Over 1,500 artisans in Kolhapur get busy making PoP Ganapati idols as HC lifts ban two months before Ganeshotsav
With just over two months left for Ganeshotsav, artisans are already getting busy moulding PoP Ganapati idols. Many makers believe that the HC order will boost demand for PoP Ganesh idols this year.
Kiran Majgaonkar, head of the Kolhapur Zilla Murtikar Sanghatana, said, "State govt's position was that sculptors should be allowed to make PoP idols. HC's green light to these idols has brought relief to all Ganesh idol makers.
It will benefit all sculptors as well as devotees. Although there is less time now, since Ganesh Chaturthi is on Aug 27, the process of making Ganesh idols will speed up."
He estimated that there are at least 1,500 idol-making artisan families across the Zilla Parishad (ZP) areas engaged in this craft.
Another artisan, Murli Majgaonkar, said, "Clay idols are heavy as well as costly, which is why people demand PoP idols.

There are limitations in the availability of good quality clay. The ban's lifting will increase demand for PoP idols this year as in Kolhapur, people usually immerse Ganapati idols in artificial immersion tanks."
Over 3 lakh Ganesh idols are made in Kolhapur district annually, with at least 2 lakh being household idols. A span of six months is usually taken by artisans to make the idols.
In Kolhapur city, Ganesh idols are primarily made in the kumbhar galli (potter's lane) in areas like Bapat Camp, Shahupuri, and Gangawesh.
KMC provides artificial immersion tanks across areas to avoid immersion of idols in the Panchaganga river and water bodies like Rankala, Kalamba, Rajaram, and Kotitirth lakes.
Commenting on the latest development, environmentalist Uday Gaikwad said, "Kolhapur residents have long been taking the initiative to celebrate an eco-friendly Ganeshotsav since 1989. The civic administration has also supported it. Now, even artisans should switch to eco-friendly natural colours so that this festival can go totally eco-friendly here."

HC seeks suggestions for improving traffic management in Indore
Indore: The Indore bench of MP High Court on Tuesday asked local administration to make efforts to improve city's traffic management, similar to the success achieved in the cleanliness campaign. The court sought written suggestions from the state and local bodies to this effect. Justice Vivek Rusia and Justice Binod Kumar Dwivedi made these observations during hearing on a PIL filed by NGO Rajlakshmi Foundation through senior advocate Ajay Bagadia. The PIL raised concerns over uncontrolled traffic rule violations, lack of parking, narrow left turns, and encroachment on roads. Mayor and senior advocate Pushyamitra Bhargava, who was also present as amicus curiae before the court, stated, "The PIL, filed in 2019, sought improvement in Indore's traffic management. In today's hearing, Indore collector, commissioner of police, IMC commissioner, and I were present. Honourable judges have said that as Indore can become the number one city in cleanliness, why not inculcate such behavioural changes to improve traffic. The court has sought suggestions from all the concerned parties." "As Mayor, advocate, and citizen of Indore, I suggested that the court prepare a policy for e-rickshaw operation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 most beautiful women in the world Undo I also suggested making separate rules for parking of hostels, coaching classes, and hotels, along with provisions for mechanised and pit parking systems," he said, adding that a report on the positive results received by deploying 'Traffic Mitra' was also submitted. "The court emphasised running awareness campaigns. People should wear helmets and follow the traffic rules, and thus, awareness is needed. Therefore, I suggested forming a coordination committee of all the departments and the public representatives to work on traffic engineering and awareness," he said. The Mayor informed the court about plans to introduce e-mobile court vehicles in the next one-and-a-half months to help stop encroachments on roads. Bhargava, while talking to mediapersons, also revealed plans to remove existing bus stands from the city in the near future. During the hearing, commissioner of police, Santosh Singh, through govt advocate Bhuvan Gautam, informed the court about the deployment of around 467 personnel at about 120 major squares. Apart from generating awareness, the division bench of Justice Vivek Rusia and Justice Binod Kumar Dwivedi emphasised imposing heavy fines on traffic rule violators. They also mentioned that the space on roads for commuters, as early as 5 AM, gets reduced to one-fourth by evening due to vehicle parking and shopkeepers placing their articles. Bhargava informed the court that Indore has 32.95 lakh registered vehicles and around 21.55 lakh active vehicles on the road. "We assume that Indore has a population of around 22 to 33 lakh. Around 3 lakh is the migrating population," he said. To this, the court said that purchasing new vehicles can't be controlled, but old vehicles should be discarded by fixing a period of 10-15 years, like in Delhi, as they stopped giving fuel to vehicles crossing the age limit. The court was informed that the old vehicles banned in Delhi were being sold to other states, including MP. The court was also informed about a DPS school bus, which claimed lives of seven children in a road accident, was brought from Delhi after it was discarded there. In the hearing, the court was informed about the efforts and actions being taken by different departments concerned to improve traffic management in Indore.

Edu dept to deploy ‘prabodhak' teachers at anganwadi centres
Jaipur: The state education department has decided to deploy teachers as 'prabodhak' to teach children in anganwadi centres to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy in children. In the state, around 15,000 anganwadi centres are operational from schools with over five teachers. In such schools, the department has ordered that L1 or L2 level teachers, who are qualified to teach primary sections, should be deployed to teach children aged 5-6 years in anganwadi centres. "We already have mentor teachers for anganwadi centres operating along with schools, but now we are enforcing that these teachers must teach mandatorily three to four days a week. They will teach from the age-wise books prepared by Integrated Child Development Services as part of Early Childhood Care and Education, along with taking assessments mentioned in the books," said Krishna Kunal, secretary for school education. Officials said that this move has been initiated to ensure the conversion of children from attending anganwadi centres to enrolling in schools for formal education. Under this initiative, preferably a female teacher will be deployed to make children going to anganwadi centres comfortable with formal and regular education, which will help when the child starts attending regular school, "as they will have some familiar faces from before." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Officials said, that based on the results of the assessments, the department will also be able to gauge the working of teachers deployed at the anganwadi centres as mentor teachers.
