MIRI (June 12): A 29-year-old man was fined RM1,500 in default one month in prison after he pleaded guilty in the Magistrates' Court here today to abusing illicit drugs in 2019.
Dexter Timban Suning from Kampung Tunku Abdul Rahman, Lambir entered the plea after the charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act, was read to him.
The Section provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or up to two years' imprisonment upon conviction.
Magistrate Ashok Linggam also ordered the accused to undergo two years of supervision by the authorities.
According to the case facts, Dexter was tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine at the Miri Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division office at around 7.30pm on Aug 1, 2019.
Prosecuting was Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman, while the accused did not have legal representation.

JOHOR BARU: A lorry driver was fined RM6,000 by the Magistrate's Court after pleading guilty to reckless driving that resulted in significant damage to public infrastructure. Chew Ah Sing, 69, was charged with driving negligently along KM30.7 of Jalan Johor Baru-Gelang Patah-Pendas at about 3.20pm on June 10. According to the charge sheet, he drove the lorry without lowering the raised tipper bucket, causing it to strike overhead electrical cables and damage three electric poles, a traffic light pole, a CCTV and a bus stand. The offence was framed under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which is punishable with a jail term not exceeding 12 months and a fine of RM5,000 to RM10,000, upon conviction. Chew pleaded guilty after the charge was read to him in Mandarin. He was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Sharmaine Fairuz Mohd Zulkifli, who asked the court for a lower fine. 'He is supporting his wife and a child who is still studying,' she said, adding that it was also his first offence. Magistrate Nur Fatin Mohamad Farid imposed the fine in default of four months' jail and ordered that his driving licence be suspended.

Man charged with sexual assault of daughter
KUALA LUMPUR: A despatch rider pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here to sexually assaulting his six-year-old daughter. The 37-year-old father of two is accused of committing the offence at a house in Kampung Datuk Keramat here between June 28 and July 10 last year. The charge is framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, read together with Section 16(1) of the same law. If convicted, Section 14(a) provides for a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and whipping, while Section 16(1) carries a jail term of up to five years and a maximum of two strokes of the cane. According to a Bernama report yesterday, deputy public prosecutor M. Saravanan requested bail be set at RM20,000 in one surety, along with an additional condition that the accused must report to the nearest police station once a month. 'In addition, the accused must surrender his passport to the court and is prohibited from contacting or disturbing the victim, as he is the child's biological father and has visitation rights,' said DPP Saravanan. Meanwhile, the accused, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lower bail on grounds that he only earns RM2,000 a month and his daughter is currently living with his ex-wife who has since remarried. Judge Azrul Darus set July 16 for mention and granted the accused bail of RM5,000 in one surety, along with the condition that he must report to the nearest police station once a month until the disposal of the case.

'WHAT could a royal family member be possibly doing in a nightclub'? 'Or is this a typo when it should be a high school literature club. 🙏🏻' Such are the questions playing in the mind of netizens after Malaysiakini reported that the police are investigating a member of the Pahang royal family who allegedly stabbed a man in a Kuantan nightclub last month. Kuantan district police chief Wan Zahari Wan Busu who confirmed receiving a report on the May 8 incident further told the news portal that an arrest has been made to facilitate investigation into the case. However, he declined to confirm whether the royalty mentioned in the report was the individual arrested or whether he was the same individual who was implicated last year in an attack against road construction worker Alias Awang who was allegedly stabbed and shot at. Wan Zahari added that investigations are being conducted under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means. The investigation paper on the case will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor once the probes are completed 'in the near future'. Going by the Malaysiakini report, digital creator JalalMisai (@jllmisai) expressed amazement at the stabbing incident which is said to have stemmed from the 30-year-old victim 'having bumped into the royalty figure twice previously (at a separate entertainment establishment)'.
