A priest has been left in a "serious condition" after a man who walked into church before mass attacked him with a bottle.
Fr John Murray was horrifically struck on the head at his St Patrick's Church in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, earlier today. The priest was rushed to hospital for a head injury and is in a "serious condition".
Father Murray was hit with the bottle at around 10.10am on Sunday, by a man who entered the church in the small town in County Down.
The priest had been preparing for what would have been one of his last masses in church before retiring. He was reportedly attacked in the church's sacristy before Mass, according to BelfastLive.
A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "It was reported to police at around 10.10am on Sunday, 10th August that a man had walked into the church on St Patrick's Avenue and hit the priest on his head with a bottle before leaving. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment of a head injury, where he remains in a serious condition."
Detective Chief Inspector McBurney said: "This was a completely shocking and brutal attack and has left the priest with a serious head injury.
"Our enquiries are ongoing into this incident, and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed the assault, or has any information to contact Police on 101 and quoting reference 543 of 10/08/25."
In a Facebook post, South Down MP Chris Hazzard said: "I was shocked and saddened to hear the news from Downpatrick this morning that Father Murray was attacked in St Patrick's Church.
"My thoughts and prayers are with him, and I wish him a full and speedy recovery. This cowardly attack is completely unacceptable and I condemn it unequivocally. I urge anyone with information to contact the police."
In a post on the Downpatrick 'Family Of Parishes' Facebook page, the church said: "Parishioners will be aware of an incident in St Patrick's Church earlier today. Fr Murray is currently receiving medical treatment. We thank you for your prayers and well wishes."

Iran says it detained 21,000 suspects during the June war with Israel

Iran's police detained 21,000 suspects during the 12-day air war between Israel and Iran in June, state media reported on Tuesday. A report by state TV quoted a police spokesperson, Gen. Saeed Montazeralmahdi, as saying people reported the suspects to the authorities. 'The arrest of 21,000 suspects during the 12-day war indicated high awareness and participation of people in providing security," he said. Montazeralmahdi did not elaborate on what charges the suspects might face. However, he said more than 260 were suspected of spying and other 172 were arrested because of illegal filming. He added that police put more than 1,000 checkpoints across the country during the conflict, between June 13-24. This is the first time Iran's police has given a total number of arrests during the war. In recent weeks Iran occasionally reported about the arrests of suspects on spying charges. Since the end of June, Iran has executed seven men convicted of spying for Israel, sparking fears from activists that the government could conduct a wave of executions. Israel carried out waves of airstrikes on Iran, killing nearly 1,100 people, including many military commanders. Retaliatory Iranian strikes killed 28 people in Israel.

Police identify gunman in Texas Target shooting that left three dead

Published: | Updated: The gunman who opened fire outside of a Target in Texas, killing three people, has been identified as a violent career criminal. Austin Police told the Daily Mail on Monday night Ethan Blaine Nieneker, 32, has been taken into custody in connection with the deadly shooting earlier in the day. He fled the scene in a vehicle he stole from the parking lot at the Target store on Research Boulevard but quickly crashed the stolen vehicle. At that point, police say Nieneker stole another car from a nearby Volkswagen dealership. But officers were soon able to catch up with him in South Austin, where they deployed a Taser to stop him, before taking him into custody. Police Chief Lisa Davis noted that he has a history of mental illness and a prior criminal history. Records obtained by the Daily Mail show he has been arrested numerous times since 2011, including an apprehension in August 2015 for assaulting a family member. Nieneker was also previously arrested for driving while intoxicated twice, criminal mischief and a violation of a bond or protective order. It remains unclear what may have drove Nieneker to open fire outside of the store shortly after 2pm. Medics pronounced two of the victims dead at the scene. A third victim succumbed to their injuries en route to a local hospital. One other victim suffered unrelated injuries and was treated at the scene. All four victims have not yet been identified, as shoppers and employees at Target told how they had to run for cover. 'I was inside the store, but then I hear on the radio like shots fired, so then they just told us "active shooter..." so we just ran outside, we told guests to get out,' Freyen Sagastume, an employee told KXAN. 'I thought that this only happened like in the news and stuff and then like I kind of just froze at first, but then I saw everyone running.' Meanwhile, at the nearby Jiffy Lube, employees hunkered down and locked the store's doors when they became aware there was a shooting outside. One mechanic, Paul Smith, told Spectrum Local News he saw people running from their cars in the parking lot in a panic. 'I had just gotten back from the Target like a minute before,' he recounted. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson has been informed of the shooting and is being kept abreast of developments. 'This is a devastating situation and my heart is with the victims and their families,' he wrote on X. 'While this remains an active and ongoing investigation, what I'll say is that this was a sickening, cowardly act of gun violence,' the mayor continued, adding that he is 'grateful for the quick response of our APD officers and other first responders and want to thank them for their actions to apprehend the suspect.' A spokesperson for Target also said it will be providing counseling to staff members who experienced the shooting. 'We are devastated by the violence that occurred today at our store in Austin, Texas. Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, our team in Austin and all those impacted by this tragedy,' the spokesperson said.
