Asean and GCC can be anchors of stability and engines for growth, says PM
KUALA LUMPUR: Asean and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have the means and responsibility to rise as anchors of stability and engines for growth, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said deliberations during the Second Asean-GCC Summit, being held here concurrently with the 46th Asean Summit, will be crucial in ensuring that the partnership remains dynamic, responsive and impactful.

"So the Asean-GCC relationship will certainly be key in enhancing inter-regional collaboration, building resilience and securing sustainable prosperity for all.
"I look forward to a meaningful exchange of views that will pave the way for tangible initiatives under our growing and enduring partnership," Anwar said in his opening remarks during the opening of the Second Asean-GCC CSummit on Tuesday (May 27).
Anwar said the foundation for this collaboration was laid during the inaugural summit in Riyadh in 2023.
"And your presence is a testament to our shared commitment to foster strong bonds. The theme for Asean this year is Inclusivity and Sustainability.
"And we proceed with the Asean-GCC Framework of Cooperation 2024 to 2028, which was adopted at the inaugural (Asean-GCC) summit," he said.

According to Anwar, GCC was Asean's seventh-largest trading partner in 2023, with US$130.7bil (RM550bil).
"As I said last night, Asean happens to be the most peaceful region, (and also) economically vibrant and dynamic.
"GCC also, as I said, made a major paradigm shift from a gloomy desert culture to a vibrant, promising, dynamic economy with the latest state-of-the-art technology (including) digital and AI expertise," he said.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the extraordinary achievement of gathering the leaders here.
"In our experience in this region (it is) quite extraordinary... to be able to bring not only Asean leaders but the most dynamic GCC countries into this region to work together, build on trust, cooperation and true friendship," he said.
The first summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in October 2023 saw the gathered leaders endorse the Asean-GCC Framework of Cooperation (2024-2028), a historic milestone in inter-regional relations.
The GCC, comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia,and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was founded in 1981 to foster political and economic cooperation among Gulf countries.

Sarawak supports Motac's bid to regulate tourism transport after deadly Gerik bus crash
KUCHING (June 12): The federal government's proposal to return regulatory powers over tourism-related transport to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) is a step in the right direction, said Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. He said the tragic bus crash in Gerik, Perak, on June 9, which claimed the lives of 15 university students, highlighted serious lapses in transport safety oversight, making any effort to improve public safety both necessary and welcome. 'If that intention becomes a reality and it can improve the roads and the system we are having now, of course I would welcome it. And I think it's not just me, because it's all Malaysians who would welcome it,' he told a press conference at the Baitul Makmur II Building here today. When asked whether Motac has the expertise to take on the responsibility, Abdul Karim said the ministry must develop the right approach on its own. He stressed that the issue is not merely about reallocating responsibility, but about ensuring a coordinated and effective enforcement framework. 'I know it's not easy, because this relates to JPJ (Road Transport Department), technology platforms, enforcement and many agencies are involved but coming up with ideas is one thing. Making sure they work is another,' said Abdul Karim. Citing media reports, he pointed out that the bus driver involved in the crash had 18 outstanding traffic summonses, and the vehicle had more than 20. 'That means something is wrong. So, if there is any entity, be it a ministry or any other body, that can address this problem and make the system better, of course we will support it,' he said. In the aftermath of the crash, Motac renewed its call to regain regulatory authority over tourism vehicles, arguing that the current system, overseen by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), lacks a comprehensive safety framework. The ministry said that the earlier transfer of regulatory powers away from Motac created a void in oversight, weakening Malaysia's transport safety assurance mechanisms, particularly as the country prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. The incident has reportedly raised concerns among international stakeholders involved in tourism and student exchange programmes across Asean, the Middle East, China, Japan, and South Korea, potentially affecting Malaysia's image as a safe travel destination.

Anwar: Govt may set up TVET commission
MELAKA: The government is mulling the proposal to establish a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission in line with the TVET reform agenda that is being actively implemented. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was because the development of TVET under the National TVET Council, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, has shown encouraging results, including an increase in the number of students. "I appreciate the role of the TVET Council, but as those closely monitoring the sector's development, we must consider proposals such as establishing a dedicated commission for TVET, and we will assess this as swiftly as possible in response to the sector's evolving needs. "With the number of students and types of training increasing, I, together with the Finance Ministry, will look into whether current facilities are adequate and how to create synergy between government-linked companies, private sector players, and existing TVET institutions." Anwar said this when opening the National TVET Day 2025 celebration at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh, here today.
