Dzulkefly: Celebrities sang without charge at Health Ministry's Raya event

Malay Mail24-04-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 — Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad has clarified that no payment was made to several high-profile entertainers who performed at the Health Ministry's Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration on Tuesday.
In a brief statement addressing public curiosity about the event's expenses today, Dzulkefly said the performances by Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin, Norsyarmilla Jirin (popularly known as Mila AF), and Datuk Jamal Abdillah were done voluntarily, in conjunction with the attendance of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and ministry staff.
'Tok Ti (Siti Nurhaliza) attended as a guest representative of Yayasan Nurjiwa. Mila AF also did not charge a fee,' he said, confirming that Siti Nurhaliza herself had stated she was not paid for the performance.
As for veteran crooner Jamal Abdillah, the Kuala Selangor MP added that the singer and actor received only 'a token of appreciation'.
Previously, Jamal reportedly said he had agreed to perform at the event after receiving an invitation from the ministry secretary-general, who is a personal acquaintance.
Earlier today, Siti took to Instagram Stories to clarify that she was not paid to perform at the Health Ministry's Hari Raya open house on Tuesday, saying she was there purely as a guest.
'I sang to show appreciation to MOH staff — out of goodwill, and without payment,' she wrote.
The 'Aku Bidadari Syurgamu' singer said she felt compelled to speak up as her name was being dragged into an online storm.
'I don't want more people fuelling the fire just because my name was mentioned in reports about the event.
'As I said, I didn't ask for any payment. I attended as a guest and sang voluntarily.
'This clarification matters — don't use my name or image in news that isn't accurate,' she added.
The event drew heavy backlash from the healthcare fraternity, netizens and politicians alike.
According to The Star, many criticised the inclusion of high-profile celebrities, arguing it stood in stark contrast to the ongoing struggles faced by healthcare workers.
Pressure group Hartal Doktor Kontrak also slammed the ministry's leadership, accusing them of being out of touch.
'The Health Ministry staff are happy, even though their on-call or overtime allowance is very low, claims get rejected all the time, equipment cannot be purchased due to the lack of allocations, but at least the ministry's top management can have fun with famous artistes,' the group wrote in a Facebook post.

HAWANA 2025 bolsters media's role in promoting information literacy

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebration, which kicks off today for a three-day run, serves as a platform to bolster the media's role in promoting information literacy, while also strengthening public engagement through a range of educational, entertainment and interactive activities. Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (Telecommunication Infrastructure) Mano Verabathran said HAWANA is not just a platform to recognise media practitioners for delivering accurate information, but also affirms the media's role as a public education agent in an era of information overload. 'We need to educate the public on various issues related to media and information dissemination, including the importance of media literacy, fact-checking, and the dangers of spreading false information which could affect social harmony and national security,' he said when launching the HAWANA 2025 Carnival at Sunway Putra Mall here. Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and its editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also HAWANA 2025 project director. Mano said that since its inception in 2018, HAWANA has stood as a symbol of recognition for the vital role journalists play in shaping public opinion, defending freedom of expression, and articulating the aspirations of society. 'I would like to extend my congratulations to the organisers, particularly the Communications Ministry and Bernama, for their continued commitment to empowering journalism in Malaysia through inclusive and innovative approaches,' he said. Additionally, Mano said Bernama's fact-checking desk (MyCheck Malaysia) is an independent initiative by the news agency to educate the public on media literacy, with a focus on issues that impact people's lives and livelihoods. 'More than 400 fact-checking reports have been produced since 2020 and can be read at MyCheck reports are also published on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok,' he said. The three-day HAWANA 2025 Carnival features activities such as casual talks with agencies, quizzes, performances by invited artistes, colouring sessions, meet & greet events, as well as forums and workshops on creative writing, photography, podcasting, and media literacy, targeting teenagers and senior citizens. At the media interactive zone, visitors can experience the world of broadcasting through booths by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Media Prima Berhad, Astro and TV AlHijrah, as well as live crossovers via the HAWANA Mini Studio by Bernama TV, the 'Breaking News' interactive game by Bernama Radio, and the 'Kempen Internet Selamat' exhibition by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The exhibition and interactive booths also showcase digital broadcasting technology by the New Straits Times Press (NSTP) group, photo book sales, and media archives. The carnival is also joined by government agencies such as the Information Department and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), along with stalls run by young entrepreneurs and a community market involving media cooperatives, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and journalist alumni. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to launch the main event of HAWANA 2025 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) tomorrow.

Zhang Yaodong expresses gratitude for support over being a stallholder in SG

Zhang Yaodong formally introduced his stall in his first-ever TikTok, after he was spotted manning the stall in early June. Photos: Zhang Yaodong/TikTok, Xiaohongshu More than a week after Zhang Yaodong was spotted manning a steamed food stall in the Tampines industrial area, the Singapore-based Malaysian actor took to TikTok on June 11 to express his gratitude to his friends and supporters. The 47-year-old filmed it within the vicinity of his stall, starting the video by briefly panning over the signboard to show its offerings. Tagging the location as a coffeeshop at Blk 9012 Tampines Street 93, the former Mediacorp artiste formally introduced his stall in his first-ever TikTok. He wrote in the caption: 'A new beginning. Thank you for being part of it. That day at the stall was a wake-up call. Your kindness gave me strength to reflect and figure out my next steps. The road ahead is mine to walk — and it's a path I've chosen for myself. I'll be sharing this journey with you.' In early June, a social media user posted the first sighting of Zhang standing in front of the cash register and appearing to be taking orders from customers. Amid the hustle and bustle, the user noted that he was polite and humble, and he was working that day because his employee had resigned. On March 18, a Facebook post by the Tampines Small and Medium Enterprises Association (TSMEA) indicated that Zhang's stall was newly opened during that period and serves traditonal steamed dishes like egg, meat, fish and prawns. Zhang said in his video: 'I know there were many friends, even loyal customers, who took pictures of me helping out here last week. I am very grateful for all the encouragement I've received on social media. 'I would like to take the opportunity to thank the people by my side who have been silently supporting me, as well as the friends who have come over after seeing the reports.' He also credited his long-time friend Catherine Chew for encouraging him to create a TikTok account. 'I'm touched by her sincerity, as well as her eagerness for the public to see another side of me. She has also introduced me to several bosses, who want to collaborate with me on TikTok in the future.' The bachelor's image took a hit in July 2024 when rumours surfaced about him fathering children out of wedlock with women of different nationalities. In November 2024, Zhang took to Instagram to commemorate his holiday to South Korea with his two daughters, confirming his fatherhood for the first time. In February, Mediacorp's talent management agency The Celebrity Agency stated it was no longer representing him and he has not participated in the filming of any new shows. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
