Lowes CEO worth $400 million rises to top of high society at Gold Dinner - after she banned celebrities from the prestigious $3500-a-head event
The Lowes Menswear CEO, who, alongside her brother and Lowes co-owner Jeffrey Mueller is worth a cool $400 million, held court at the glamorous Gold Dinner in Sydney on Wednesday night.
Linda heads the Gold Dinner Committee alongside her son Joshua, and rules the charity event with an iron fist.
Every year an influential mix of business and philanthropic leaders attends - and the gala was once also littered with A-listers before Penn and her son banned them from the event.
In the past, celebrities like Chris Hemsworth, Roxy Jacenko, Ian Thorpe, Hamish Blake and Karl Stefanovic made appearances on the red carpet.
In 2023, a swathe of celebrities walked the red carpet, including the likes of cricket WAG Candice Warner, actor Lincoln Younes, Sunrise star Natalie Barr and Ex-NRL star Cooper Cronk.
Gold Dinner co-chair Joshua revealed ahead of the 2024 gala that the event will shun celebrities going forward, as they 'don't seem to add much value'.
'I'm always told to invite the celebrity or the famous rugby player and put the WAG on the list but it is just not our thing,' Penn explained.
'We have done it before and they end up taking up valuable space', he added.
Joshua said that the attention is usually too much on the celebrities, rather than on the purpose of the event.
On Wednesday, the only celebrities of note came in the form of Sunrise co-hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington, as well as former Wiggles performer Emma Watkins, with Sydney's wealthy elite making up most of the guest list.
The invitation-only gala is held annually at a secret location in Sydney and is given a unique theme every year.
For the first time, this year the Gold Dinner was held at the Royal Botanic Gardens' Parade Ground Lawn, set amongst Sydney's most iconic landmarks and framed by the vibrant light spectacle of Vivid Sydney.
With close proximity to Government House and iconic landmarks the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge - all being illuminated as part of the city's renowned festival of light - this year's event is themed 'Light Up a Child's Life'.
It offers guests a symbolic and immersive experience that ties directly to its cause as they aim to raise $80 million - the most ambitious target to date.
For almost three decades, the Gold Dinner in Sydney has united Australia's leaders and captains of industry to support the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network through the SCHF.
Now expanded to Perth, and with plans to hold events in the USA and UK with Australia expats, the Gold Series is recognised as Australia's most prestigious philanthropic initiative.
Sydney's Gold Dinner has raised over $90 million since its inception in 1997, directly transforming the lives of sick kids and their families by funding life-saving treatments and care.
Linda posed alongside some of her esteemed attendees, including former Deputy Leader of the Opposition Kristina Keneally.
The Lowes matriarch stood out glittering silver gown with art deco panels and semi-sheer skirting.
She added to her ensemble with a gold purse and a diamond necklace that matched her earrings.
As the co-owner and Managing Director of Lowes Menswear, Linda works full time overseeing the entire operation, which includes over 190 stores, online portals and over 1900 staff across Australia.
Linda and her dentist husband David, who founded Southern Cross Dental laboratories, have three children.
She previously told Belinda International that despite her business nous, her family is her priority.
'Look after yourself from a health and mental well-being perspective' Linda said in offering advice for working mothers.

Neighbours stars Tim Robards and April Rose Pengilly reunite in gory horror film
Neighbours stars Tim Robards and April Rose Pengily have returned to screens for a very surprising - and gory - reunion in Australian horror film Drax. The pair, who starred together as a married couple in the long-running soap, play two lovers on a date that goes pear shaped after they encounter a monstrous force. Their scene is a homecoming for fans of Neighbours, who bid farewell to Tim's character, businessman Pierce Greyson, following his shock decision to quit the show in 2020. Drax was written and directed by Australian filmmaker James Demitri, and is currently on the festival circuit. 'April and I had fun being in a very different scenario, and in US accent,' Tim said of his experience filming with April again. 'It was kind of very familiar, but also totally different. I get to play a real a**hole which is fun.... and second nature!' he laughed. April also spoke fondly of the reunion, saying: 'I've known [director] James since early in my modelling days, and obviously worked closely with Tim on Neighbours (we were married, after all!) so it was lots of fun reuniting with them both on set.' 'It's always great working with people you know as you have a shorthand way of communicating and can get stuck into the work straight away - there's no awkward 'getting to know you' phase.' Filmed in neon-lit Sydney, Drax is described as a contemporary spin on the vampire genre. It tells the tale of a disillusioned bloodsucker and artist Drax (played by David Charlie) who becomes entangled with a young skater named Marcus (Finn Middleton). Also starring in the film are Australian talents Emily Teede and Tatjana Marjanovic, with cameos from Matt Levett, Alex Pychtin, Tomi Grainger and Monique Simone. 'For me, Drax is about the question of who is the real monster when the mask comes off. It explores regrets and how people carry them, how those regrets shape us and become part of who we are,' Demitri said in a press release. April and Tim starred together on Neighbours from 2018 to 2020, initially playing lovers before their characters tied the knot in December 2019. Their union, however, was short-lived, as cracks soon began to show throughout 2020 with storylines involving loss, betrayal and distance. Their scene (pictured) is a homecoming for fans of Neighbours, who bid farewell to Tim's character, businessman Pierce Greyson, following his shock decision to quit the show in 2020 'For me, Drax is about the question of who is the real monster when the mask comes off. It explores regrets and how people carry them, how those regrets shape us and become part of who we are,' says director James Demitri By the end of that year, the couple had separated, bringing their on-screen romance to an end. Shortly after, Tim stepped away from the soap. He had originally joined the cast in 2018 for what was meant to be a short guest role, but his popularity saw the part expanded into a regular role. Tim is married to Anna Heinrich. The couple share two daughters - Elle, three, Ruby, one. Anna and Tim met on the 2013 season of The Bachelor.

Bailey Smith drops relationship bombshell and it may not be good news for new love Tammy Hembrow
Bailey Smith has shared some interesting insights into his dating life - and it may not be good news for Tammy Hembrow. The AFL star, 24, who has been spotted locking lips with the 31-year-old influencer, sat down with the We Mean Well podcast to reveal he has an age limit when it comes to relationships. Bailey revealed in the episode, recorded prior to meeting the 31-year-old, that he wouldn't date anyone over 28. The Geelong Cats star went on to admit he liked the 'chase' when it came to his romantic escapades and preferred making the first move. 'The ones you normally want aren't the ones that approach you, you know what I mean?' he said, before adding, 'A bit of a chase is good.' Bailey and Tammy have set tongues wagging over the last few weeks after being spotted on, not one, but two dates. The sports star, who is based in Victoria, flew to the Gold Coast two weekends in a row to spend time with the fitness influencer. The couple were first seen leaving hand-in-hand after a meal at swanky Asian fusion restaurant, Rick Shores, at Burleigh Heads. They were then caught making out at another restaurant. The pair were more recently spotted enjoying a romantic stroll to Nobby's Beach, where the footy player appeared to have his arm wrapped around Tammy's hips. Since Tammy's public appearances with the AFL star, her ex Matt Zukowski has admitted he felt 'hurt' watching his former partner move on so quickly after their break-up. The Love Island star also hinted he was the one to end things between them, despite speculation it was Tammy who took the lead. 'A couple of months ago, I made one of the hardest decisions of my life,' he revealed on his Where's Your Head At? podcast with Anna McEvoy. 'I decided to leave a relationship that I found was not right for me,' he continued, before adding, 'It was unhealthy for me.' Matt and Tammy got engaged in December 2023 after just three months of dating. They tied the knot almost a year later, in November 2024, but rumours of a split began to circulate earlier this year. In June, just seven months after tying the knot, the pair announced their divorce.

TV star reveals brutal fan mail after showcasing 'awful' new look
ABC News Breakfast weatherman Nate Byrne proudly unveiled his new haircut on-air earlier this month - but it seems not everyone is a fan. Nate received a tersely worded typewritten letter from a 'disappointed fan' who brutally slammed his fresh style as 'awful'. Taking to his Facebook on Tuesday, Nate shared a screenshot of the letter, which was dated 13 August. Titled 'Haircut', the fan wrote, 'Whilst I respect your right to have your hair styled as you wish, I am exercising my right to tell you that it looks juvenile and awful. 'I'll return to ABC Breakfast once it grows out. Signed - name redacted - (disappointed viewer).' Nate didn't seem to take the criticism to heart though, captioning his post, 'Proof that the art of letter-writing isn't dead!' 'Anyone have suggestions for my next do?' he also joked. Nate's new style, which appears to be a cut known as the 'Faux Hawk', features long hair on top and closely shaved hair on the sides. Facebook users responded to Nate's post by defending the weatherman's look. 'Dear Disappointed Viewer, your opinion is important, just not to anyone here. Yours sincerely, 68-year-old bald guy,' commented one fan. 'Amazing how your hairdo does not affect your ability to provide accurate, incisive and entertaining weather forecasts and excellent science information,' added another viewer. A third fan added: 'I don't like it either, but I'll defend to the death for you to look as you wish!! 'And who cares what I think about your hair anyway, ffs?!! (I'm just trying to figure out how you are so endlessly frickin' cheerful when you have to get up at sparrow's fart five days a week!)' Nate made headlines last year when he was forced to halt his report in the middle of a broadcast after suffering a panic attack live on-air. He cut short his presentation during a broadcast last August just before 6.30am, telling viewers 'I'm going to need to stop for a second'. Voice quivering, he told viewers: 'Some of you may know that I occasionally get affected by some panic attacks, and actually that's happening right now. 'Lisa (Millar), maybe I could hand back to you.' Co-host Lisa quickly took over the broadcast while Nate recovered off camera. Nate has spoken openly about his struggles with anxiety - publishing an article in 2022 where he documented his experiences of on-air panic attacks. The weather presenter was later welcomed back to the show and apologised for stepping out. 'Sorry if I gave anybody a bit of a scare,' he said.
