From police chief to escaped murderer: Timeline of Arkansas manhunt for Grant Hardin
He's been described as a "sociopath," and "evil" by those who have encountered him, but now Grant Hardin, the former police chief of a small Arkansas town who was imprisoned for murder and rape, is the subject of a massive manhunt since escaping from a correctional facility this week.
Hardin, 56, who was briefly police chief in the town of Gateway, near the Arkansas-Missouri border, simply walked out of a guarded gate at the North Central Unit in Calico Rock, Arkansas, on Sunday afternoon, according to a probable cause affidavit charging him with second-degree escape.
Hardin was dressed as a law enforcement officer pushing a loading cart in surveillance video that captured him absconding from the prison.

"Inmate Hardin impersonated a corrections officer in dress and manner, causing the corrections officer operating the gate to open the gate and allow inmate Hardin to walk away from the North Central Unit," according to the affidavit filed Tuesday in an Izard County court.
As police continue to scour the Ozark Mountains for the fugitive, here is a timeline of the violent crimes that got him sentenced to 80 years in prison -- and the brazen escape that has prompted national headlines:
Feb. 23, 2017 -- James Appleton, a 59-year-old water department worker for the city of Garfield, Arkansas, in Benton County, is shot in the head and killed by Hardin, prosecutors said. Appleton's body was moved to a car, where investigators found him.
October 2017 -- Hardin pleads guilty to murder after the fatal shooting of Appleton. He is sentenced to 30 years in prison. The former police chief never revealed a motive for killing Appleton.
Following Hardin's escape, former Benton County, Arkansas, prosecutor Nathan Smith, who helped put Hardin in prison, told ABC News' affiliate station KHBS in Fayetteville, Arkansas, that Hardin is a "sociopath." Smith added, "He's extremely dangerous. He's already proven that he has no moral core or center."

Amid the ongoing search for Hardin, Appleton's sister, Cheryl Tilman, now the mayor of Gateway, describes Hardin in an interview with KHBS as "an evil man."
Feb. 8, 2019 -- While serving his stentence for killing Appleton, Hardin pleads guilty to the 1997 rape of an elementary school teacher in her classroom in Rogers, Arkansas, authorities said. The Rogers Police Department linked Hardin to the rape by matching DNA found at the crime scene to a DNA sample Hardin submitted upon entering prison. He was sentenced to an additional 50 years.
May 2023 -- HBO Max releases the real-crime documentary "Devil in the Ozarks" that detailed the rape of the Rogers school teacher and two-decade investigation to bring the perpetrator to justice.
May 25, 2025 -- Arkansas Department of Corrections officials announce that Hardin escaped from the North Central Unit prison, while posing as a corrections officer. Surveillance video recorded Hardin at 2:50 p.m. local time pushing a loading cart and wearing what authorities initially described as the type of dark colored uniform worn by Arkansas Department of Corrections (ADC) officers. He was waved through the sally port from which he escaped by a Corrections officer. authorities said. ADC officials later said that Hardin was "wearing a makeshift outfit designed to mimic law enforcement."
May 26, 2025 -- The U.S. Marshals Eastern Arkansas Fugitive Task Force announces it is assisting the Izard County Sheriff's Office in the search for Hardin, as officers from multiple law enforcement agencies searched the North Central Unit facility looking for the fugitive. Officers are seen by an ABC News crew stopping and searching vehicles and going door-to-door in communities around the prison.
"An active search remains in effect involving a number of law enforcement agencies from across the state," an ADC spokesperson said.
May 28, 2025 -- The search for Hardin continues.

In an effort to make the library a major draw, Trump is hoping to showcase the $400 million luxury jet gifted to him by Qatar as a centerpiece exhibit, according to the Journal. The idea appears be lifted from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, where Reagan's retired Air Force One is on display. 'The president wants something more akin to what Reagan has,' Felix Lasarte, an attorney for the Trump Organization scouting library locations across Florida, told the Journal. FAU's campus in Boca Raton is said to be the main target for the library due to its proximity to Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort. The White House and FAU did not immediately respond to the Daily Beast's request for comment.

That's right, the first black person and the first openly LGBTQ person to serve as the White House press secretary has not only written a book bashing her time in office, but she's left the Democratic Party and is now an Independent, according to a press release announcing her new book, Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines . While Jean Pierre is not definitive over her reasoning for abandoning the Democratic Party, she did note that she's chosen to 'look beyond party lines' and is embracing 'life as an independent,' adding that this decision didn't come lightly, ABC News reports. 'Until January 20, I was responsible for speaking on behalf of the President of the United States,' Jean-Pierre said in a statement, ABC News reports. 'At noon on that day, I became a private citizen who, like all Americans and many of our allies around the world, had to contend with what was to come next for our country.' Jean-Pierre's departure comes as the Democratic Party is looking to gain any kind of traction following Donald Trump's election win in 2024. 'I determined that the danger we face as a country requires freeing ourselves of boxes,' she said in the release. 'We need to be willing to exercise the ability to think creatively and plan strategically. We need to be clear-eyed and questioning, rather than blindly loyal and obedient as we may have been in the past.' 'Freeing ourselves of boxes is truly at the heart and soul of my new book, Independent,' she added. Many Black women have grown weary of supporting a party that blindly neglects their interests. Black women are not just supporters of Democrats; they are the backbone of the party. Bouncy castle operator cleared in tragedy that killed six
An Australian bouncy castle operator at the centre of a tragedy in 2021 that killed six children and seriously injured three has been cleared of breaching safety laws. A court found Rosemary Anne Gamble, who runs the business Taz-Zorb, not guilty, ruling that the incident was "due to an unprecedented weather system" that was "impossible to predict". The victims, who were on a bouncy castle at a primary school fun day in Devonport, Tasmania, fell about 10m (33ft) after strong winds blew the castle skywards at a school fair. The verdict on Friday caused anguish among their families, with some crying out in court in disbelief, ABC News reported. Prosecutors had accused Ms Gamble of failing to anchor the castle adequately, but her defence argued she could not have done more to eliminate or reduce hazards that led to the tragedy. Magistrate Robert Webster agreed with the defence and found that the incident happened due to a dust devil - an upward spiralling vortex of air and debris - that was "unforeseen and unforeseeable". "Ms Gamble could have done more or taken further steps, however, given the effects of the unforeseen and unforeseeable dust devil, had she done so, that would sadly have made no difference to the ultimate outcome," the magistrate said. The six children killed in the accident - Addison Stewart, Zane Mellor, Jye Sheehan, Jalailah Jayne-Maree Jones, Peter Dodt and Chace Harrison - were aged between 11 and 12. They were all at a Hillcrest Primary School fair when the accident took place on the last day of term before the school holidays in December 2021. Five of the children were on the castle when the gales swept it up and flung it across the school oval. The sixth child, who was waiting in line, died after being struck in the head by the inflatable blower. The tragic accident shattered Devonport, a city on the north coast of Tasmania with some 30,000 residents. Ms Gamble was charged nearly two years after, in November 2023. Andrew Dodt, the father of one of the young victims Peter, said after Friday's verdict that "our hopes are just shattered now". "At the end of the day all I wanted was an apology for my son not coming home, and I'm never going to get it, and that kills me," he said in a statement to local media. "I've been broken for a long time, and I think I'm going to be broken for a lot more." Ms Gamble's lawyer Bethan Frake spoke on her behalf, acknowledging that the incident has caused "scars that will remain for an extremely long time, likely forever". "I am a mother," she said, quoting Ms Gamble. "I can only imagine the pain that other parents are living with each and every day because of this terrible thing that happened."
