Will Smith feels ‘brand new' after putting Oscars slap controversy behind him
Appearing on 1Xtra, Smith told host Remi Burgz: 'After the Oscars I, like, shut it down for a minute and really went into the internal work…
'All of a sudden, it was like there was a manhole cover over some unexplored areas, and like the manhole cover came off, and it was scary for a minute.
'Then all of a sudden all of these new thoughts, new energies and new creativity came through.
'So, I feel like I'm brand new.
'I feel like the greatest creative period of my life will be in the next, you know, five to 10 years.'
Smith, who has starred in blockbusters such as the Men In Black and Bad Boys franchises, stormed the stage at the 94th Academy Awards and hit Rock after he made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's hair loss.
Smith won the Oscar for best actor for his leading role in King Richard the same night.
Asked what it was like to make such a mistake in front of the world, Smith said: 'For the first time in my career, having to deal with a level of disapproval that I'd never had to experience.
'It's brutiful – it's brutal but beautiful.
'The addiction to the approval of others that I had to dissolve, brutiful.'
The Academy Awards called Smith's behaviour 'unacceptable and harmful', and banned him from the ceremony for a period of 10 years.
Smith released his first record in two decades earlier this year.
The album, Based On A True Story, also references the Oscars incident.

These stunning NYC restaurants have been shortlisted for this year's Restaurant & Bar Design Awards
The Oscars of restaurant design are back—and New York has shown up dressed to kill. The annual Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, which spotlight the most jaw-dropping dining spaces around the globe, just revealed its 2025 shortlist and a handful of NYC spots made the cut. If you needed an excuse to eat somewhere pretty enough to make your Instagram followers jealous, consider this it. Brass, designed by Islyn Studio, is a love letter to glam nostalgia. With gleaming metallic surfaces, rich textures and a mood that feels part supper club, part glossy fever dream, it's no surprise it's up for multiple categories, including Standalone and Heritage Building. Translation: historic but make it chic. La Tête d'Or, Daniel Boulud's latest Midtown showpiece, is another strong contender. Velvet banquettes, an amber glow and a kitchen that doubles as an architectural centerpiece make it a visual feast before the steak even hits the table. The design has been recognized for both Lighting and In Another Space, but the 45-day-aged rib-eye might deserve an award of its own. The View, from Rockwell Group, is shortlisted in the Hotel category and practically cheats with its built-in asset: skyline vistas. Add in Rockwell's signature polish and you've got a dining room that reminds you why people put up with New York rent prices. Ken Fulk's Felix Roasting Co. has long been the city's most decadent caffeine fix, with marble counters, vintage-inspired fixtures and the kind of jewel-box interiors that make your flat white feel like a fashion accessory. The café nod proves that even your morning espresso deserves drama. The Otter, a hotel restaurant from Hannes Peer, is pure playfulness, combining bold colors, luxe finishes and splashy murals. Shortlisted across multiple categories, it proves that maximalism is alive and well downtown. And then there's Mission Ceviche, the first full-service restaurant from chef José Luis Chavez. Airy interiors, biophilic design touches, and South American flair landed it nominations in Standalone and Surface Interiors. Between the Nikkei ceviche and the moody-but-fresh aesthetic, it's basically a mini vacation on East 74th Street. They're not alone: Obvio, Clemente Bar, Twin Tails, Postcard and Crane Club also earned recognition this year, underscoring just how wide and varied New York's design talent runs, from inventive visual identities to hotel showpieces and intimate standalones.

Guillermo del Toro's new film Frankenstein is heading to selected UK cinemas ahead of its Netflix premiere in November. The unexpected cinema release for the adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic gothic novel has been announced for October 17 before launching on the streaming platform on November 7. Frankenstein filmed on location in Scotland, with large parts of Edinburgh shut down last September. Locations included the Royal Mile, Parliament Square, St Giles Street and the High Street. Film crews took over Edinburgh's Old Town in September last year | Getty Images Filming also took place at Dunecht House in Aberdeenshire, Hospitalfield House in Arbroath and Glasgow Cathedral. Oscar Isaac leads the cast playing the mad scientist Victor Frankenstein, while Saltburn's Jacob Elordi takes on the role at Frankenstein's Monster. Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein in the film directed by Guillermo del Toro | Ken Woroner / Netflix Charles Dance, Christoph Waltz and Burn Gorman, who was seen during filming in Edinburgh, have also been confirmed. Writer and director Guillermo del Toro is a three-time Oscar winner, most recently winning best animated feature for his stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio in 2023. He also won an Oscar for the 2017 film The Shape of Water. He has been inspired by Shelley's books since he was a child, previously describing his fascination with monsters in a 2008 interview with The Scotsman. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He said: 'Even as a kid, I knew that monsters were far more gentle and far more desirable than the monsters living inside 'nice people'. I think being a monster, and accepting that you are a monster, gives you the leeway to not behave like one. 'There are truths about oneself that are really bad and hard to admit. But when you finally have the courage and say them, you liberate yourself. And monsters are a personification of that." Del Toro has been working on a Frankenstein film for more than a decade.
