Gucci-owner Kering in talks with Qatar for sale of Milan building, Corriere says

Zawya2 days ago
ROME: Gucci-owner Kering is in talks with a member of the Qatari royal family for the sale of a building in Milan's top shopping avenue, Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported on Saturday.
The deal could help the French luxury group cut its debt, which ballooned to more than 10 billion euros ($11.58 billion) in 2024, following a series of expensive acquisitions.
Among them was the 18th century property in Via Montenapoleone, which the French group bought from Blackstone for 1.3 billion euros in April last year.
Corriere said Kering was looking at selling a majority stake in the company through which it owns the building, based on a "similar valuation".
It added that the buyer would be a vehicle linked to former Qatari Prime Minister and real estate billionaire Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al-Thani.
Kering declined to comment on the report. It was not immediately possible to contact Al-Thani for a comment.
In April, when Corriere first reported about a possible Qatari-Kering deal for the Via Montenapoleone property, the Qatar Investment Authority denied it had any interest.
Kering, which appointed former Renault CEO Luca de Meo to lead the group from September, is under pressure to trim debt and revive declining sales, particularly at its top brand Gucci. Qatar real estate sector records transactions worth $2.4bln in Q2: Aqarat

The second-quarter data affirms the strong trajectory of real estate sector in the country, driven by a notable rise in transaction volumes and renewed momentum in lease registrations, especially in mid-income and high-demand areas. Established investment hubs such as The Pearl and Lusail continue to attract investors, while emerging areas like Al Wakrah are becoming key pillars for expanding the market base and enhancing its diversity In the strongest quarterly performance since Q3, 2020, Qatar's real estate sector recorded transactions worth QR8.9bn in the second quarter of this year, up 29.8% compared to the same period in 2024. This was revealed by Qatar's Real Estate Regulatory Authority (Aqarat) in the first edition of its 'Real Estate Bulletin'. The bulletin monitors developments in the country's real estate sector and highlights trends in real estate transactions, shifts in the rental market, and the geographical distribution of demand. Real estate transactions also saw a significant rise during the mentioned period, reaching 1,915 transactions across various categories, marking a 44% increase compared to the second quarter of 2024. This represents the strongest quarterly performance since the third quarter of 2020. Doha Municipality accounted for the 'largest share' of transaction volume, with sales totalling around QR4.8bn, followed by Al Rayyan Municipality with QR1.9bn. According to Aqarat, residential transactions accounted for approximately 44% of the total number of real estate transactions during the period. The Pearl topped the list of 'most sought-after' areas, recording some 266 transactions, followed by Lusail with 125 transactions — driven by their strategic locations, quality projects, and growing appeal to both investors and residents alike. Doha recorded the highest percentage of sold units, accounting for around 39.2%, followed by Al Rayyan at 18.2%, and Al Daayen at 17.2%. The rental market was also active, with as many as 58,246 lease contracts registered during the first half of the year — the highest rate recorded for the first half in the past six years. This represents an increase of approximately 26% compared to the same period last year, which recorded 46,073 contracts, Aqarat noted. Al Wakrah Municipality witnessed the 'highest demand' for rental contracts, especially in areas like Al Wukair, Al Mashaf, and Al Thumama, which together recorded 5,337 contracts, due to their popularity among tenants for offering reasonably priced housing options. The second-quarter data affirms the strong trajectory of real estate sector in the country, driven by a notable rise in transaction volumes and renewed momentum in lease registrations, especially in mid-income and high-demand areas. Established investment hubs such as The Pearl and Lusail continue to attract investors, while emerging areas like Al Wakrah are becoming key pillars for expanding the market base and enhancing its diversity. Aqarat noted, 'The sector is expected to continue benefiting from the accelerating pace of digital transformation, improved regulatory transparency, and strategic investment in infrastructure in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. 'Barring any major external disruptions, these strategic pillars position the market for sustainable growth, expanded investment participation, and strengthening Qatar's position as a leading real estate investment destination in the region.' © Gulf Times Newspaper 2025 Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. Norway asks wealth fund to review Israel assets after uproar

The Norwegian government has ordered its sovereign wealth fund to review all investments in Israel after a report about its stake in an Israeli company linked to the war in Gaza caused a public outcry. Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg, who oversees the $1.9 trillion wealth fund, told reporters in Oslo on Tuesday he 'understands people are asking questions' about how closely the fund is following its ethical guidelines, which exclude companies that contribute to serious abuses of human rights, including war crimes. The former head of Nato said he will ask the fund and its external ethics adviser for a 'renewed review into the fund's investments in Israeli companies'. "The purpose is to ensure that the fund is not invested in companies that contribute to the illegal occupation of the West Bank and the war in Gaza," he said in a statement. The fund's investment in the Bet Shemesh Engines is worrying, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store told broadcaster NRK. "We must get clarification on this because reading about it makes me uneasy," he said said. A report by the Aftenposten said Norway's wealth fund had holdings in the company, which the newspaper said is servicing fighter jets used in the attacks in Gaza. Pressure on the fund — the world's largest — from activists and members of parliament has grown steadily since the start of Israel's war against Hamas in October 2023. Officially known as the Norges Bank Investment Management, the fund holds about 1.5 per cent of all listed equities globally. It sold its stakes in an Israeli energy company and a telecoms group in the past year, and its ethics council has said it is reviewing whether to recommend divesting holdings in five banks. It owns stakes in 8,700 companies worldwide, and as of the end of last year, the investments in 65 Israeli companies totalled about $2.1 billion. The fund, which has previously excluded companies due to their links to Israel's occupation of the West Bank, started investing in Bet Shemesh Engines in 2023. It increased its holdings to 2.1 per cent in 2024 from 1.3 per cent in 2023, according to NBIM figures. In May, the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions voted unanimously to adopt a resolution to boycott Israel and calling on the Norwegian government to divest funds from companies that support the country.
