Veteran sports broadcaster Phumlani 'Mr Versatile' Msibi dies at 57
JOHANNESBURG - The sporting fraternity is mourning the loss of veteran football broadcaster and boxing commentator Phumlani Msibi, who has passed away at the age of 57.
Media house SuperSport confirmed his death. It's understood he died after a short illness.
The Durban-born storyteller known for his iconic line, 'Coach, thoughts please?', made history as SuperSport's first isiZulu-English boxing commentator, and became a beloved football anchor following the Premier Soccer League (PSL) broadcast deal in 2007.
Dubbed 'Mr Versatile', he was a fixture on shows like Soccer Africa and Mzansi Legends , and was celebrated for his insight, humility and passion.

Orlando Pirates confirm FOUR pre-season games in Spain!
Orlando Pirates are set to return to what is fast becoming their second home in Spain for pre-season next season. Pirates have spent their last three pre-seasons under former coach Jose Riveiro in Spain and will continue with that pattern. Last season Pirates played some top opposition in Spain including Sevilla and Granada of Spain. They then also took on Plymouth of England among others. Now having been enjoying the facilities in the country in the yesteryears, they have decided to return. It remains to be seen if Pirates would've appointed their new coach ahead of this tour to Spain. This publication has recently reported that they're in advanced talks to re-appoint former coach Rulani Mokwena ahead of nexts season. Pirates confirm preseason tour schedule amid anticipation of coach announcement
Orlando Pirates have confirmed their preseason fixture schedule in Spain as supporters impatiently wait for their announcement on a new coach. As has been the case over the past two years, the Sea Robbers will prepare for the new season in Spain's Marbella Centre. On the previous two occasions, Pirates went there under the supervision of Spanish mentor Jose Riveiro, who has since left the club to take up a head coach job at Egyptian giants Al Ahly. The Buccaneers are expected to announce Riveiro's replacement before the team kick off their preseason from July 8. During the tour of Spain, the Soweto giants will play exciting friendly matches against English side Bolton Wanderers, Cyprus champions Pafos FC and two Spanish sides Las Palmas and Granada CF. This won't be the first time that Pirates face off with the Spanish teams as they played Granada during their time in the European country ahead of last season. Their friendly clash ended in a 1-1 draw with Angolan winger Gilberto scoring for the Premier Soccer League giants. Pirates and Las Palmas played each other in 2023 and their battle ended in a goalless draw. The Soweto giants will play Bolton on July 11, Pafos on July 13, Las Palmas on July 17 and Granada on July 19.

Fast bowler David 'Syd' Lawrence dead at 61. Image: X David 'Syd' Lawrence, the first British-born black cricketer to play for England, has died at the age of 61, it was announced Sunday. Nearly a year ago it was revealed that Gloucestershire fast bowler Lawrence, who took 18 wickets in five Tests between 1988 and 1992, had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease, an incurable illness, which progressively damages parts of the nervous system. A statement from Lawrence's family given to Britain's PA news agency said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lawrence MBE following his brave battle with motor neurone disease." Lawrence bagged a five-wicket haul against the West Indies in 1991 to help England seal a series-levelling win at the Oval, with Desmond Haynes and Vivian Richards among the batsmen he dismissed. But his career all but ended the following year with a sickening injury when he shattered his kneecap running into bowl during a Test against New Zealand in Wellington. That was the end of his time with England, although he made a brief comeback for Bristol-based Gloucestershire, playing four four-first class games in 1997 before retiring for good after taking 625 wickets for the county. He later became president of Gloucestershire, with his old county saying in a social media post Sunday that they were "devastated" to learn of Lawrence's death. Following his MND diagnosis, there were emotional scenes when Gloucestershire won the T20 Blast final at Edgbaston last year, with captain James Bracey presenting the trophy to Lawrence. His MND diagnosis also hastened Lawrence's autobiography amid fears he would lose the ability to speak. Titled 'In Syd's Voice', and written with the help of cricket journalist Dean Wilson, the book was published this month. England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Richard Thompson hailed Lawrence as a "true trailblazer" who became a "powerful voice for inclusion and representation in our sport". There was a minute's applause in honour of Lawrence before the start of the third day's play in the first Test between England and India at Headingley on Sunday, with players and officials also wearing black armbands as a mark of respect.
