Man found not guilty by reason of insanity for slashing another man's throat with a blade

BreakingNews.ie10-07-2025
A man who slashed another man's throat with a blade at an addiction treatment centre in Co Limerick six years ago was found not guilty by reason of insanity, following a two-day trial.
Sean Beumer, (29), Edenmore Crescent, Raheny, Dublin 5, admitted slashing Aaron Babbington's throat with a makeshift knife which he made by fixing a razor blade to a plastic handle.

What the jury in the case did not hear was that Mr Babbington is presently serving an eight-year jail sentence following his conviction last April for attempted murder, after he admitted slashing another man's throat with a broken vodka bottle in Cork in 2023.
Mr Babbington had admitted the attempted murder of Jason Butler, Middleton, Co Cork, at Grand Parade, Cork City, on June 14th, 2023. Mr Butler died at Cork University Hospital two days after Mr Babbington slashed his throat in an unprovoked attack.
Sean Beumer, represented by senior defence barrister Lorcan Connolly, instructed by Tony Collier Solicitors, had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to assaulting Mr Babbington, causing him harm, and to producing a bladed weapon during the assault.
A jury of seven men and five women delivered unanimous verdicts that Beumer was not guilty by reason of insanity at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court on Thursday.

Consultant psychiatrist, Dr Ivan Murray, earlier told the jury that when Mr Beumer attacked Mr Babbington, he was in the throes of a 'psychotic' episode as a direct result of him not receiving anti-psychotic medication.
Mr Beumer and Mr Babbington were both attending a residential alcohol detox programme at Cuan Mhuire addiction centre, Bruree, Co Limerick, when Mr Beumer attacked Mr Babbington at the smoking area of the centre, in the early hours of December 13th, 2019.
Mr Babbington (30s), Churchfield, Co Cork, sustained three slash wounds to his throat as well as a slash wound to his thumb in the attack by Beumer, and he received stitches at University Hospital Limerick.
Beumer's trial heard he attended Cuan Mhuire on November 29th, 2019, with an established diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia; however, neither a GP who assessed Beumer for his suitability to attend Cuan Mhuire detox, nor Cuan Mhuire itself, had been aware of Beumer's diagnosis.

While at Cuan Mhuire in the days leading up to the attack on Mr Babbington, Mr Beumer had requested medication, but he did not receive it. All of the detox participants' non-medical medications were discontinued in one with Cuan Mhuire's detox policy at the time.
After his arrest, Mr Buemer told gardaí that psychotic thoughts and voices had been 'building' in his mind leading up to the assault on Mr Babbington, and that he eventually 'exploded' and slashed the Corkman's throat with a razor blade.
Mr Beumer told gardaí that he had been experiencing hallucinations, which he claimed had 'brainwashed' him into erroneously believing he and his family would be murdered if he didn't do what he did.
There was no CCTV footage of the attack, and there was no evidence that Mr Babbington had done anything to provoke Mr Beumer.

Defence witness, Dr Ivan Murray, who conducted an independent mental health assessment in respect of Mr Beumer, provided uncontested evidence that, in his 'professional opinion', there had been a 'definite link' between Mr Beumer not receiving his anti-psychotic medication and him assaulting Mr Babbington.
Dr Murray said that, in his view, Mr Beumer had met the criteria to support his plea to the offences that he was not guilty by reason of insanity. Dr Murray said Mr Beumer had been 'unable to refrain from his actions', and that Beumer's psychotic thoughts had 'overwhelmed his decision-making' on the night.
The psychiatrist agreed with prosecuting barrister, Lily Buckley, that Mr Beumer's schizophrenia diagnosis should have been flagged with Cuan Mhuire in advance of him attending there for alcohol detox.
Dr Murray said, in his opinion, Mr Beumer requires a 'multi-disciplinary' medical approach to treating his schizophrenia, including a MRI scan on his brain in order to rule in or rule out the possibility, although a 'rare' one, that Mr Beumer may be suffering from a 'lesion' on his brain that he said could be causing his mental health issues.

Judge Colin Daly heard that Mr Beumer continues to suffer from schizophrenia symptoms despite being on anti-psychotic medication.
The judge ordered that a medical report in respect of Mr Beumer's mental health needs be furnished to the court following a further assessment of Mr Beumer at the Central Mental Hospital within the next 14 days.

Dublin youth charged with raping female when he was aged 15

A youth has been charged with raping a female in a Dublin apartment when he was aged 15. The 18-year-old appeared at the Dublin Children's Court this week and was remanded on bail to appear again in September to be served with a book of evidence and sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court. Advertisement The offence allegedly occurred in late 2022 in the city's north side. The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has yet to enter a plea. There was no objection to bail. The Children's Court, which has lesser sentencing powers, does not have jurisdiction to hear a rape trial. Legal aid was granted. Bail terms stated he must have no contact with the complainant, not leave the jurisdiction, surrender his passport, provide gardaí with a contact phone number, sign on once a week and remain out of the area where the alleged incident occurred.

Stepfather of grooming gang fantasist Eleanor Williams dies after being attacked in family home

The stepfather of grooming gang fantasist Eleanor Williams has died nearly three weeks after he was allegedly attacked inside the family home — with police now expected to launch a murder investigation. Ronnie Johnston, 57, died 20 days after suffering catastrophic injuries in an alleged assault that led to the arrest of a 54-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man. The incident took place at the end-terrace house on Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness — the childhood home of Williams, 24, whose lies about being trafficked by an Asian grooming gang tore the Cumbrian town apart. A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: 'A police investigation is on-going after a man who suffered life-threatening injuries following an incident in Barrow, has died. 'On 12 July 2025, emergency services attended an address in Teasdale Road in Barrow following a report of two people having suffered injuries inside the address. 'A 57-year-old man was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died overnight on Tuesday (29 July) into Wednesday (30 July). 'A 19-year-old who suffered a broken arm was arrested on the evening of 12 July 2025 on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He was subsequently released on police bail and remains on police bail whilst investigations into the incident remain on-going. 'A 54-year-old woman arrested at the same address on the same evening also remains on police bail.' Painter and decorator Mr Johnston was discovered with life-threatening injuries at the end-terrace property in Teasdale Road shortly before midnight on Saturday July 12. He is the husband of Williams' mother Allison Williams, who stood by her daughter as she falsely claimed she was trafficked and beaten by an Asian gang in Cumbria. She alleged she had been brutally raped and trafficked across the north of England and overseas in a string of Facebook posts in May 2020, shared more than 100,000 times. Her purported ordeal sparked protests and months of unrest in her home town, and prompted thousands to donate cash. Williams was later convicted of perverting the course of justice when her dramatic accounts were exposed as being completely fantastical. A trial at Preston Crown Court heard Williams inflicted the wounds herself using a hammer and she was jailed for eight-and-a-half years in March 2023. Three men falsely accused over a three-year period were driven to the brink of suicide after being targeted. One of them - Jordan Trengove - spent more than 70 days in prison, sharing a cell with a convicted sex offender after he was charged as a result of Williams' bogus claims. Ms Williams, 54, a former Labour councillor, was later accused of refusing to return £22,000 donated by well-wishers. She later said she donated the funds to two homeless charities. Williams was released from prison in January under the Government's early release scheme designed to free up space in prisons. The serial liar was revealed by Daily Mail to be making a 'new life for herself' outside of Barrow. A source said: 'She was a model prisoner and she was no threat to society at all. 'She was working during her time in jail as a receptionist for an electrical equipment company and proved to the authorities that she was suitable to be released. 'She's currently living outside Barrow and doesn't know whether she'll be able to return. 'It's an isolated town where everyone is involved in everyone else's business which would make life impossible for her at the moment.' Cumbria Police added: 'Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, referring to incident 355 of July 12. 'Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.'

Man brandished 'gun' made of paper bag at police in Telford

A man has been jailed after using an imitation firearm made out of a brown paper bag to intimidate police in Sylvester, 37, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting an emergency worker, possession of an imitation firearm to cause distress, possession of class A drugs and attempted burglary in Friday, at Shrewsbury Crown Court, he was sentenced to 19 months in incident happened on 22 February, when West Mercia Police officers were called to reports of a man using a trolley to try and break into a shop in Telford town centre. Upon their arrival, Sylvester used a jumper to cover his face and forged the gun by folding the brown paper charged at the officers in the patrol car brandishing the "gun".The car, while trying to move away from him, got stuck behind car park barriers, which was when Sylvester threatened one of the officers through its window and kicked the officers called for back up as it was dark and they believed he had a real opened the car's boot and threatened the officers again when they got out of the car, and a chase was tackled and arrested."Sylvester's actions were calculated, going to great lengths to ensure officers were called to the scene, including threatening members of the public and trying to break into a shop," said Ch Insp Matt Sanders."He covered his face with a jumper to ensure he wasn't recognised by officers, before manipulating an object to look like a small firearm so he could threaten whoever was responding."The bravery and professionalism shown by both police constables that evening was nothing short of extraordinary."
