To defend our democracy, PM must disavow and abandon Segal report
'In many parts of the world this is in danger of becoming a self-fulfilling assertion: Israel's reckless behaviour and insistent identification of all criticism with antisemitism is now the leading source of anti-Jewish sentiment in Western Europe and much of Asia.'
Anyone repeating Judt's words would risk no longer being able to speak in mainstream Australia because they would have been branded as antisemitic. Similarly, a university or writers' festival or public broadcaster could lose its funding for hosting Ehud Olmert, Israel's former prime minister, who last week compared plans for a 'humanitarian city' to be built in Rafah to 'a concentration camp', making him yet another antisemite according to the Segal report. Pointedly, Olmert said, 'Attitudes inside Israel might start to shift only when Israelis started to feel the burden of international pressure.' In other words, leading Israelis are saying criticism of Israel can be helpful, rather than antisemitic.
Yet, even by me doing no more than quoting word-for-word arguments made by globally distinguished Jews, could it be that I meet the Segal report's criteria for antisemitism? Would I be blacklisted for repeating what can be said in Israel about Israel but cannot be said in Australia?
At the same time, in an Australia where protest is being increasingly criminalised, the Segal report creates an attractive template that could be broadened to silence dissenting voices that question the state's policies on other matters such as immigration, climate and environment.

That the ABC and SBS could be censored on the basis of 'monitoring' by Jillian Segal, a power she recommends she be given as the Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism, raises the unedifying vision of our public broadcasters being policed from the Segal family lounge room.
No matter how much Segal seeks to now distance herself from her husband's political choices, that his family trust is a leading donor to Advance – a far-right lobby group which advocates anti-Palestinian, anti-immigrant positions, publishes racist cartoons and promotes the lie that climate change is a hoax – doesn't help engender in the Australian public a sense of political innocence about her report.
It is hard to see how this helps a Jewish community that feels threatened, attacked and misunderstood. Could it be that the Segal report's only contribution to the necessary battle against antisemitism will be to fuel the growth of the antisemitism it is meant to combat?
If the ironies are endless, the dangers are profound.

It is not simply that these things are absurd, it is that they are a threat to us as a democratic people. That the prime minister has unwisely put himself in a position where he now must disavow something he previously seemed to support is unfortunate. But disavow and abandon it he must.
Antisemitism is real and, as is all racism, despicable. The federal government is right to do all it can within existing laws to act against the perpetrators of recent antisemitic outrages. Earlier this month, the Federal Court found Wissam Haddad guilty of breaching the Racial Discrimination Act with online posts that were ' fundamentally racist and antisemitic ' but ruled that criticism of Israel, Zionism and the Israel Defence Forces was not antisemitic. It is wrong to go beyond our laws in new ways that would damage Australian democracy and seem to only serve the interests of another nation that finds its actions the subject of global opprobrium.
The example of the USA shows where forgetting what is at stake leads. Just because the most powerful in our country have endorsed this report does not mean we should agree with it. Just because it stifles criticism of another country does not make Australia better nor Jews safer. Nor, if we follow the logic of Ehud Olmert, does it even help Israel.
As the Auschwitz survivor Primo Levi wrote, 'we too are so dazzled by power and prestige as to forget our own essential fragility. Willingly or not we come to terms with power, forgetting that we are all in the ghetto, that the ghetto is walled in, that outside the ghetto reign the lords of death and that close by the train is waiting.'
The lessons of the ghetto are not the exclusive property of Israel but of all humanity. In every human heart as well as the lover and the liberator, there exists the oppressor and the murderer. And no nation-state, no matter the history of its people, has the right to mass murder and then expect of other peoples that they not speak of it. If we agree to that, if we forget our own essential fragility, we become complicit in the crime and the same evil raining down on the corpse-ridden sands of Gaza begins to poison us as well.

Greens candidate Hannah Thomas has revealed new details about the moment she was seriously injured while being arrested during an anti-Israel protest. Ms Thomas said she didn't know how much vision – if any – she'd be able to recover after the incident left her with a serious injury to her eye. She had been was protesting outside SEC Plating in Belmore, Sydney on Friday June 27 when she was involved in an altercation with NSW Police. 'It all happened very fast,' Ms Thomas told 10 News+ on Tuesday. 'I remember feeling that impact to my head and just thinking, 'oh my God, what was that'? 'I just could not believe that I'd been punched. That level of force to my head. I just totally did not see it coming. Then I was dragged away to another point.' 'Even if I don't lose the eye, I don't know how much vision I'm getting back. I won't know for some months because I'll have at least one more surgery.' 'I think the level of violence towards protesters at the moment is escalated, and it's because [of the] anti-protest laws, which has really licensed police to crack down. 'I think if nothing changes, there'll be more injuries.' A critical incident team is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the LECC. Ms Thomas is due in court over the protest on August 12.

The rise in international pressure over Gaza should be welcomed
On Tuesday, Australia joined with 27 countries including Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK to condemn Israel for the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians seeking aid. The countries also demanded an end to restrictions on food and medical supplies. A ceasefire was needed now. 'The suffering of civilians in Gaza has reached new depths. The Israeli government's aid delivery model is dangerous, fuels instability and deprives Gazans of human dignity,' the nations said. Australia's Home Affairs Minister, Tony Burke, went further. Many of Israel's actions were 'indefensible'. Burke said on ABC radio: 'We're all hoping that there'll be something that'll break this. We've seen too many images of children being killed, of horrific slaughter, of churches being bombed.' The statement also called for the release of Israeli hostages 'cruelly held captive by Hamas since 7 October 2023 [who] continue to suffer terribly'. Hamas must release the hostages and Israel must heed the international message and pull back its military actions. The statement followed the deaths of at least 79 people on Sunday near a UN food aid convoy at the Israel border. They were seeking flour. On Saturday, more than 30 died near two aid centres in southern Gaza. It is in Gaza that mothers, fathers and children are starving to death, that tens of thousands are in various stages of malnutrition leading to starvation, that people are dying from gunshots and missile fire while trying to reach humanitarian aid. It is there that tens of thousands have died following the indiscriminate massacre of 1200 Israelis across the border. A ceasefire, of course, is not the end of a war. It is impossible to know what Israel's endgame is. Will the war be over when Israel has built a 'humanitarian city' – critics call it a 'concentration camp', including former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert – for Palestinians, initially 600,000 on the ruins of Rafah, then expanding to take in 2.2 million? The 28 nations hit out against the Israeli proposal. 'Permanent forced displacement is a violation of international humanitarian law,' the joint statement said. In the past few days, the military has pushed into the southern and eastern districts of the Gazan city of Deir al-Balah, which had been removed from the conflict. Thousands of Palestinians had sought refuge there.

Justin Amler: Call for ceasefire wilfully ignores realities of Gaza conflict
On Monday, Australia joined 27 other Western countries in signing onto a statement regarding Gaza that was not only highly critical of Israel but bereft of any value in solving the ongoing Gaza war, or ending the suffering that results from it. It demonstrated once again the profound lack of understanding of the Middle East or the Hamas-Israel conflict that has become all too common in this country. It's also incredibly ill-timed. US mediators said on the weekend that Israel is 'bending over backwards' to reach a six-week ceasefire deal with Hamas that would see the humanitarian aid situation in Gaza improve dramatically, but Hamas is still refusing. So why would Hamas agree to any deal when statements like the one we just signed on to give it every reason to continue refusing? Far from neutral, the statement actually empowers Hamas and rewards its intransigence. The statement attacks the new Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid delivery model system set up by the US with support from Israel, saying it 'fuels instability and deprives Gazans of human dignity'. Yet it conveniently ignores the fact that the GHF has delivered almost 85 million meals to Gazans so far, and it's done so without Hamas interference — and Hamas had previously routinely hijacked aid to resell for profit and to bankroll terror. There is hunger in Gaza, but it's not because of Israel — it's because of Hamas, so while some civilians may go hungry, Hamas terrorists never do. For these countries to ignore the complicity between UN organisations and Hamas is more than just an oversight. The reason why Hamas is so adamant in its demands that the GHF be shut down is because it's a direct threat to the power of Hamas, which relies on weaponising aid by controlling civilians through food. The statement also blindly accepts as fact the figure that 800 Palestinians have been killed while seeking aid, without once questioning the validity of that claim, which is based largely on information provided by Hamas itself — often with amplification by UN agencies which take Hamas claims as gospel. It is simply astounding that information from a proscribed terror organisation, whose claims have repeatedly been debunked, continues to be accepted as fact. Would we accept casualty claims from ISIS as fact? Then why from Hamas? The statement does mention the Israeli hostages held by Hamas, and condemns 'their continued detention', but calls for their release via a negotiated ceasefire. However, elsewhere it calls for an 'immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire.' So why should Hamas release them in exchange for a ceasefire when Australia and the others are telling Israel it must accept a ceasefire unconditionally and permanently even if Hamas does not release anyone? Hamas is currently attempting to kidnap more Israeli soldiers, so the idea of calling for an 'immediate and permanent ceasefire' without addressing Hamas' stated goals of repeating the October 7 atrocities doesn't mean an end to the conflict, but at best a pause until the next one. This provision also contradicts our Foreign Minister's and Prime Minister's repeated declarations that Hamas must have no future role in Gaza. Because just how do they propose to make that happen with a permanent ceasefire that leaves Hamas in power? The statement's call for 'all parties to protect civilians and uphold the obligations of international law' is also farcical when the entire modus operandi of Hamas is a deliberate strategy to inflict casualties on Gaza's civilians through its use of human shields. But perhaps most telling of all is that Hamas has welcomed the statement. So if a terror organisation, proscribed by Australia, and whose acts have shocked all people of good conscience in their brutality and cruelty, welcomes such a statement, it clearly means that such a statement demonstrates serious flaws in its basic understanding of right and wrong. This statement does nothing to help either Palestinians or Israelis. It is neither constructive nor helpful in bringing about the end of the conflict. It ignores the fact that Hamas has rejected repeated ceasefire offers, including the one from just a few days ago. Instead of a joint statement calling on Hamas to end the war and release the hostages, the conditions required for ending the war, it instead focuses on denouncing Israel, which is defending itself against Hamas and attempting to release the hostages. If these 28 countries genuinely want peace, let them issue a joint demand that would be genuinely reality-based and effective: Return the hostages, disarm Hamas.
