PTT Synergy to invest RM2.3bil in smart warehouses over next two years
SUNGAI BULOH: PTT Synergy Group Bhd has allocated RM2.3 billion in capital expenditure (capex) over the next two years for its automated warehouse business, which will cover the development of four new automated warehouses. PTT Synergy, whose business activities include construction as well as warehouse solutions and distribution centres, is strengthening its offerings by providing high-tech total intralogistics and industrial solutions. Group managing director Teo Swee Phin said the company has 15 automated warehouse projects in the pipeline in Malaysia and aims to increase the contribution from the new robotics segment going forward. "We have a building storage capacity of 600,000 pallets, which translates into six million square feet (sq ft) of warehouse facilities. Our goal is to increase this to two million pallets within the next three to five years,' he told reporters after the grand opening of the company's first smart logistics facility, PTT Logistics Hub 1, here today. PTT Logistics Hub 1, built on a 2.63-hectare site with a gross development value of RM180 million, features 168,000 sq ft of warehouse space and an additional 90,000 sq ft dedicated to operations. It can accommodate about 31,000 pallet positions. Currently the facility has an occupancy rate of around 70 per cent and is expected to reach full occupancy within the next two months. He explained that while PTT Synergy has three core segments, namely construction, real estate, and the upcoming robotics segment. The robotics segment, which comprises the automated warehouses, is expected to take about three years to develop, with the goal of matching the income currently generated by the construction business. "At present, our real estate segment is catching up rapidly and has already surpassed the construction segment in terms of profitability. While our construction division typically generates about RM24 million annually, the real estate segment is projected to generate RM50 million per year and targeted to reach RM100 million in the near future,' he said. Teo said that for robotics, the income generated will be comparable to that of the construction segment if it achieved its two million pallet positions over the next three to five years. "This strategic diversification is aimed at making our business more resilient and sustainable in the long run,' he added. He emphasised that each of the three segments would contribute equally to the group's income, reducing reliance on a contribution from a single segment such as construction, which is subject to volatility due to fluctuating costs and demand. Teo said that the robotic leasing model will provide recurring income for the company. Commenting on its international presence, Teo said that the company is ready to venture regionally, with the first overseas destination being Thailand. "We are targeting to begin operations in Thailand by the end of this year. While the Thai venture is still in the early stages, pending due diligence and further familiarisation with local regulatory policies, we view this as a significant step in our regional growth strategy,' he said. He disclosed that PTT Synergy has identified an 8.09-hectare land located in Rayong, Thailand, which is adjacent to a client's site. On the outlook, Teo said next year is expected to be significantly better for the group, supported by revenue contributions from all three segments. - Bernama

Malaysia steps up investment in R&D in quest to become high-tech nation by 2030
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is expanding its investment in research and development (R&D) as part of its push to become a high-technology nation by 2030, said Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal. He highlighted that Malaysia's gross expenditure on R&D (GERD) reached 1.01% of gross domestic product in 2022, a notable increase, with more than 51% contributed by the industry sector. 'Looking ahead, we are targeting GERD to reach 2.5% by 2030, in line with our national goal of transforming into a high-technology nation,' Mohammad Yusof said in his speech at the soft launch of the Asean Technology Cooperation and Development Summit 2025 today. He said the mission of the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (Mosti) is anchored in a vision to transform Malaysia from a technology user into a technology developer with global market capabilities by 2030. 'We are committed to unlocking value through innovation that is commercially viable, socially inclusive, and globally relevant.' Mohammad Yusuf said the government is accelerating real-world innovation with the National Technology and Innovation Sandbox (NTIS), providing a platform for pre-commercial technologies to be tested and adapted at scale. 'Since its inception, NTIS has supported numerous innovative solutions, focusing on applications ranging from precision drones to AI diagnostics and renewable energy systems.' Additionally, Malaysia is investing in talent as an estimated 600,000 Malaysians will need to be reskilled over the next three to five years due to artificial intelligence and automation. 'Mosti is addressing this challenge through structured training pathways, academic-industry partnerships, and regional innovation exchanges.' Mohammad Yusof said that as chair of Asean, Malaysia is committed to leading efforts that drive regional integration and forward-looking cooperation. 'One of our key priorities is to accelerate innovation and technology-driven development – not only within our borders, but across the wider Asean community.' The soft launch was attended by the embassy of China's science and technology counsellor Dr Zhao Xiangdong and second secretary for science and technology Dr Zhang Tianhang. The Asean Technology Cooperation and Development Summit 2025, organised by Intrinsic SEA, will be held alongside WE2025: Future in Motion, a three-day programme from Nov 25 to 27 organised by Qube Integrated Malaysia Sdn Bhd. The summit, to be held on Nov 25 and 26 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre, Kuala Lumpur, is expected to secure over RM200 million in innovation and investment deals. Themed 'Future in Motion,' it will focus on five pillars – future mobility and smart transportation, future healthcare and digital medicine, future consumer and digital commerce, future building and safety emergency response, and future employment and entrepreneurship. The two-day event is set to convene over 100 companies, more than 50 global investors, and 2,000 innovators and ecosystem leaders from Asean, China, Canada, Australia, the Middle East, Europe and Japan. It will feature a technology exhibition with over 100 booths highlighting innovations across key sectors. The summit is expected to attract more than 50,000 livestream viewers.

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 6): The National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 held in Sabah on August 1-3 has significantly boosted the state's profile in the agriculture sector, drawing over 300,000 visitors and generating more than RM76 million in sales. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the event — held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of HPPNK — attracted strong participation from 130 agro-based entrepreneurs and drew visitors from Sarawak, Brunei, Indonesia, and the Philippines. 'This year's event is a testament to Sabah's growing role in the nation's agri-food sector. We've seen tremendous interest and economic impact,' he said during a press conference on Sunday. Among the wide array of products showcased were local snacks, cooking pastes, frozen goods, traditional drinks, herbal and botanical items, agricultural inputs and Sabah-grown coffee. Mohamad Sabu also announced that 14 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and strategic agreements had been involving a total of RM526 million in investments across the agriculture, fisheries and energy sectors. He confirmed that his ministry will host the Malaysia Agricultural, Horticulture and Agrotourism Exhibition (MAHA) next year, alongside a smaller-scale version of HPPNK, in view of this year's milestone celebration. 'Now, we are seeing more people, especially the youth, becoming successful in agriculture. My ministry will continue efforts to show them this can be a lucrative and fulfilling field,' he said, adding that more youths from Sabah are entering the industry and inspiring others. In his speech earlier, Mohamad Sabu outlined four key focus areas of HPPNK 2025, aimed at driving structural and cultural shifts in Malaysia's agriculture sector: 1. Agro Millennia – Designed to empower youth through education, training, career development, and access to government support including grants and entrepreneurial guidance. 2. Sufficient and Guaranteed – Focused on strengthening the agro-food ecosystem through technology and sustainable practices to boost productivity and food security. 3. Madani Prosperity – Emphasising the central role of farmers, breeders and fishermen in domestic production to reduce reliance on imports. 4. Sales and Entrepreneurship – A strategic platform to promote local agro-food products and expand market reach, including international exposure.
