World Cup exit after Real Madrid defeat

Good performance despite lack of clinical edge
Our very special journey is over. After beating Pachuca and drawing against Al-Hilal, a 0-3 defeat to a phenomenal Real Madrid side sees us finish our group in third.

Our boys can still be delighted though with how they represented Salzburg and Austria on the international stage - and can journey home with four World Cup points proudly in tow.
Match summary
Xabi Alonso's side made the early running as they zipped the ball around under the summer rain in Philadelphia. Just as they had done against Al-Hilal, our defence saw out a period of opposing dominance determinedly while keeping any big danger away from Christian Zawieschitzky.
It wasn't until the 20th minute when our young goalkeeper was tested for the first time - by pulling off a save worthy of a World Cup stage. Vinicius Junior was suddenly alone in front of the 18-year-old, but our young keeper stood tall and made a super stop with his feet.

We gained increasing attacking courage shortly before the 30-minute mark. First Nene went close (27') before Edmund Baidoo (28') saw the ball run away from him in a good position. We had grown right into the encounter with Los Blancos now having to drop deep to contain our pressure - with only the final pass and finish lacking. The Spanish giants then pounced on the break as Vinicius Junior was supplied again - and he slammed the ball into the bottom left (40').
We did not allow our heads to drop for long with Petar Ratkov having a chance for a quick equaliser (44'), only for Vinicius Junior to tee up Valverde to make it 2-0 just before the break (45+3').
Substitute Adam Daghim had two dangerous efforts early in the second period, and our Red Bulls continually threatened Thibaut Courtois without being able to get the ball into the net. We had chances but simply missed too many to trouble a side of the class of Real Madrid.
We certainly put in a good account of ourselves in so many ways in a packed and noisy Lincoln Financial Field, with just a little lacking in terms of efficiency in front of goal. We went really close when Bellingham cleared a big chance from Edmund Baidoo away from the line (67'), and we went within inches of a goal from a 73rd-minute corner.

The final scoreline might not have suggested it, but a result was on against Real Madrid tonight. We threw everyone forward in the final stages in search of two goals to send us through, and Gonzalo Garcia scored a third on the break (84'). Our unforgettable adventure at the FIFA Club World Cup has therefore come to an end.

Leinster 'can never be too strong'

Irish Rugby's performance director David Humphreys says the union must make three of their four provincial sides "more competitive" to remain in the upper echelons of the sport. Ireland are currently ranked third in the world and have won the Six Nations Triple Crown in three of the past four seasons. Advertisement United Rugby Championship (URC) winners Leinster, however, consistently provide the bulk of Andy Farrell's national side with Ulster in particular struggling for Test representation in recent seasons. "When I first came in, there was a lot of talk around Leinster [being] too strong. In a high-performance system, a team can never be too strong," said Humphreys, who has been in position since June last year. "Ultimately, the goal is to be the very, very best. They are very close to being in that position. "But the challenge that I believe we in the IRFU [Irish Rugby Football Union] have, and in my role, is to make the other three more competitive." Advertisement There are currently 12 Leinster players in Farrell's British and Irish Lions squad touring Australia while another, Munster's Tadhg Beirne, came through the Leinster school system. It is at such an underage level where Humphreys believes the IRFU must start their attempts to redress the imbalance. While the likes of Jamison Gibson-Park and James Lowe are examples of clever recruitment under World Rugby's previous three-year residency rule, Dublin schools have provided the most reliable production line of talent for Leinster and subsequently Ireland. Humphreys, capped 72 times by Ireland, is keen to mirror that standard in Ulster, Munster and Connacht schools. Advertisement "The challenge becomes how we close that gap in the provinces? We can do it a little bit by recruitment, by being a little bit more flexible in terms of who they can recruit and when they can recruit, but that's a short-term solution," he said. "I fundamentally believe, based on my experience, what we've seen working through the Irish system is that if we can support players below what is traditionally considered the pathway, going into the schools and putting directors of rugby in there or supporting schools in a way they feel is necessary to improve their rugby programme, we can get a longer-term fix which will ultimately improve the provinces and ultimately support Ireland." The union's decision to axe their men's sevens programme was made last month with Humphreys saying the financial savings will be invested into provincial "pathways" and the women's game. "That was part of the decision to finish the men's sevens programme. It wasn't simply a financial decision, it was a performance decision based on [being] able to reallocate the resources in our system," he added. Advertisement "The budgets are not being cut. We've made a performance decision based on the financial reality of the world that rugby is in, not just the IRFU but the wider world, and to say we're going to take a longer-term solution which is [that] the money we're going to save from finishing the men's sevens programme is going entirely into investing in the three provincial pathways and the women's game." 'We all recognise that Ulster are in a rebuilding phase' The struggles outside of Leinster have been most pronounced at Ulster, who have not won any silverware since Humphreys was part of their Celtic League title in 2006. The 53-year-old was also captain when his native province beat Colomiers to be crowned champions of Europe in 1999. Next season, however, they will not play in the top tier competition for the first time since it was introduced in 1995. Advertisement Australian international Angus Bell and Northampton back row Juarno Augustus have been recruited to strengthen a side that finished 14th in the URC last season, while Humphreys said head coach Richie Murphy has the "pedigree" to turn things around. "If you look at their age profile, they're very young and there are lots of very good players there, the key is how quickly can we get them to the point that they are competitive again," he said. "You've seen a couple of signings come in that will definitely strengthen them, but again it's more about making sure that the decisions we make now around the coaching [and] recruitment have a short-term impact to address the issues that you have, but we're also making decisions that make sure that in five years' time, 10 years' time, those provinces are all competing at the level we want. "The expectation in Ireland now is that we have four provinces that are competitive, and an Irish team is on top of the world."

Paul Pogba set for Monaco medical ahead of Ligue 1 move

Paul Pogba is set to undergo a medical at Monaco on Friday ahead of a proposed move to the Ligue 1 club. The Athletic reported on June 13 that Monaco were interested in move for Pogba. The 32-year-old is a free agent having left Juventus by mutual consent in November 2024. Pogba had not played for the Italian side since the previous September, after he failed an anti-doping test. He was initially given a four-year ban that was reduced to 18 months on appeal, which meant he was eligible to return to training in January and to playing in March. Advertisement Pogba had been linked with a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) after he was pictured at several matches during his ban. The Athletic reported in April that D.C. United owned the Frenchman's discovery rights. Monaco's move for Pogba comes with the club also expected to sign Ansu Fati on loan from Barcelona. The 22-year-old is set to undergo a medical on Friday. Monaco finished third in Ligue 1 last term, four points behind second-placed Marseille and 23 behind winners Paris Saint-Germain. Though a 91-time France international, Pogba has not played senior football in his homeland, having moved to Manchester United's academy from Le Havre as a youth. Pogba made his professional debut for United in October 2011, playing only seven times before leaving at the end of that season and joining Juventus. There, he established himself as one of the world's best midfielders, winning four consecutive Serie A titles, two Coppas Italia and finishing runner-up in the Champions League in 2014-15. Pogba moved back to United for €110million (£93.2m) in the summer of 2016 but struggled with injuries towards the end of his contract and returned to Juventus on a free transfer six years later. He made only 10 appearances in 2022-23, and featured twice before his ban the following campaign.

Southampton's Onuachu to join Trabzonspor

Paul Onuachu scored four goals in 40 appearances for Southampton [Getty Images] Southampton have agreed terms for the transfer of Paul Onuachu to Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor. The 31-year-old Nigerian international made 40 appearances in two-and-a-half years at St Mary's. Advertisement All four of Onuachu's goals for the club came last season when Saints finished bottom of the Premier League with 12 points and were relegated to the Championship. "We thank Paul for his efforts during his time as a Saints player and wish him well," the club said in a statement on their website. He spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Trabzonspor, scoring 15 times in 21 matches. Onuachu made his international debut for Nigeria in 2019 and has 24 caps and three goals for the Super Eagles. He was part of the squad who finished as runners up in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
