Astros turn to Hunter Brown in series finale vs. Red Sox
Astros manager Joe Espada was non-committal when asked who would replace Hader at the back end of the bullpen. Right-hander Bryan Abreu seems the logical choice given his role setting up Hader, but Espada remains open to utilizing multiple options.
It's uncertain how that may shake out on Wednesday when the Astros host the Boston Red Sox in the rubber match of their three-game series.
"For me, and I was talking to the relievers about this, for Josh Hader to be how successful he's been, he needs guys to give him the ball with the lead," Espada said. "All these guys have set him up to be the closer that he is. Not to take anything away from Josh. Josh is probably the best. But you need guys to help him get to that point, and these guys are capable of doing that. What you guys saw (Monday) with us piecing it together, we're going to have to do more of that.
"I told them to be ready to go, and they've been ready to go the whole entire season. We have the weapons to do it."
Right-hander Hunter Brown (9-5, 2.51 ERA) is scheduled to start the series finale for the Astros, one day after the team dropped a 14-1 decision.
Brown did not factor into the decision of a 5-3 road victory over the New York Yankees on Friday after allowing two runs on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. He remained winless over his last six starts and is 0-2 with a 4.73 ERA during that stretch.
Among American League pitchers, Brown ranks first in hits per nine innings (6.21), second in opponent OPS (.571), and third in ERA and strikeouts (160).
Brown is 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA in two career starts against the Red Sox. He did not factor into the decision of a 2-1 road loss on Aug. 1 after surrendering one run on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts over seven innings.
Right-hander Walker Buehler (7-6, 5.40) has the starting assignment for Boston on Wednesday.
Buehler twirled six shutout innings in a 10-2 road win over the San Diego Padres on Friday, allowing four hits and two walks while recording four strikeouts.
He is 2-0 with a 3.27 ERA over his last six starts. Before that stretch. Buehler had dropped five of six decisions while recording a 9.29 ERA.
Buehler is 1-1 with a 3.72 ERA over four career starts against Houston. He did not factor into the decision of a 7-3 win over the Astros on Aug. 2 after allowing three runs on nine hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora started Abraham Toro at first base for the second time in the series on Tuesday, but is likely to start Romy Gonzalez at first in the series finale. Cora cited the balance the switch-hitting Toro and right-handed Gonzalez can offer his offensive attack.
"We're going to mix and match," Cora said. "Romy will probably play first (Wednesday). Try to keep the balance of the lineup. When teams have three lefties in the bullpen, it's smart to keep Ref (Rob Refsnyder) and Romy on the bench if we're going to be aggressive pinch-hitting. Having Abe swing the bat well is going to help us."

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre holds three-shot lead at BMW Championship
Robert MacIntyre carded a brilliant 62 to hold a three-shot lead after day one of the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club. The Scot was among the later starters that got to take advantage of softer conditions after a two-hour rain delay, with darkness preventing Bud Cauley from completing his opening round. MacIntyre, who is on the verge of joining Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose in qualifying for Europe's Ryder Cup team, finished with six successive birdies and carded 10 in total against two bogeys. The highlight of the left-hander's day came when he holed a 66-foot effort for birdie at the 13th to spark his spectacular finish. 'The last six holes is probably as good as I've ever putted in a stretch of holes – just so consistent,' said MacIntyre. 'When you get the eye on, it's free flowing, and it's nice. 'I feel like the way I play golf is better suited for the tougher tests, where you're rewarded for hitting a fairway, you're rewarded for hitting a green, and then take your chances with the putter. Just happy with today's work.' MacIntyre leads by three from England's Fleetwood, whose wait for a first PGA Tour title goes on after he was pipped by Rose at the St Jude Classic last week. Scottie Scheffler's hot streak continued as he fired an opening 66 to lie third. The world number one finished with three birdies in the final four holes to top the early leaderboard at the second FedEx Cup event. Scheffler, who has registered 12 successive top-eight finishes in a scintillating year, said on Sky Sports: 'It changed pretty significantly, a lot softer. The fairways were a little bit harder to hit this morning. 'They're still pretty wide, but they were still with the firmness, challenging to hit. And then with the softness coming in with the rain, the golf course got significantly easier.' Scheffler was playing with Masters champion Rory McIlroy, who carded a level-par 70. The Northern Irishman, who skipped last week's FedEx Cup event knowing he is guaranteed to be in next week's Tour Championship, had a slow start, with three bogeys in the opening six holes, but battled back.

Angels look to continue 2025 dominance of Athletics in road series
August 15 - The Los Angeles Angels are brimming with confidence as they prepare for Friday's opener of a three-game set against the Athletics in West Sacramento, Calif. The bravado isn't solely limited to smacking 13 homers while being 7-0 against the A's this season. The Angels are coming off a three-game sweep of the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers in the Freeway Series to finish off a clean 6-0 sweep of the season series. Suddenly, the Angels are just three games below .500 and are creeping into the American League wild-card race. They stood five games behind the New York Yankees for the third and final wild card entering Thursday's play. "I hope this is a good wake-up call for all of us that whatever we do, however we prepare and get ready to play a world champ like that and we swept them, that's the same mentality, the same energy, same motivation we've got to have the rest of the way," Angels closer Kenley Jansen said. "It's great to sweep them, but I want to get to the postseason." Logan O'Hoppe delivered the decisive two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Angels a 6-5 victory over the Dodgers on Wednesday night. It was a feel-good moment for the catcher, who had 14 homers at the conclusion of May and just four since. "It's one I've wanted for a while," O'Hoppe said of the winning hit. "Obviously, the past couple months haven't felt right. ... I got a pitch to hit and I'm happy I got it." O'Hoppe was one of the Angels who terrorized the A's in a four-game sweep in West Sacramento in May. He was 8-for-18 with four homers and six RBIs. Taylor Ward was 9-of-18 with two homers and nine RBIs in that series. He homered in each of the final two games against the Dodgers and has team-leading marks of 29 homers and 90 RBIs. The Athletics have won 12 of their past 19 games, but lost two of three to the visiting Tampa Bay Rays this week. Slugger Nick Kurtz was held out Wednesday before the off-day to give him two complete days of rest. Kurtz is homerless in 15 games since his epic four-homer game against the Houston Astros on July 25. All-Star shortstop Jacob Wilson (broken left forearm) remains out of the lineup but has begun light hitting and the club hopes he'll return near the end of the month. According to he's set to begin a rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Las Vegas. Darell Hernaiz is filling in and went 0-for-11 over the last four games. He is batting .217 in 46 at-bats. Still, Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Hernaiz is an improved player over the guy who batted .192 in 120 at-bats in 2024. "Defensively, it's night and day different," Kotsay told reporters. "From the offensive side, the power is showing up. He battles with the two strikes. He's changed that approach a little bit, which I love. This is a great opportunity for Darell. He's leaving a great impression." The A's will send rookie right-hander Jack Perkins (1-2, 4.08 ERA) to the mound against Los Angeles left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (6-7, 3.37) in the opening game. Perkins, 25, earned his first big league victory with six strong innings against the Baltimore Orioles last Saturday. He gave up three runs and three hits. Kikuchi, 34, has won two straight starts. He beat the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, allowing four runs and eight hits over five innings. He excelled against the Athletics on June 9 when he allowed one hit over 7 1/3 shutout innings. The Angels eventually won 7-4. Kikuchi is 3-3 with a 3.06 ERA in 64 2/3 innings over 12 career starts against the A's. --Field Level Media

Dodgers-Angels game descends into violent brawl as fan is knocked out cold before being kicked in the head
Two people have reportedly been arrested after a Los Angeles Dodgers fan was kicked in the head and knocked out cold in a sickening incident. Disturbing video footage shows the fan being beaten in an altercation in the stands of Angel Stadium during Wednesday night's game between the Los Angeles rivals. The victim was sucker-punched and then, after he fell back in his seat, a second man kicked him in the head. Despite being slumped over - apparently unconscious, with a woman attempting to protect him - the man is punched in the head once more. A spokesperson for the Anaheim Police Department told TMZ that the fight 'appears to have started over the stealing of a hat.' But many details - including about those involved - remain unclear. According to TMZ, two individuals in their mid-20s were arrested over the incident. One is facing a felony assault charge while the other was booked for misdemeanor assault. Oh my goodness they killed my boy here @Angels — Borgen (@Actually_Borgen) August 14, 2025 A man was kicked in the head and knocked out cold during an Dodgers-Angels game this week It's claimed that, at the time, the victim turned down the chance to go to the hospital. It was not the only time that tempers flared during the recent Freeway Series. Another social media clip showed two women arguing in the stands. On the field, the Angels made franchise history against the Dodgers. On Wednesday night, the Angels completed their first-ever six-game Freeway Series sweep of their Southern California rivals. Logan O'Hoppe hit a go-ahead two-run single with two outs in the eighth inning, rallying the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-5 victory. The Angels' only other season sweep vs. the Dodgers came when they went 4-0 in 2019. The Dodgers, who took their fourth straight loss, fell one game behind the San Diego Padres in the National League West. Los Angeles hadn't trailed in the division since April 27.
