Chinese hacker charged in US for stealing COVID-19 research from universities

India Today09-07-2025
A Chinese national has been charged in the U.S. with hacking into American universities' computer systems to steal sensitive COVID-19 research, in what authorities describe as a coordinated operation directed by China's intelligence agency.Xu Zewei, who was arrested last week in Italy, faces a nine-count indictment in the Southern District of Texas. Prosecutors say Xu and fellow Chinese national Zhang Yu infiltrated networks belonging to US universities, immunologists, and virologists between February 2020 and June 2021.advertisementXu is awaiting extradition to the US while Zhang remains at large.
'The hacking of these American universities is not just a violation of intellectual property rights. It's an attack on American scientific innovation,' Nicholas J. Ganjei, the Houston-based US Attorney for the Southern District of Texas, said at a news conference.Authorities declined to name the universities that had been targeted but said two were located in the Southern District of Texas.Authorities allege that officers of China's Ministry of State Security, or MSS, directed Xu and others to conduct the hacking. A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately reply to an email seeking comment.Authorities allege Xu and Zhang were part of a group known as HAFNIUM, that targeted over 60,000 US entities, successfully victimizing more than 12,700 in order to steal sensitive information. One of those targeted was a law firm with offices worldwide, including in Washington, D.C.The charges against Xu include wire fraud, obtaining information by unauthorized access to protected computers and aggravated identity theft. The wire fraud charges carry sentences of up to 20 years in prison.Tuesday's announcement comes after the Justice Department earlier this month said two Chinese nationals had been charged with spying inside the United States on behalf of Beijing, including by taking photographs of a naval base.- EndsWith inputs from Associated Press

HC seeks record of charges framed against Cong MLA Sanjay Awasthi

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh high court has directed advocate general Anup Rattan to place on record the photocopies of the relevant documents of the case in which the special judge Solan has framed charges against Congress MLA from Arki, Sanjay Awasthi, and cricketer Vikramjeet Malik . The directions came from the division bench comprising Chief Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawali and Justice Ranjan Sharma during the resumed hearing of a suo moto case pertaining to the pending criminal cases against the MPs and MLAs in the state, on Tuesday. The advocate general informed the court that the special judge Solan had framed charges against Awasthi and Malik on April 21, 2022. MLA Awasthi is facing charges of wrongly authenticating the veracity of cricketer Malik's claim of being a resident of Solan to register himself with the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) and to play with the Himachal Ranji team. Awasthi, who is himself a cricketer, was then president of the Solan District Cricket Association and also served as a municipal councillor in Solan from 2000 to 2005. Malik, born in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, played in the Himachal Ranji team as a bowler and was later part of the Kings XI Punjab IPL team from 2009 to 2011. He then shifted to Rajasthan Royals in 2013, and later Royal Challengers Bangalore picked him in the 2016 auction. The state vigilance and anti-corruption bureau had registered a case of cheating, forgery, and false documentation against various cricketers from other states for obtaining Himachal domicile certificates on false documents. The vigilance had filed the first chargesheet in the court in June 2013 against cricketer Kuldeep Diwan, who claimed to be a resident of Kullu. Malik and another Delhi-based cricketer, Sobers Joban, are co-accused in the case. The high court has posted the matter for the next hearing on Sept 8. Blood on campus: Bullying allegations surface after student's murder in Ahmedabad school, probe handed over to crime branch

Ahmedabad: City police commissioner G S Malik transferred the investigation into the Class 10 student's murder to the crime branch on Wednesday after widespread criticism of the local police's lackadaisical approach and violent protests at the school. The decision came after parents and locals accused police of inaction and the school of negligence in handling the case. A crime branch officer said, "Both the victim and the two juvenile accused had been engaged in conflicts for around four years. The school authorities were fully aware of the situation but failed to take preventive action." On Tuesday, the students informed teachers that the victim and the accused had clashed again after school hours. The situation escalated when threats were issued to the victim. The victim succumbed to his injuries late Tuesday night, but it was the alleged delay in emergency response that fuelled public anger. Parents and locals launched large-scale protests, vandalizing school property and demanding accountability. "Locals alleged that school authorities did not call emergency services immediately. It took at least 30 minutes for the boy to get the first response," a senior crime branch officer said. Local police initially detained the accused juveniles following the attack. The crime branch is now probing the long-standing bullying between the students and lapses in school intervention, which parents believe could have prevented the fatal attack, said a senior officer.
