Oneonta AM radio station goes off the air
Once a staple of the Oneonta community, radio station 730 WDOS-AM went off the air earlier this month, according to a Federal Communications Commission filing.
A news and sports talk radio format, WDOS broadcasts as CNY News and is owned and operated by Townsquare Media Group. The internet live stream was still broadcasting as of Wednesday, June 11 at cnynews.com.
According to a report on RadioInsight.com, Townsquare said the station went silent 'due to economic conditions in the market.' Townsquare Market President Robert Wawrzyniec did not immediately return a request for comment.
Townsquare continues to maintain a presence in the Central New York area, operating FM stations Classic Hits 103.1 WZOZ, Mix 103.9 WSRK, Star 93.9 WKXZ and country music stations Big Cat 92.1 WDLA and 95.3 WBKT.
History of WDOS
Once owned by The Daily Star's predecessor company, WDOS-AM signed on at 6 p.m. December 1, 1947, and its sister station WDOS-FM signed on in early May 1948.
City historian Mark Simonson said the studios at the time were found on the top floor of the Oneonta Hotel, once a ballroom, to host live bands and other entertainment.
The original transmitter was in area of today's Home Depot and currently is located on Swart Hollow Road. WDOS started at a power of 250 watts on 1400 KC with unlimited hours, and later increased power and changed frequency to 730-AM in the 1950s.
In 1952, the station moved from downtown to a building at the corner of Chestnut and West streets. In January 1988, the building was demolished because it had structural deterioration. Radio operations moved inside The Daily Star's building next door.
Radio personalities featured over the years included 'Big Chuck' D'Imperio, who had a long-running morning radio show; Joe Campbell, called the 'Grand Old Man of Radio;' Ron Shapley, who died last month in Oneonta; and Denny Sullivan, who had a Radio Record Club show at 4:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday in the early days of the station.
Ownership of the radio station changed hands several times through the years as mergers happened with other independent stations. Townsquare acquired WDOS in the 1980s.

King to mark official birthday with Trooping the Colour parade
Military pomp and pageantry will be on display in central London to mark the milestone but the event will also remember those killed in the Air India plane crash. In 2017, Trooping was held a few days after the Grenfell Tower blaze and the loss of life was marked by a minute's silence, a decision taken by Queen Elizabeth II. The King issued a written message soon after the Air India plane crash saying he was 'desperately shocked by the terrible events' and expressing his 'deepest possible sympathy'. He was kept updated about the developing situation on Thursday and it later emerged there was a sole survivor, UK national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. Trooping the Colour will see more than 1,000 servicemen taking part in the military display who when not performing ceremonial duties are fighting soldiers. The colour – regimental flag – being trooped this year is the King's Colour of Number 7 Company, Coldstream Guards, a prestigious regiment known as the sovereign's bodyguard which is celebrating its 375th anniversary this year. The day will end with the royal family gathering on Buckingham Palace's balcony for the traditional RAF flypast.

Sam Burns fires 65 to grab US Open lead as big names stumble

EPA-EFE OAKMONT – Sam Burns matched the third-best US Open round ever fired at Oakmont, shooting a five-under 65 to seize a one-stroke lead after the second round on June 13 as big names struggled. The 28-year-old American made six birdies against a lone bogey to stand on three-under 137 after 36 holes on the punishing layout. 'It felt like I played really well. Today was really nice,' he said. 'But there's obviously a lot of golf left on a very tough course.' The only two US Open rounds at Oakmont lower than Burns' 65 were Johnny Miller's final-round 63 to win in 1973 and a 64 by Loren Roberts in the 1994 third round. American J.J. Spaun made bogeys on three of the last four holes to shoot 72 and stand second on 138 with Norway's Viktor Hovland third on 139 after a 68 – the top trio being the only players under par after 36 holes.
