SCZone Reopens Abbas Wharf After EGP 1.8 Billion Upgrade
The upgraded West Port Said terminal is part of a wider push to boost logistics capacity and grain handling infrastructure.

The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) has reopened Abbas Wharf at West Port Said following a EGP 1.8 billion development project.
Announced by SCZone Chairman Waleid Gamal El-Dien, the revamped terminal is set to support key projects already in motion at the port, including new terminals for dry bulk grain and liquid cargo. The expansion is designed to improve port handling efficiency and attract further investment to the economic zone.
The development falls within the state's Vision 2030 framework, which positions maritime infrastructure as a core driver of industrial growth and trade competitiveness. Gamal El-Dien noted that the upgraded wharf will not only improve logistics operations in West Port Said but also support long-term plans to expand food security and industrial storage capacity.
The upgrade is part of Egypt's broader strategy to modernise logistics and strengthen port infrastructure across the country. Work on the terminal also reflects ongoing efforts to localise supply chains and create jobs, as the SCZone continues to position itself as a hub for regional trade and transit.

Foreign Ministry: Maintaining the Stability of Navigation Lanes is an Urgent Necessity
Amir Hagag Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, stressed the need to maintain the stability of international navigation lanes and enhance regional cooperation among the countries bordering the Red Sea to preserve the security of the Red Sea and ensure freedom of international navigation. During his meeting with Annette Weber, the European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, on the sidelines of his participation in the Oslo Forum, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that any threat to the security of the Red Sea directly impacts the global economy, especially in light of the growing challenges facing the region. Minister Abdel Aty reviewed Egypt's vision regarding developments in the Horn of Africa and was keen to learn about the European Union Special Representative's assessment of the latest developments in the Sudanese crisis. He emphasized the need to spare the lives of Sudanese, alleviate their suffering, and preserve the capabilities, unity, and institutions of the Sudanese state. He also reviewed Egypt's efforts aimed at resolving the crisis as quickly as possible and Egypt's keenness to participate in various mediation and settlement efforts. Saudi to Allocate 2.5 Million Airline Seats for Umrah by End of 2025
Routes from Europe, including Paris, Lyon and London, are part of a wider strategy to improve access to Madinah and Jeddah. Saudi Arabia has announced plans to allocate a total of 2.5 million airline seats for Umrah pilgrims by the end of 2025, with over 700,000 seats already utilised during the first quarter of the year. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance air connectivity to the Kingdom's key pilgrimage cities, including Madinah and Jeddah, and to streamline travel for visitors from across the globe. The expansion was unveiled during the Umrah and Ziyarah Forum, held in Madinah from April 14th to the 16th, which brought together 150 exhibitors representing over 100 countries. The event focused on infrastructure, travel technologies, and Madinah's historical significance. So far in 2025, 12 airlines have joined the Kingdom's air connectivity programme, introducing 20 new international routes and adding 1.5 million seats to the network. Participating carriers include ITA Airways, British Airways, Wizz Air, and Eurowings. Several of the new connections focus on Europe. Germany's Stuttgart has been added to the growing list of cities with direct flights to Jeddah, alongside Berlin and Cologne. Transavia, the France-based carrier, will soon operate flights from Paris and Lyon. In the United Kingdom, daily flights from London's Gatwick Airport to Madinah are scheduled to begin in August, contributing 180,000 seats to the Umrah travel system. The expansion reflects Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to facilitate religious tourism and improve access to holy sites as part of Vision 2030, which seeks to increase the number of annual Umrah visitors to 30 million.
