Mehfil building collapse: UT report holds lessee, owner responsible

Chandigarh: The
fact-finding inquiry report
of the
Chandigarh administration
found both the lessee and owner of the Mehfil building in Sector 17 responsible for its collapse. In his detailed inquiry, the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of the Chandigarh administration's central division found that despite knowing that the
structural stability certificate
had not been procured, they renovated and altered the structure, ignoring the possible risks.
Now, the Chandigarh administration is going to send this detailed fact-finding report to the Chandigarh Police for investigations and suitable action as per the findings of the report. Sources said that the role of the architect of the building, contractor, and other technical people is also under question. These aspects will be probed by the Chandigarh Police from a criminal angle.
The detailed fact-finding report, which was submitted to the UT deputy commissioner, revealed that no safety measures had been taken even during repair work of the building. Moreover, no revised building plans had been passed by the estate office, and an objection was already placed. However, the lessee and owner ignored this and initiated renovation work.

"This fact-finding inquiry into the collapse of the building, SCO No.183-185, Sector 17, Chandigarh, on Jan 6, 2025, is based on multiple aspects, keeping required records, documents, rules, and regulations in mind. Since the entire case is largely related to the building structures, structural strength, safety, and events which led to the collapse, all the related norms, permissions, and sequences of renovation or repair were also kept in mind while inquiring into the matter. All the concerned papers and documents of the building were minutely checked during the inquiry," sources in the UT administration said.

Delhi police recover counterfeit currency racket operating from bangladesh through bihar
New Delhi: In the first seizure of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) this year, Delhi Police Special Cell recovered counterfeit notes with a face value of Rs 4 lakh. The high-quality fake notes, all in Rs 500 denomination, were smuggled into Delhi via Bangladesh. The courier was traced to Datia in Bihar. The accused was identified as Naushad Alam (22), a resident of Bettiah, Bihar. Additional CP (Special Cell) Pramod Kushwaha said that the unit worked on FICN-related intelligence for the past four months. "We had credible information that an interstate syndicate was involved in the circulation of fake currency across various states, including Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR)," he said. During surveillance, it was discovered that counterfeit currency was smuggled into India through the porous Indo-Bangladesh border. Alam was finally apprehended near the Vijay Ghat Bus Stand while attempting to deliver a large consignment of fake currency to a contact of one of his associates. "He revealed that he used to procure fake currency at the rate of Rs 200 per Rs 500 note from his sources and sold it to his contacts for Rs 300 per note. He already delivered 4–5 consignments of FICN to various contacts in Bihar, Delhi, and NCR," Kaushik added. During the investigation, it was revealed that several Bangladesh-based operatives were involved in pumping counterfeit currency into India through border routes. Police suspect that a significant portion of the profits from this racket is used to purchase sophisticated weapons. Police said Alam, driven by financial hardship, was lured into the racket by a man who convinced him to work as a courier. GPS trackers must in school buses, background checks on drivers soon
1 2 Nagpur: In a bid to tighten safety protocols for school transport, the state education department has issued a government resolution (GR) mandating alcohol and drug testing for bus drivers, cleaners, and female attendants. The resolution also directs schools to ensure that only authorised personnel are allowed inside student transport vehicles. The GR outlines new and revised safety norms ahead of the academic session, including mandatory background checks of school bus drivers with a focus on their accident history and driving record. It also makes GPS installation in buses and safety training for transport staff compulsory. A key provision in the GR relates to students using private transport such as vans and autos. "Parents must inform the school about the driver's verification and identity details. They should also maintain personal information about the drivers for their own security," the resolution states.
