WITH the rock band 'My Chemical Romance' finally returning to Malaysia next year, I have been deep in their live performances online.
As a long-time fan, I don't scroll past – I watch everything.
And out of all the songs that I have locked since I was a teen, the recent performances of 'Famous Last Words' really stuck with me.
Hearing thousands of people scream: 'I am not afraid to keep on living, I am not afraid to walk this world alone', gave me chills.
That line meant something to me back then, but now, as an adult who knows what it's like to keep going even when it's hard, it hits deeper.
It reminds me that life doesn't always give you what you want, even when you try your best.
We grow up thinking that we will get everything if we work hard enough, but sometimes, things just don't go that way.
Yet, we keep going. We show up. We survive. And honestly, that's powerful.
Ever wonder why some people seem to get everything they want?
Here is the honest truth: it's not magic, and it's definitely not luck – it's effort.
The good stuff in life, the things that really matter, usually take time, patience, and a whole lot of showing up when you would rather not.
It is not always easy, but it's possible, and most definitely worth it.
Ever catch yourself wishing things were just easy, without all the hard work and struggle?
A lot of people feel that way, and usually there's a reason behind it.
Sometimes, it's because they have tried putting in effort before but it didn't see any payoff – so why bother trying again?
For example, if you spend all week working late to get a project just right, but your boss only points out the little things that you missed instead of saying thanks – you're probably not going to go that extra mile again, because it starts to feel like no one really sees all the efforts that you put in.
People want to put in the work when they believe it's actually going to pay off.
If not, they learn the hard way that going that extra mile just feels like wasted time, so they start doing the bare minimum instead.
For me, the reason I often stick to the easy, familiar path without even trying something new is fear.
Fear that taking a risk might backfire and leave me worse off.
Working hard isn't just about effort – it's a whole process.
It takes dedication, perseverance, and genuine interest.
It's something you want to put your full energy into because it matters to you.
But sometimes, choosing the easy way feels like the only option, especially when opportunities are scarce and there's no real support for the ideas that I care about.
I often find myself stuck between doing what's 'right' and what's easy.
And honestly? What I get with little effort often feels good enough.
Still, I wonder – am I okay with spending years doing the same thing, or do I want to risk that comfort and stability to chase something bigger?
Something that might bring more satisfaction, but with no guarantee.
I hope those who aim for greatness find it.
But at times I ask myself, am I one of them? Is settling for less really such a bad thing?
When people say 'never settle for less', I don't think they mean that you have to be satisfied with whatever life throws at you.
I believe it means honouring yourself by making choices that truly reflect what you want – choices that don't make you feel small or ashamed.
Because, at the end of the day, you're the one who has to live with the decisions that you make.
The truth is, you can get what you want in life, but the real challenge is doing it without dimming your light or forgetting who you are.
It starts with being honest about what you actually want, not what looks impressive, and not what other people expect.
What you genuinely want deep down. That's your direction.
Then comes the harder part – staying true to yourself on the way there.
You will be tempted to say yes when you mean no, or shrink to fit in.
If you want to get anything in life without losing yourself, here's what I like to tell myself:
Stick to your values. If you have to betray your peace and dignity to win, it's not really a win.
Keep your integrity. Do things in a way that you will be proud of later.
Put in the work. Wanting is easy, but doing the daily, often boring stuff, with heart, that's where the magic happens.
You don't have to lose yourself to get what you want. When you stay true to who you are, the right things start to find their way in.
Possibility shows up – not all at once, but quietly, step by step.
Just as My Chemical Romance says: 'We'll carry on, we'll carry on' – just keep showing up as you.

5 fun things you didn't know about Wednesday star, Jenna Ortega

Jenna Ortega has captivated audiences worldwide with her sharp wit, haunting stares, and unforgettable performance as the iconic Wednesday Addams in Netflix's hit supernatural mystery comedy series, Wednesday. While her role as the gothic detective earned her global fame, there is far more to this rising star than meets the eye. With the return of Wednesday in the second season which promises even more mayhem, monsters, and mystery at Nevermore Academy, it is the perfect time to pull back the curtain on Ortega's off-screen life. From her early career beginnings to surprising personal quirks and creative passions, here are some little-known facts about the actress who made morbidity cool again. Photo: Mother of Jenna Ortega's Facebook page. How did the casting agency discover Ortega? Jenna Ortega's journey to stardom began in the most unexpected way — through a Facebook video her mother uploaded as a joke. At just seven years old, Ortega performed a dramatic monologue from a book her mother had given her to redirect her constant talk about becoming an actress. Though initially hesitant about her daughter entering the entertainment industry, Ortega's mother filmed the performance and shared it privately with friends on Facebook, simply to show off her daughter's theatrical flair. That video, however, caught the eye of a casting agent who saw real talent in the young performer. Can Jenna Ortega carry a tune like she carries a scene? Though she is no stranger to musical roles from her Disney Channel days, Jenna Ortega does not consider herself a singer. When asked in an interview with whether she can sing, she replied honestly: 'Poorly.' While she has sung for acting roles before and does not mind doing it when required, she has made it clear that she has no plans to pursue singing as a career. Interestingly, Ortega added that she would rather become a musical composer someday, which allows her to express herself through music. Photo: Jenna Ortega's Instagram account. Can Jenna Ortega actually play the cello? Yes, that haunting cello music you hear in Wednesday is not just acting. Jenna Ortega actually learned to play the cello for the role, revealing in an interview that she began practising the instrument about two months before filming started. While she admits she may be a bit rusty now, Ortega has expressed genuine interest in continuing to learn. What started as a skill for a role may just become a long-term passion. Did Jenna Ortega really audition for Wednesday covered in blood? Jenna Ortega auditioned for the role while still drenched in fake blood. Fresh off a long night of filming a gory scene for the horror film X, Ortega jumped onto a Zoom call with Wednesday producer Tim Burton without removing the stage make-up. She was running on no sleep, had glycerine sweat in her hair, a fake gash across her face, and stage blood dripping down — but instead of being horrified, Burton laughed. The bold, unintentional entrance may have just sealed the deal, perfectly capturing the dark humour and grit of the character she was about to take on. How is Jenna Ortega using her influence beyond the screen? Jenna Ortega is not just known for her on-screen roles — she is also an outspoken activist with a personal mission. In honour of her grandfather, who passed away from AIDS before she was born, Ortega proudly serves as an ambassador for UNAIDS, the United Nations programme dedicated to fighting the disease and its stigma. At just 15, she gave a powerful speech at WE Day in 2017, urging people to talk openly about AIDS and normalise conversations around it.

Meniti Cakerawala 2.0 finale on Kuching Fest stage tomorrow

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Threads WhatsApp Telegram KUCHING (Aug 16): The curtain will fall on the Kuching Festival 2025 this Sunday with a performance described as 'truly extraordinary' – Meniti Cakerawala 2.0, a fusion of science, storytelling, and the performing arts. Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng announced today that the festival's finale will take place at 7.45pm on August 17 at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Theatre, Kuching Park. The admission is free, but seats will be on a first-come, first-served basis. 'This is not just a performance – it is an experience. 'It is science meeting art, fact meeting beauty, and knowledge meeting emotion,' Wee said at a press conference at MBKS headquarters today, urging the public to arrive early to enjoy the festival grounds one last time before the show. He shared that the production features two of Malaysia's most celebrated figures – the nation's first astrophysicist, Tan Sri Mazlan Othman, and internationally renowned dance legend Datuk Ramli Ibrahim. Ramli's choreography, performed by dancers from the Sutra Foundation, will transform the stage into a living constellation, each movement reflecting the elegance and mystery of the universe. Mazlan's narration will guide audiences through a cosmic journey – weaving astronomy, space exploration, music, poetry, and dance into a story that connects humanity to the stars. Part of the Malaysia Tour 2025, the show has been staged in cities including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Kota Kinabalu. Its international prestige is underscored by the fact that an eight-minute excerpt was featured at New York's Lincoln Centre during the 35th New York Dance Festival. 'For Malaysia to be represented on such a stage is a point of pride, and for Kuching to host the full performance is truly special,' he said. He also noted that the Kuching staging is made possible through a special collaboration with Delphic Malaysia, a partnership formed specifically for the Kuching Festival edition of the show. Wee reflected on the success of this year's Kuching Festival, which began on July 25, attracting thousands with its food stalls, cultural performances, and family activities. 'I see this as more than just entertainment. 'This performance speaks to the values we hold dear – curiosity, creativity, and connection. 'It is about seeing the bigger picture of our shared humanity, just as we see ourselves as part of a greater universe. 'I hope this finale will not only close our festival with beauty and inspiration but will also spark a new appreciation for the power of art and science to unite us,' he said. Also present at the press conference were Deputy Mayor and Kuching Festival Main Organising Committee Chairman, Dato Dr Zaiedi Suhaili, Deputy Chairman Cr Chai Ju Loon and Delphi Malaysia president Victoria Fong.
