Exciting times for US MMA fans as UFC drops traditional Pay-Per-View model

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) continues to shake up the combat sport landscape after closing a game-changing deal with Paramount that will bring an end to the MMA powerhouse's traditional Pay-Per-View model.
It was announced today that the UFC's parent company, TKO Group Holdings, Inc. - a premium sports and entertainment company - signed a seven-year media rights agreement with Paramount, confirming the latter as the exclusive home of all UFC live events in the United States of America going forward.
With its broadcast deal with ESPN set to expire later this year, TKO Group - which owns the UFC and WWE under one umbrella - will move forward with Paramount in 2026, distributing UFC's full slate of 13 marquee numbered events and 30 Fight Nights via its direct-to-consumer streaming platform, Paramount+, with select numbered events to be simulcast on CBS, Paramount's leading broadcast network.
This move is a game-changer for US fans as the PPV model has been a hot topic for many years, with many fans complaining, citing affordability, and often driven to piracy measures to catch their favourite superstars inside the Octagon.

UFC and Paramount Announce $7.7 Billion Deal to Stream Premium Events on Paramount+ Starting Next Year
Starting next year, UFC and Paramount will move away from the existing PPV model in making these premium events available at no additional cost to the expansive US subscriber base of Paramount+.
The deal, as per a release from the UFC and Skydance Corporation, which owns Paramount, is for $7.7 billion over seven years.
The days of US-based UFC fans paying for PPV, currently going at a rate of $79.99 each (R1420), will be something of the past as a Paramount+ subscription ranges at around $7.99 (R142 per month) to $12.99 (R231) a month for plans without ads and that include Showtime. Discounts are available for annual subscriptions.

Paramount, however, did not confirm if pricing plans will change or remain the same once the UFC deal starts.
Paramount did, however, state that it also intends to explore UFC rights outside the U.S. as they become available in the future.

Brevis has been playing alongside the Afghanistan superstar Khan since SA20's inception three seasons ago, while they were also on the winning side together for MI New York in the inaugural Major League Cricket Season. However, it was last season when Khan saw the best of the talented youngster after Brevis played a pivotal role in guiding the Newlands-based franchise to their first SA20 title with 291 runs at an average of 48.50 and strike-rate of 184.17. Coupled with a few stunning catches in the outfield, it earned Brevis the SA20 Rising Star award. But this was still not enough to entice the MI Cape Town hierarchy to keep hold of Brevis when the franchise's pre-list signing list was unveiled last month, which includes Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, George Linde, New Zealand swing bowler Trent Boult and West Indies blaster Nicholas Pooran. Brevis, though, sent a timely reminder with a blistering 125 not out off 56 balls in the second T20I against Australia this week. The mega six-hitting display saw Brevis become the holder of the highest individual T20I score by a Proteas batter - surpassing Faf du Plessis's mark set back in 2015. Khan, who was recently unveiled as a Red Bull global ambassador, was unable to provide clarity on Brevis' release, but was hoping to be reunited. 'It's a difficult question,' Khan said in an exclusive interview with Independent Media organised by the Austrian energy drinks supplier. 'I don't know how things happen, why not. But, you know, it's always, there is something that goes there and here. 'But hopefully, Brevis has performed really well for us in the last couple of years and three years, you know, that we deliver always the best. 'Hopefully, we get him back and in the team where he finishes the game for us.' MI Cape Town are likely to face a bidding war for Brevis' services when the players go under the hammer on September 9 with Pretoria Capitals' a potential suitor. The Capitals have a major advantage over MI Cape Town as they have a vastly superior R32.5million spending power in comparison to the defending champions' R11.5 million. This financial scenario could even place MI Cape Town out of the reckoning with the newly-applied 'Right To Match' card that teams are able to utilise when wanting to keep a player that has represented them in the past. Khan will still be keeping a close eye on the auction proceedings, especially after thoroughly enjoying leading MI Cape Town to their first-ever title last season. 'My first trophy as a captain was massive. For me it gave me lots of relief. You know, we didn't manage it in the first year I was a captain and then, you know, I got back surgery, didn't come for the second year and could see the result,' he said.

'It's a fantastic result. I am happy for the fans and the team,' Lafitte said after the match. 'It was a difficult game, they are a fantastic team, the game plan was good, because the objective was that when you don't have the ball, press high, and when you have the ball play a bit more. 'The first goal was good, and in the second half we had more possession and we used it well.' With the MTN8 taking centre stage this weekend, Lafitte and his charges will receive an extra weekend's rest. They will next face AmaZulu in a league encounter in just over a week. Interestingly, the Bloemfontein outfit has delivered their best football in the second halves of both their opening games, scoring decisive goals late in each contest. Lafitte credited this resilience and challenged his squad to keep evolving, stressing that they are not yet a finished product. 'It was a good performance and result for us, it's two games in a row with us scoring after 90 minutes and I think that it's good for us mentally. Moving forward it will be important to improve when we have the ball but I think we had a good start. 'I think it's important to have a structure, to break the space and find players free, and we will need to work for that for a long time. Sometimes you will make mistakes, but I would prefer if we made mistakes and learn from them and improve the quality of our game.' New centre-forward Clifford scored his first goal for the club—and, as one of only a few new recruits in a major squad overhaul, he provides a perfect example of Lafitte's vision. The coach also confirmed the club is still in the market for reinforcements before the transfer window closes. 'I am happy to be here, we have been working with the President to improve the squad, when the time is right, we will look into two or three players, a defender, midfielder and striker.'

Du Plessis seeks legend status in high-stakes clash with Chimaev in UFC 319
The United Center in Chicago, home to the Chicago Bulls, is set to witness another iconic sporting moment when Dricus du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev meet on Sunday morning. South African UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis is aiming to have his name mentioned among the greats of his sport as he attempts to defend his belt for a third time at the iconic United Center in Chicago on Sunday morning, 17 August 2025, at UFC 319. Du Plessis' task won't be easy as he prepares to do battle against one of the scariest fighters on the UFC roster in Khamzat Chimaev. The South African took a walk through the United Center and described having 'goosebumps' before entering the venue on the latest episode of UFC 319 Embedded. The arena is iconic, as the biggest National Basketball Association stadium in the country with a capacity of more than 20,000. It's home to the Chicago Bulls and has the famous statue of Chicago Bulls basketball legend Michael Jordan's 'flying' jump erected inside the venue. Below the statue, the words: 'The best there ever was. The best there ever will be,' have been etched. The statement is widely believed to be true of Jordan by many basketball fans, while for Du Plessis it's what he's aiming to become in the middleweight division of the UFC. He's tread the path to making the claim of being the best there ever has been superbly so far, by going undefeated in his first nine fights in the division and taking big names out on his way there, including Robert Whittaker, Israel Adesanya and Sean Strickland. At this moment, the two fighters contesting for the crown of the greatest UFC middleweight fighter of all time are Adesanya and Anderson Silva. Victory for Du Plessis on Sunday against Chimaev — who many believe is unbeatable, given not only his 8-0 record but also the fashion of his victories — will put him in the mix with those legendary fighters. 'Next best' Du Plessis has made no secret about the fact that Chimaev is one of the best fighters on the UFC roster, despite him only fighting twice in the UFC middleweight division so far, beating Kamaru Usman and former champion Whittaker before earning a title shot. His time before then was spent in the welterweight division. 'I never wanted to be gifted anything, I wanted to fight the best of the best,' Du Plessis said. 'Khamzat, as soon as he made the change to middleweight, I knew that our paths were destined to cross, and that's a fight I want. 'For me it's about the quality of opponents. Who did I beat? Fighting guys that are the best of the best, and Khamzat's that guy.' Chimaev has a reputation for ending fights in the first round, with five of his eight wins coming in the first five minutes. Du Plessis, though, is not planning to wear him out initially, but instead take the fight to him. 'I'm not going out there to survive anything, I'm going out there to hunt,' the South African champion said. 'I'm a hunter, not a survivor. I'm going out there to flourish from the first second to the last. I'm there to win in the most spectacular fashion possible. 'The whole world's excited for this fight because it's truly the two best guys fighting each other. Everybody knows Khamzat is the best 'next guy'. I just know that I am the best.' But how's the burly South African feeling after a 12-week camp in preparation for this bout? 'I'm feeling amazing, I'm feeling unstoppable,' he said. Two stars Chimaev, who moved from his home in Chechnya and became a dual citizen of the United Arab Emirates, compared the summer weather in Chicago to his new home. 'Hot weather, [it] feels like back in Dubai,' he said. For Chimaev, despite his massive reputation and the damage he has done in the octagon, this is also the biggest fight of his career. His thoughts on what many fans believe could be the biggest fight of the year? 'They should expect Khamzat Chimaev in the cage,' he said. It's an unclear answer but it is him acknowledging how his star has risen since entering the UFC octagon for the first time in 2020. Du Plessis' first UFC fight was also just a few months prior to that as the pair were little known at the time. Now their stars are aligning for a clash that's set to be spectacular.
