Lakers' Luka Doncic shows off summer shred in Men's Health

Japan Times5 days ago
After plenty of attention was brought to Luka Doncic's fitness level following his shocking February trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, the five-time All-Star has been putting another surprise together this offseason.
After reports of an improved physique surfaced earlier this summer, a profile in Men's Health magazine confirmed the extent to which Doncic has gone to develop a slimmed-down look as he prepares for his first full season in L.A.
Doncic, 26, has generally been listed at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds, although opinions on the weight have varied. It did not prohibit him from scoring 28.2 points with 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists last season.
But reports indicated this past winter that the Dallas Mavericks had become exasperated with Doncic's lack of fitness, which might have contributed to a calf injury that the star guard had been rehabbing for a month prior to the trade that shocked the NBA.
Ankle, calf, knee and back injuries have slowed Doncic at certain times in his career, although he still managed to play at least 61 games in a season until he was reduced to 50 last year with the Mavericks and Lakers combined.
Now, Doncic is visibly slimmer after an improved diet combined with a fitness program. He has been avoiding gluten and keeping sugar to a minimum, while loading up on protein to help him get through multiple workouts a day that include lifting weights along with on-court drills.
"Obviously, be the best that I can be, take care of myself," Doncic said to Men's Health. "This year, with my team, I think we did a huge step. But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can't stop."
While LeBron James exercised a contract option to return to the Lakers in 2025-26, the team also added center Deandre Ayton, guard Marcus Smart and forward Jake LaRavia.
The profile did not mention Doncic's current weight, but photographs showed off his slim look with greater muscle definition in his arms. His workouts kept him away from basketball at first, then had him return to the court in June. He will play for Slovenia in EuroBasket in August.
"So every summer I try my best to work on different things," he said. "Obviously, I'm very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better."

Pitcher Darvish Yu commemorated for 204 Japan, MLB combined wins

Japanese pitcher Darvish Yu of the San Diego Padres has been commemorated for his 204 combined wins in Japanese professional baseball and Major League Baseball. A ceremony marking his feat was held at Petco Park in San Diego on Friday. The 38-year-old pitcher recorded his first win of this season in Wednesday's game against the New York Mets. That was his 204th career victory that broke the tie with Kuroda Hiroki, who pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. Video footage highlighting Darvish's career from his debut with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan to his 204th win was shown on the stadium screen. The crowd cheered when he appeared on the field. Darvish was presented with a commemorative frame containing the uniform he wore in Wednesday's game and that day's lineup. Darvish was photographed with Padres officials and former MLB pitcher Nomo Hideo, who won 201 combined wins. Nomo is now a Padres advisor. After Wednesday's game, Darvish said he is really grateful to Nomo for always being truthful and giving him a lot of advice, even to details.

Basketball: NBA Summer League experience motivates B-League players

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Having set a target of sending at least five players to the NBA by 2030, Japan's B-League recently put some of its best young basketball talent to the test on the sidelines of the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The B-League United select team played four scrimmages in July against teams taking part in the NBA Summer League, comprising mostly youngsters and fringe players competing for NBA roster spots. Although B-League United went winless against the Toronto Raptors, Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers between July 9 and 14, the Japanese players gained motivation to raise their levels. "I realized that the standards I had set for myself until now were very low," said Nagoya Diamond Dolphins swingman Keita Imamura, who has played for Japan's national team. "I have to raise those standards myself." The Las Vegas tour coincided with national team activities, so B-League United was unable to field its strongest possible roster. In addition, it was difficult to call up foreign players of the B-League during the offseason. While pointing out some issues, B-League executive officer Naoya Okamoto, who helped bring the tour to fruition, said, "The players grew (through playing against the NBA teams). We played all four games properly, so that's really good." "We still need to think harder about how to absorb costs and achieve a situation that benefits everyone."
