Yinson clarifies no buyout amid exploratory talks

The Star2 days ago

KUALA LUMPUR: Yinson Holdings Bhd has clarified that it is not in discussions with any third parties regarding a buyout exercise.
However, the group said its executive chairman, Lim Han Weng, is currently engaged in 'exploratory discussions' with various parties concerning potential corporate proposals related to their shareholding.
'However, given that the discussions are still at an exploratory stage, there is currently no conclusive indication that the discussions would give rise to a corporate proposal involving Yinson,' the oil and gas services firm said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.
The company will make the relevant announcement if and when a corporate exercise materialises, in accordance with the Main Market Listing Requirements.
Bloomberg reported that New York-based Stonepeak Partners is reportedly in exclusive talks to acquire Yinson, with the potential deal valuing the company at up to RM9bil (US$2.1bil), according to sources familiar with the matter.
This could be one of the largest deals in Malaysia this year.
Yinson closed down one sen, or 0.43%, at RM2.33 with 19.08 million shares traded.

Snap's first consumer AR 'Specs' glasses will arrive in 2026

French president Emmanuel Macron wears Snapchat's spectacle Augmented Reality glasses during the inauguration of the group's headquarters in France on May 19, 2025 in Paris. — AFP Snap Inc plans to launch its first consumer pair of augmented-reality glasses next year, beating a planned release from rival Meta Platforms Inc by several months. The new eyewear, called Specs, will be a smaller and lighter version of a device called Spectacles it made available to software developers last year, the company said Tuesday. Those glasses, which are available to developers for US$99 (RM419) per month, run the company's Snap OS operating system and are controlled using hand gestures, two features that will come to the consumer version. Snap has been working on smart glasses for years, though earlier iterations focused on image and video capture rather than augmented reality. Given Meta's growing success with its Ray-Bans glasses line and its planned move to launch AR glasses in 2027 code-named Artemis, Snap's decision to move forward with consumer-focused hardware has taken on fresh urgency. The Specs won't use an external battery and the updated design will focus on comfort and usability. The glasses will be available in black to start, with special editions to possibly follow later, chief executive officer Evan Spiegel said in an interview. He did not disclose the price or hardware specifications, except to say that the glasses will cost less than Apple's US$3,499 (RM 14,835) Vision Pro headset. The glasses also incorporate an artificial intelligence assistant, a way to play games with friends, and a "workstation' area where users can do things like browse the web and stream video. "We're really focused on and investing in glasses with things that the phone just isn't capable of,' Spiegel said. In the interview, Spiegel teased a handful of upcoming hardware features and software capabilities, such as using AI to help change a tire, set the dining room table or nail a tricky billiards shot. New versions of Snapchat Lenses, the company's augmented-reality experiences, run the gamut from having an archery match with friends to playing a 3D version of the classic Snake game. People use AR Lenses in the Snapchat camera over 8 billion times each day, and over 400,000 developers have built more than 4 million Lenses using Snap's tools, Spiegel said. Specs will also integrate with various AI models, including those from OpenAI and Alphabet Inc's Google, allowing developers to build AI-powered Lenses that can respond to various inputs in real time. The device will also support uses such as AI text translation, currency conversion and recipe suggestions based on what's in your refrigerator - capabilities that have already been built for the latest developer version of the company's smart glasses. As the wider tech industry grapples with concerns over AI and privacy, Spiegel said his company is taking the issue seriously. "Regardless of the demographic or age, privacy is incredibly important to us as a company and incredibly important for the future of these sorts of devices,' he said, adding that the device will strike a balance between providing the right features while protecting users' data. – Bloomberg

National Trades Union Congress exploring options to match retrenched Jetstar Asia staff to roles at SIA Group: Labour chief

Jetstar Asia said it will support the workers with retrenchment packages and employment support. - ST SINGAPORE: The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) is exploring possible opportunities to match retrenched Jetstar Asia employees, including crew and corporate staff, to suitable roles with the Singapore Airlines Group, said labour chief Ng Chee Meng. Over 500 employees from Jetstar Asia will be retrenched following the closure of the Singapore-based low-cost airline on July 31. In a Facebook post on June 11, Ng said that the NTUC Aerospace and Aviation Cluster will work with Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and Changi Airport Group to identify opportunities for the affected employees as well. He said: 'The news of Jetstar Asia's closure is a hit for the many employees of the airline. They have contributed much to the airline over the years.' He added that the NTUC and Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) were informed of the retrenchments in advance, and SMMWU has been working closely with Jetstar Asia to support the workers. The retrenchment benefits provided are in line with the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Excess Manpower and Responsible Retrenchment, but support goes beyond just financial compensation, Ng added. Starting next week, NTUC and NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute will be on-site at Changi Airport Terminal 1 to provide direct support, including career coaching, skills upgrading, and employability assistance, he said. In a statement on Wednesday (June 11), Jetstar Asia said it will support workers with retrenchment packages, employment support, or provide them with other opportunities within the Qantas group or with other airlines and aviation companies in Singapore. The airline's closure is part of a 'strategic restructure' by its parent company, Australian flag carrier Qantas. Retrenched employees will receive a redundancy payment of four weeks per year of service, a bonus for this financial year, a special 'thank you' payment as well as other benefits. In a separate statement, the Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) said it has worked closely with management and negotiated with the company to ensure that affected members and workers receive fair compensation. SMMWU is affiliated with the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). Jetstar Asia has been unionised since 2009. An inter-agency task force on retrenchment said in a separate statement that it is working closely with Jetstar and the SMMWU to support the affected workers. Called the Taskforce for Responsible Retrenchment and Employment Facilitation, it comprises the Ministry of Manpower, Workforce Singapore, the NTUC and the NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute. 'Our priority is to help the affected employees with employment facilitation," said the taskforce in a statement. - The Straits Times/ANN
