 'Seems like hidden advertising or something and detracts from the whole article.' Despite primarily residing in the United States since 1989, Kidman and her husband Keith Urban have maintained strong links to their homeland. In Sydney, the couple own six combined apartments overlooking Sydney Harbour in Milson's Point. The Kidman-Urban clan also own a breathtaking 45-acre rural property called Bunya Hill in the Southern Highlands, complete with cattle and alpacas. The family typically spend the Christmas holidays in Australia and host a private New Year's Eve party at their sprawling Sydney apartment.

Olivia Munn feels as if she has reached ‘the other side' in life after health fight
Olivia Munn has reached 'the other side' in her life after a series of health traumas. The 'Your Friends and Neighbours' actress, 44, endured a string of brutal surgeries after a cancer diagnosis upended her life, and she has now spoken about how she feels as if she has been given a second chance at enjoying motherhood and her career. She told People: 'I'm so grateful to be on the other side. Everything feels easy in a way. 'I feel so at peace. If I can stay happy and healthy, then I just want to sail into the rest of my life.' The actress has three-year-old son Malcolm with comedian and actor John Mulaney, 42, and says handling him puts her into 'survival' mode at times when he unleashes tantrums. Olivia was diagnosed in April 2023 with luminal B breast cancer – a fast-growing, hormone-driven form of the disease – just months after recovering from postpartum anxiety following Malcolm's birth. She said about the experience: 'It was a whole other perspective, because I had been struggling with life in postpartum, and now I was so desperate to stay alive. 'From the moment I received my diagnosis, it just became a march forward.' She underwent a series of major medical interventions, including a double mastectomy, hysterectomy and ovary removal – and began IVF treatment on a specialised protocol for cancer patients. She and John were able to retrieve and fertilise seven eggs. Olivia added: 'I said, 'I really don't think I'll be okay unless we get two girl embryos. I know this puts me at risk, but I just need you to support me'. 'He said, 'Whatever you need'.' That same day, they learned they had two healthy female embryos. In September 2024, the couple had their daughter Méi via surrogate. Olivia said: 'We were so lucky to find someone so kind who we bonded with so much.' She and John couple married in July that year and said she felt as if she recently needed to get back to acting to 'energise' herself. Olivia is now filming season two of 'Your Friends and Neighbours' in New York, commuting regularly back to California, where John is raising the children and taping his Netflix variety show 'Everybody's Live'. She added: 'It's a dance right now with our schedules. 'We make it work simply because we have the mindset that it's a blessing.'

Miley Cyrus breaks silence on Billy Ray Cyrus' romance with actress Liz Hurley, ‘I'm being an adult about it'
Miley Cyrus has finally broken her silence on her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus' shock new relationship with actress Elizabeth Hurley. In a new interview with The New York Times , the Grammy winner spoke candidly about her turbulent relationship with her dad, as well as her mum Tish Cyrus' new marriage to actor Dominic Purcell. 'Now that my mum is so in love with my stepdad, who I completely adore, and now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too — I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing,' the former Disney star said. Cyrus' rift with the Achy Breaky Heart singer deepened after the end of his 28-year marriage to her mum Tish in 2023. Now, she says that she is handling his flourishing romance with Hurley like an 'adult'. 'At first it's hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, 'Yes, that's your dad, but that's just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy.' My child self has caught up,' she said. 'I'm being an adult about it.' Cyrus confirmed she has fully reconciled with her dad, but admitted her closeness with her mum played a major role in their falling out. 'My mum really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard,' she told the outlet. 'I think I took on some of my mum's hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain 'There's been enough bridges now of time to get us all reconnected. I think timing is everything.' Cyrus, 62, and Hurley, 59 recently sparked marriage rumours after looking very smitten in a series of photos shared on social media. The pair's relationship surprised fans, coming just months after Cyrus' highly publicised and controversial split from singer Firerose. According to reports, it was during that difficult time that the country singer reconnected with Hurley, ultimately laying the foundation for their romance.
