Bilbao's Alvarez provisionally suspended after failed doping test
BILBAO : Athletic Bilbao's Yeray Alvarez has been provisionally suspended due to a failed doping test after a Europa League game against Manchester United, with the defender saying he unintentionally ingested a banned substance in medicine used to treat hair loss.
Alvarez said he had tested positive after Bilbao's 3-0 home defeat in the semi-finals of Uefa's second-tier club competition in May.
The Spanish side also lost the return leg 4-1.
The 30-year-old centreback was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2016 and said he had been taking the medicine as part of his treatment for alopecia.
'After studying the case, we have established that I tested positive because I unintentionally took a hair loss prevention medicine containing a banned substance,' Alvarez said in a social media post yesterday.
'The disciplinary procedure is currently under investigation and subject to confidentiality, so I am provisionally suspended and am not authorised to make any further public statements.
'I would like to say to all of you that I very much regret this situation but, with the support of the club, I am working on my defence in the belief that I will be able to return to the field of play as soon as possible.'
Uefa said they would not comment on the case until a final disciplinary decision had been made.
Bilbao threw their full support behind Alvarez, who came through the club's youth academy and has made 257 appearances in all competitions for the senior team.

However, Malaga mayor Francisco de la Torre said hosting matches could cause problems for the city's club and fans because of reconstruction work needed on the stadium. 'Choosing between the World Cup and the club, we choose the club and the fans,' said De la Torre after a meeting with the Malaga council and the regional government of Andalusia. 'After (several) meetings… we believe that the most responsible, prudent and sensible thing to do today is to abandon Malaga's World Cup (hosting). 'If the World Cup is a risk for the club and a problem for the fans, it's not worth continuing with.' Malaga would have to play at a 12,500-capacity alternative stadium while reconstruction on La Rosaleda took place, and they currently have over 26,000 season ticket holders. The works would have cost an estimated €270 million (US$316 million) but the mayor said the decision had not been made in order to cut costs. 'We want there to be a new stadium. It will not be for the World Cup but there will be, that's a firm commitment,' added De la Torre. 'We're not doing this to save money but because it's for the best for the city, the fans and the club.' Spanish second division club Malaga competed in the Champions League in 2013 but subsequently dropped as low as the third tier amid a financial crisis. In March, Spain's head of World Cup 2030 organisation Maria Tato resigned after being accused of fixing the process to decide which stadiums would host matches. Newspaper El Mundo said ratings for potential venues were altered to favour Anoeta in San Sebastian, at the expense of Balaidos in Vigo. The Galician city, as well as the east coast city Valencia, are options to replace Malaga as a host. In June, La Liga club Valencia completed financing for the Nou Mestalla stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2027 with a 70,000 capacity.

Belgian ex-Olympic gymnastics champion Derwael retires
BRUSSEL, July 16 — Belgium's former Olympic uneven bars champion Nina Derwael said yesterday she was retiring from gymnastics at the age of 25, having 'achieved her goals' in the sport. Derwael became the first Belgian women's gymnast to win an Olympic medal four years ago in Tokyo, taking gold after twice being crowned world champion in the uneven bars. 'If I still wanted to play a significant role at world championships or Olympics, I would have to put my body under even greater and more prolonged pressure, a risk I no longer want to take,' she said in a statement from her agency. Derwael is a three-time European champion in the uneven bars and also won gold on the balance beam in Leipzig this year. Atletico Madrid agree deal for Argentina international Almada
PARIS, July — Spanish football club Atletico Madrid announced yesterday an agreement with Brazilian outfit Botafogo to sign 2022 World Cup winner Thiago Almada. 'Our club and the Brazilian side have reached an agreement, pending confirmation once the player passes the required medical examination and signs the contract,' the La Liga outfit posted on social media. The 24-year-old Argentinian spent the second half of last season on loan at Lyon, where he scored two goals and laid on five assists in 20 appearances in all competitions for the French club. Almada has 10 caps for his country and was part of their World Cup-winning squad in Qatar. He also represented Argentina in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The right-footed attacking midfielder came through the ranks at local side Velez Sarsfield, where he made his professional debut in 2018 at the age of 17. He joined MLS side Atlanta in 2022, being voted best rookie in the league after his first season. Almada's form earned him a move to Botafogo last summer. He made 26 appearances for the Rio de Janeiro-based club, winning the Brazilian league and Copa Libertadores, before heading off on loan to Lyon in January. — AFP
