HAWANA 2025 bolsters media's role in promoting information literacy
Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (Telecommunication Infrastructure) Mano Verabathran said HAWANA is not just a platform to recognise media practitioners for delivering accurate information, but also affirms the media's role as a public education agent in an era of information overload.
'We need to educate the public on various issues related to media and information dissemination, including the importance of media literacy, fact-checking, and the dangers of spreading false information which could affect social harmony and national security,' he said when launching the HAWANA 2025 Carnival at Sunway Putra Mall here.
Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and its editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also HAWANA 2025 project director.
Mano said that since its inception in 2018, HAWANA has stood as a symbol of recognition for the vital role journalists play in shaping public opinion, defending freedom of expression, and articulating the aspirations of society.
'I would like to extend my congratulations to the organisers, particularly the Communications Ministry and Bernama, for their continued commitment to empowering journalism in Malaysia through inclusive and innovative approaches,' he said.
Additionally, Mano said Bernama's fact-checking desk (MyCheck Malaysia) is an independent initiative by the news agency to educate the public on media literacy, with a focus on issues that impact people's lives and livelihoods.
'More than 400 fact-checking reports have been produced since 2020 and can be read at www.mycheck.my. MyCheck reports are also published on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok,' he said.
The three-day HAWANA 2025 Carnival features activities such as casual talks with agencies, quizzes, performances by invited artistes, colouring sessions, meet & greet events, as well as forums and workshops on creative writing, photography, podcasting, and media literacy, targeting teenagers and senior citizens.
At the media interactive zone, visitors can experience the world of broadcasting through booths by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Media Prima Berhad, Astro and TV AlHijrah, as well as live crossovers via the HAWANA Mini Studio by Bernama TV, the 'Breaking News' interactive game by Bernama Radio, and the 'Kempen Internet Selamat' exhibition by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
The exhibition and interactive booths also showcase digital broadcasting technology by the New Straits Times Press (NSTP) group, photo book sales, and media archives.
The carnival is also joined by government agencies such as the Information Department and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), along with stalls run by young entrepreneurs and a community market involving media cooperatives, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and journalist alumni.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to launch the main event of HAWANA 2025 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) tomorrow.

That line meant something to me back then, but now, as an adult who knows what it's like to keep going even when it's hard, it hits deeper. It reminds me that life doesn't always give you what you want, even when you try your best. We grow up thinking that we will get everything if we work hard enough, but sometimes, things just don't go that way. Yet, we keep going. We show up. We survive. And honestly, that's powerful. Ever wonder why some people seem to get everything they want? Here is the honest truth: it's not magic, and it's definitely not luck – it's effort. The good stuff in life, the things that really matter, usually take time, patience, and a whole lot of showing up when you would rather not. It is not always easy, but it's possible, and most definitely worth it. Ever catch yourself wishing things were just easy, without all the hard work and struggle? A lot of people feel that way, and usually there's a reason behind it. Sometimes, it's because they have tried putting in effort before but it didn't see any payoff – so why bother trying again? For example, if you spend all week working late to get a project just right, but your boss only points out the little things that you missed instead of saying thanks – you're probably not going to go that extra mile again, because it starts to feel like no one really sees all the efforts that you put in. People want to put in the work when they believe it's actually going to pay off. If not, they learn the hard way that going that extra mile just feels like wasted time, so they start doing the bare minimum instead. For me, the reason I often stick to the easy, familiar path without even trying something new is fear. Fear that taking a risk might backfire and leave me worse off. Working hard isn't just about effort – it's a whole process. It takes dedication, perseverance, and genuine interest. It's something you want to put your full energy into because it matters to you. But sometimes, choosing the easy way feels like the only option, especially when opportunities are scarce and there's no real support for the ideas that I care about. I often find myself stuck between doing what's 'right' and what's easy. And honestly? What I get with little effort often feels good enough. Still, I wonder – am I okay with spending years doing the same thing, or do I want to risk that comfort and stability to chase something bigger? Something that might bring more satisfaction, but with no guarantee. I hope those who aim for greatness find it. But at times I ask myself, am I one of them? Is settling for less really such a bad thing? When people say 'never settle for less', I don't think they mean that you have to be satisfied with whatever life throws at you. I believe it means honouring yourself by making choices that truly reflect what you want – choices that don't make you feel small or ashamed. Because, at the end of the day, you're the one who has to live with the decisions that you make. The truth is, you can get what you want in life, but the real challenge is doing it without dimming your light or forgetting who you are. It starts with being honest about what you actually want, not what looks impressive, and not what other people expect. What you genuinely want deep down. That's your direction. Then comes the harder part – staying true to yourself on the way there. You will be tempted to say yes when you mean no, or shrink to fit in. If you want to get anything in life without losing yourself, here's what I like to tell myself: Stick to your values. If you have to betray your peace and dignity to win, it's not really a win. Keep your integrity. Do things in a way that you will be proud of later. Put in the work. Wanting is easy, but doing the daily, often boring stuff, with heart, that's where the magic happens. You don't have to lose yourself to get what you want. When you stay true to who you are, the right things start to find their way in. Possibility shows up – not all at once, but quietly, step by step. #SHOWBIZ: Siti, Dayang, Aina and Ernie top AIM24 nominations
KUALA LUMPUR: Biduanita Negara Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, Dayang Nurfaizah, Aina Abdul and Ernie Zakri are "leaders of the pack" amongst the top five nominees for Anugerah Industri Muzik 24's (AIM 24) 26 categories. They have six to nine nominations each, in five to eight categories. AIM 24 which is supported by the Communications Ministry and organised by the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) will be held at 8.30pm on Sept 13 at the Arena of Stars in Resorts World Genting. At a press conference held at Premiera Hotel in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman yesterday, RIM chairman and AIM24 organising chairman Rosmin Hashim announced that a total of 130 finalists were shortlisted for the 26 categories. "The selection of the five finalists in each category were made by a panel of professional jurors, with the scoring fully audited by certified audit firm Mazars. "The judging process was administered by an independent body, Macomm Management Services Sdn Bhd," he said. The Best Album winner will receive RM200,000 while the Best New Artiste, Best Ethnic Song, Best Nasyid Song, Best Traditional Song, Best Unity Song, Best Local English Song, Best Local Chinese Song, Best Local Indian Song, Best Song and Best Music Video will each receive RM50,000. Winners of 11 selected categories will stand to receive a share of RM700,000 in Creative Content Funds from the Ministry of Communications via MyCreative Ventures (MyCV). Rosmin said that earlier this year, RIM received a total of 682 nominations covering recordings released during the eligibility period of July 1, 2022 to Dec 31, 2024. "The first phase of judging for the Best Song Recording and Best Album Recording categories took place at Timeless Studio on July 14 and 15, followed by the remaining categories at Hotel Majestic Kuala Lumpur from July 21 to 23. "The Best Song judging was held at Timeless Studio on July 29," he said. The judging panel comprises highly qualified local music industry professionals, including composers, lyricists, musicians, singers, producers, arrangers, vocal coaches and video directors. The judging panel is headed by renowned music director Datuk Mokhzani Ismail. The event will be broadcast live on TV2 and RTM Klik. Rosmin said: "Six categories will be announced during the Pre-Awards Ceremony on Sept 12 namely Best Single/Album Cover, Best Album Recording, Best Song Recording, Best Musical Arrangement in a Song, Most Streamed Song and Most Viewed Official Music Video on YouTube. "The remaining 24 major categories will be announced during the awards show." The press conference was also attended by Broadcasting director-general Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman and Communications Ministry senior principal assistant secretary Noreen Iszani Yusak and some of the artistes, composers and lyricists nominated for awards.
