Mushroom killer's house restrained after guilty verdict

The property at the centre of a deadly mushroom lunch has been restrained by the court after Erin Patterson was found guilty of triple murder. Victorian Supreme Court Justice Michelle Quigley granted the confiscation application over Patterson's Leongatha property on July 23 following a closed court hearing. A suppression over the restraining order was lifted at 5pm on Wednesday. Patterson was on July 7 found guilty of murdering her former in-laws Don and Gail Patterson, 70, and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson, 66. She was also found guilty of the attempted murder of Heather's husband Ian Wilkinson. The jury found she deliberately served the four people beef Wellingtons laced with death cap mushrooms at her Leongatha home on July 29, 2023. Patterson, 50, pleaded not guilty, claiming during her 11-week trial in Morwell that she did not intentionally poison her lunch guests. But 12 jurors returned the four guilty verdicts on July 7 after seven days of deliberations. On July 16, the Victorian Director of Public Prosecutions made an application in the Supreme Court for the Leongatha property to be restrained under the confiscation act. The order was granted following a closed court hearing before Justice Quigley on July 23. A spokeswoman from the Office of Public Prosecutions confirmed the confiscation application was to prevent the property being sold or otherwise dealt with. "This is to ensure that if any family members of Ms Patterson's victims apply for compensation or restitution, the property is available to satisfy any orders that are made by the court," the OPP statement said. Patterson's lawyers have been approached for comment, while her ex-husband Simon declined a request. Patterson, who is facing the possibility of life behind bars, will return to court for a pre-sentence hearing later in 2025. After her sentence is handed down, she will have 28 days to file an appeal.

17-year-old boy charged with killing nurse while riding an e-bike, as father claims he has no control over him

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with manslaughter after allegedly killing a 59-year-old nurse from Perth while riding an unregistered electric motorbike. Police allege the teenager was riding recklessly through the northern suburbs before the fatal collision. The boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, is accused of hitting the nurse while riding an e-bike recklessly. Officers had reportedly attempted to stop the teen just five minutes before the fatal crash. The court heard one of the rider's tyres was damaged from travelling at high speed, causing him to lose control multiple times - but he still refused to stop. The prosecutor said the teen's dangerous behaviour began after he stopped taking prescribed medication, choosing instead to self-medicate with cannabis - which police later found in his bag. It was also revealed the boy has ADHD and autism and is currently on an NDIS plan. The court was told his parents are separated, he no longer attends school, and that his father had 'absolutely no control over his behaviour.' The teen is reportedly displaying obsessive compulsive behaviour in custody, frequently cleaning and mopping floors at the detention centre. Detective Sergeant Ollie Edwards said: 'We have seen various instances of e-rideables or electric motorcycles or similar involved in fatal crashes in Perth recently.' Police confirmed others were present in the park at the time and are appealing for anyone who saw the crash or has footage of the bike to come forward. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Overseas criminal suspects in synagogue firebombing

Police are examining exiled tobacco kingpin Kazem 'Kaz' Hamad as part of its investigations into whether offshore criminals worked with Victorian associates to carry out the firebombing of the Adass Israel Synagogue. The overseas investigations were confirmed after Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) on Wednesday arrested a Werribee man, 21, as part of an ongoing investigation into the firebombing in Ripponlea on December 6, 2024. Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Krissy Barrett said investigators were working with Australia's Five Eyes security partners to ensure 'our collective powers and capabilities are drawn upon', but would not answer questions about which countries they believed the attack's masterminds were based in. 'Our investigation is not limited to Australia. It involves exploring criminals offshore, and we suspect these criminals worked with criminal associates in Victoria to carry out the arson attack,' Barrett said. Five Eyes is a multinational intelligence sharing network which includes Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand. The AFP deputy also said authorities were investigating links to exiled tobacco kingpin Kazem 'Kaz' Hamad. 'That is a name that has come up in our investigation, and that remains one of our ongoing lines of inquiry,' Barrett said. Victoria Police allege the 21-year-old Werribee man was one of three individuals who broke into the Ripponlea synagogue and set the fire, but would not divulge if they believed he was involved in orchestrating the attack, or if he was a low-level criminal hired to carry it out.
