Casper van Uden wins Giro d'Italia stage four in Lecce, leading an all-Dutch podium

Casper van Uden successfully gained his first-ever Grand Tour stage win with a sprint finish on stage four of the Giro d'Italia, alongside leading an all-Dutch podium. The Picnic PostNL rider went beyond fellow Dutchmen Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Maikel Zijlaard (Tudor) in a fierce race to win the competition.
In a social media post, van Uden shared the achievement to the public and captioned it as 'WE did it!🍾 Massive shout out to the boys for their hard work and all the other people involved. You never win alone 🫶 #giroditalia'
Netizens celebrated Casper's win with praise and admiration, calling him a 'golden boy' and saying the achievement was well deserved. One commented, 'Golden boy delivers! 🔥🥇' Highlights of the race
This marked the event's return to Italy after three opening stages in Albania. The riders needed to go through a 189-kilometre route from Alberobello to Lecce, which was ideal for sprinters.
Spain's Francisco Muñoz (Team Polti VisitMalta) broke away from the pack early on. At about 125km to go, there was an unfortunate crash in the main group of riders, which involved Mads Pedersen, Tom Pidcock, and Nickolas Zukowsky.
Zukowsky, who was racing his first Giro d'Italia, had to exit the race with a suspected broken collarbone.
In the final stretch, teams worked together to get their sprinters into position. With this, Casper van Uden made his move at just the right moment and sprinted to the finish, winning his first stage since June 2024.
' I didn't do it alone – we did it with the whole team. All the boys here and all the staff here, and in HQ as well. They did super work. I didn't have to do anything until 200m to go. I had a good sprint and went for it. We've done a really good job all season with the leadouts,' the athlete said of his victory.
He added, 'I knew I had to just follow Bram [Welten] and the boys – they did a super good job and I'm really happy to give them something back. I'm not surprised, and I know all the boys have a lot of belief in me.'
Van Uden's win is a big boost of confidence for his team, Picnic-PostNL, as they fight to stay in the World Tour. The Dutch team is at risk of being relegated, so the stage victory is very important at this crucial time.
Moreover, Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) leads, having seven seconds ahead of Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) in the overall standings. Mathias Vacek, Pedersen's teammate, is in third place, 14 seconds behind.

Spurs criticise online racist abuse aimed at forward Tel

Tottenham Hotspur said on Thursday that they are "disgusted" by the online racial abuse aimed at French forward Mathys Tel after their UEFA Super Cup loss against Paris Saint-Germain. Europa League winners Spurs squandered a 2-0 lead as they lost to European champions PSG 4-3 on penalties in a dramatic Super Cup in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday. Tel and Dutch defender Micky van de Ven had missed their spot-kicks for Spurs during the shootout. "We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat," Spurs said in a statement. "Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards - hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views. "We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify. We stand with you, Mathys." Tel, 20, signed for Spurs on a permanent deal after a four-month loan spell at the Premier League club from German side Bayern Munich in June.

Lateness costs Bissouma place in Spurs' Super Cup squad, Solanke fit

UDINE, Italy :Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma has been dropped from the squad for Wednesday's Super Cup clash against Paris St Germain due to his tardiness, manager Thomas Frank said. Frank also confirmed that striker Dominic Solanke will be available for the start of the new season despite featuring in only one of Spurs' pre-season friendlies due to an ankle injury. Speaking on Tuesday before the European season curtain-raiser between the Champions League winners and second-tier Europa League champions, Frank said: "Bissouma has been late several times and now this time, it was one too many. "With everything, you need to give your players a lot of love but also have demands and have consequences. And this was the consequence of that." New arrival Joao Palhinha, on loan from Bayern Munich, could play in place of Ivory Coast international Bissouma, though Tottenham will be without playmaker James Maddison, who faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an ACL injury. New manager Frank's tenure could start with a gleam of silverware if Spurs manage to defeat European champions PSG, who were beaten by Chelsea in last month's Club World Cup final. The Dane added that a lighter pre-season since Tottenham's Europa League triumph on May 21 could give his comparatively better-rested side an edge over the French team. "We have had a more normal pre-season which is what every coach would prefer. In that way, it can be an advantage. But on the flip side, they have had a long season and played a lot of games recently," Frank said. "It's the right time to face PSG. We are ready. I am 100 per cent convinced that it will be very super competitive tomorrow. "But of course, over the whole season they are in a better place to perform better. But in a single game, we will be ready." Though Spurs are without former captain Son Heung-min after his move to MLS side LAFC, Frank said their Argentine World Cup-winning defender Cristian Romero would be a key figure. "Romero is going to be a very important and experienced player for the team. He is going to be a very, very big player for us tomorrow," he said.
