Aavin's milk powder plant at Padalur likely to be ready by December
Being established by Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation Ltd., which owns the Aavin brand, the 60-tonne plant is being set up with NABARD Rural Infrastructure Development Fund 2022-23. The plant will have a capacity to process about six lakh litres of milk a day.
The plant is coming up with a floor space of 8,000 square metres. It would be a seven-storey structure and equipped with advanced machinery required for manufacture of milk powder, including skimmed milk powder, and other dairy products such as dairy whitener and butter.
While the civil construction works are being executed at a cost of ₹26.53 crore, work is also underway on erecting machinery worth ₹120 crore, said A. Annadurai, Commissioner of Milk Production and Dairy Development, who reviewed the progress of civil works and the erection of machinery along with Collector S. Arunraj and other senior officials on Friday.
Mr. Annadurai instructed the officials to expedite the works and complete them by December.
This will be one of the biggest such plants in the State and benefit milk suppliers from 11 districts including Perambalur, Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Karur and Pudukottai. Surplus milk would be converted into milk powder and other dairy products at the plant.
Mr. Annadurai discussed with the officials the quantum of current milk procurement in the districts, the milk routes and creation of link roads for smooth transportation of milk to the plant from the producers in remote villages.

Aavin's milk powder plant in Salem to commence ops in Feb 2026
SALEM: About 80% of the construction work of Aavin's new 30 metric-tonne-per-day milk powder plant in Salem, which began in February 2024, is now complete, and the plant is expected to be ready by December. Commercial production is expected to start in February 2026. The Rs 60-crore project will triple the plant's current processing capacity from 10 metric tonnes to 30 metric tonnes per day, making it one of the most advanced dairy facilities in the state. Civil works have been completed on five floors of the six-storey building, and machinery procurement will begin soon, followed by installation and testing. Officials say the expansion will help Aavin (Salem) easily handle its milk procurement, the highest in the state. Aavin (Salem) currently procures 6.5 lakh litres of milk everyday from 2.25 lakh farmers from 787 primary societies. Of this, 3.5 lakh litres are sent as raw milk to other cities, 2.5 lakh litres are used for the Salem market, and 50,000 litres are turned into products such as milk powder, butter, ghee, curd, buttermilk, paneer, khova and milkshakes. These products are packed in tetra packs and have a six-month shelf life. The new plant will increase milk powder output, and also produce dairy whitener and whole milk powder. It will run on a fully computerised SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, which automates operations such as temperature control and equipment monitoring. The milk will be concentrated using a "five-effect falling film evaporator" fitted with thermal vapour recompression (TVR) technology. In simple terms, this method reuses steam from one stage to heat the next stage, saving energy and making the evaporation process more efficient. This is the step where water is removed from the milk to turn it into powder. From the new facility, Aavin will be able to produce whole milk powder, skimmed milk powder, and dairy whitener in both 25-kg bulk packs and smaller retail packs of 200g, 500g, and 1kg. Currently, Tamil Nadu has only four milk powder manufacturing plants in Erode, Madurai, Tiruvannamalai and Salem. "With the expansion of milk powder plant capacity from 10 to 30 metric tonnes per day and the addition of advanced machinery, the Salem plant will become the most modern and largest capacity milk powder unit in the State," said P Kumareswaran, general manager of Aavin, Salem.

Aavin must bring back subsidised cattle feed, say dairy farmers
COIMBATORE: Stating that Aavin halted the supply of subsidised cattle feed since 2021, cattle farmers have urged the milk cooperative to resume the supply to help dairy farmers. Sources said the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers' Federation Limited (Aavin) supports cattle farmers through a subsidy-based fodder program to enhance milk production and animal health. Under this initiative, fodder slips, fodder seeds, tree saplings and chaff cutters are distributed to farmers at subsidised rates. The programme also includes capacity building and training for progressive dairy farmers to promote better fodder management practices. Aavin allocated funds to distribute these resources across 16 district unions till 2021. This programme, coupled with veterinary services and livestock insurance under the National Livestock Mission, aims to improve animal productivity, reduce costs for farmers and sustain loyalty to Aavin's cooperative network. P Kaleeswaran, a cattle farmer from Kinathukadavu taluk said, "In order to ensure year-round availability of nutritious fodder for better milk production and cattle health, and promote sustainable agricultural practices within the cooperative dairy ecosystem, the subsidised feed was distributed through Aavin by the state government. Under the scheme, a complex feed weighing 50 kg was given to farmers for Rs 750 instead of Rs 1,000 per bag. However, it was stopped completely. Considering the cattle farmers' condition, the government should resume the supply of the subsidised feed." A senior official from Aavin, Coimbatore said, "As per the government's policy decision, the subsidy-based feed was stopped in 2021. Aavin is still providing the complex feed without subsidy. For the benefit of the farmers, the price of the feed has been reduced by Rs 50 per 50 kg bag, from Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,250."
