Horse Power: The Lion In Winter to roar back with victory in the Betfred Derby at Epsom

Yahoo06-06-2025
It could be déjà vu for trainer Aidan O'Brien as THE LION IN WINTER can roar back in summer and provide him with a record-extending 11th victory in the Betfred Derby (In Honour Of His Highness Aga Khan IV) (No Geldings) (3.35pm) at Epsom on Saturday afternoon.

For the third year in a row the Ballydoyle maestro's winter ante-post Derby favourite is on a retrieval mission having – like Auguste Rodin in 2024 and City Of Troy 12 months ago – flopped on his seasonal return heading into the Colts' Classic.
The Lion In Winter lost his unbeaten tag on just his third start when only sixth to the reopposing Pride Of Arras, trained by Ralph Beckett, in the Dante Stakes at York last month. Unlike those two stars – who went on to land the Colts' Classic at Epsom despite 2,000 Guineas disappointment – though, The Lion In Winter will not have the assistance of Ryan Moore. He will be riding stable-mate and potential favourite Delacroix after the Dubawi colt made a much smoother return to action with victories in two of the recognised trials for the Derby – the Group Three Ballysax Stakes at the end of March and the Cashel Palace Hotel Derby Trial Stakes, formerly the Derrinstown, last month – both of which are run at Leopardstown in Ireland.

He is sure to go close to victory – along with another Coolmore runner Lambourn, who won one of the other trials – the Chester Vase on the Roodee – but he may have to play second fiddle to his stable-mate The Lion In Winter.
The son of the legendary Sea The Stars – who won the Derby in 2009 – has had injury issues since two stunning successes as a juvenile. Following a Curragh maiden win and then an even better victory in the Group Three Acomb Stakes – when he had subsequent 2,000 Guineas winner, Charlie Appleby's Ruling Court, who is vying for favouritism for a second Classic success, back in third – The Lion In Winter was off the track for the rest of the season and was late coming to hand this year.
He didn't settle in the preliminaries and early in the race in the Dante and was also stopped when making a late move giving him little chance of making a winning return behind the impressive Pride Of Arras. But he is sure to come on plenty for that return and we have seen so many of O'Brien's leading lights improving tremendously after their first run of the season. The Lion In Winter will have to settle better at Epsom, but if he does, he is arguably the horse with the most talent and potential in what is a high-quality 19-strong field for the premier Classic.
Under Colin Keane, he can improve for his return and despite being drawn widest in stall 19 he can get some of the lustre back of his juvenile runs. A case can be made for many in the field including the aforementioned Delacroix, Lambourn, Ruling Court, Pride Of Arras and the last-named's stable-mate Stanhope Gardens. But a chance is taken that The Lion In Winter can roar again and resume his progress with Derby success.

James Tate's ROYAL DRESS – set to be ridden by Godolphin jockey and Liverpool FC fan William Buick – can go a couple of places better than 12 months ago and win the Group Three Princess Elizabeth Stakes (Sponsored By Oddschecker) (1pm). The five-year-old mare was third in this mile contest 12 months ago when not getting the clearest of passages. She went on to win a Group Three contest at the Curragh and ran some good races in defeat. She was then third of four in the 1m2½f Group Two Middleton Stakes at York on her seasonal return at York last month. With that run under her belt and dropping back to an extended mile, Royal Dress can score again.
German trainer Peter Shiergen's GEOGRAPHY – set to be ridden by Christophe Soumillon – can back up her recent Group Three win in Dusseldorf with another in the Group Three Betfred Diomed Stakes (1.35pm).
GOLD STAR HERO can take the Betfred 3yo 'Dash' Handicap (2.10pm). Michael Bell's son of Starspangledbanner was unable to land a blow when drawn out wide at Chester's May Festival last month. But on this straighter track, he can be seen to better effect and can land a first win on Turf ahead of chiefly Kevin Ryan's duo Against The Wind and Cape Sovereign.
Robert Cowell's speedy MICHAELA'S BOY has a solid chance of victory in the Aston Martin 'Dash' Handicap (Heritage Handicap) (2.45pm). The five-year-old gelding won a couple of times on the all-weather over the winter but is yet to score on two starts back on Turf this season. He was fourth over course and distance behind the reopposing Spartan Arrow in April and third at Goodwood last month. A generally consistent performer, Michaela's Boy may be able to land a first success on Turf since his debut at Windsor back in April 2022. Others in with a chance in the typically-competitive Dash are Mick Appleby's seven-year-old Blind Beggar, the George Baker-trained Desert Cop and Existent from the Stuart Williams' stable.

Baker's BEAULD AS BRASS saw his winning run come to an end when third at Newbury last month after four successes this season. But he can bounce back to winning ways in the Encore Lifestyle Northern Dancer Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (4.15pm).
Andrew Balding's CHARTWELL JOCK – who was third at Ascot last month – can go a couple of places better in the Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Lester Piggott Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (5pm). While in the finale, the JRA Tokyo Trophy Handicap (5.40pm), Richard Fahey's STRIKE RED and the Mick Appleby-trained Intervention can both go well with preference just for the former to return to winning ways on his fourth start of the season.
At Musselburgh FIERY LUCY – from the Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning stablemate of Irish trainer Gavin Cromwell – can build on a recent second at Leopardstown to win the Listed Edinburgh Gin Queen Of Scots British EBF Fillies' Stakes (3.10pm).
Others who can triumph in Scotland are Ed Bethell's course and distance winner I AM ME in the Edinburgh Cup Handicap (3.50pm); another with course and distance form in the past, the Amanda Perrett-trained SIXCOR, in the Edinburgh Gin Rhubarb And Ginger Handicap (1.20pm); John and Sean Quinn's Power Of Gold in the Edinburgh Gin Classic Handicap (1.55pm); and ARRANMORE, from the Micky Hammond stable, in the finale, the Edinburgh Gin Cannonball Handicap (4.55pm).

At Doncaster Bryan Smart's last-time-out winner CASTAN can go in again in the the Daniel Jones Handicap (5.45pm); and the Mick Appleby-trained BILLYJOH can score in the Happy Birthday Nigel Kirby Handicap (7.15pm).

Disney's ESPN announces major deals with NFL, WWE, as entertainment company's profits soar

Disney's ESPN has entered into two landmark agreements just as its parent company reported strong profits and revenue in its fiscal third quarter, led by the strength of its streaming service and domestic theme parks. The NFL announced Tuesday night that it has entered into a nonbinding agreement with ESPN. Under the terms, ESPN will acquire NFL Network, NFL Fantasy and the rights to distribute the RedZone channel to cable and satellite operators and the league will get a 10% equity stake in ESPN. The league and ESPN still have to negotiate a final agreement and get approval from NFL owners. The agreement will also have to undergo regulatory approvals. "Sometimes great things take a long time to get to the point where it's right. And we both feel that it is at this stage," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a call with The Associated Press. Along with the sale of NFL Network, the NFL and ESPN will have a second nonbinding agreement where the NFL will license to ESPN certain NFL content and other intellectual property that can be used by NFL Network and other assets that have been purchased. In another major deal, The Walt Disney Company on Tuesday announced a landmark rights agreement with ESPN and the WWE. As part of the agreement, ESPN platforms will become the exclusive U.S. domestic home of all WWE Premium Live Events, including "WrestMania" and "SummerSlam," beginning in 2026. "This agreement, which features the most-significant WWE events of the year, bolsters our unprecedented content portfolio and helps drive our streaming future," Jimmy Pitaro, chairman of ESPN, said in the announcement. "We are proud to reinforce the 'E' in ESPN at such an exciting juncture in its direct-to-consumer journey. WWE Premium Live Events are renowned for exactly the type of rich storytelling, incredible feats of athleticism and can't-miss, cultural tentpole experiences that have become synonymous with ESPN," Mark Shapiro, president and COO of TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of the WWE. It also raised its full-year adjusted earnings forecast on Wednesday. The Walt Disney Co. earned $5.26 billion, or $2.92 per share, for the three months ended June 28. A year earlier it earned $2.62 billion, or $1.43 per share. Excluding certain items, earnings were $1.61 per share. This easily beat the $1.46 per share analysts polled by Zacks Investment Research were looking for. Revenue for the Burbank, California, company totaled $23.65 billion, falling slightly short of Wall Street's estimate of $23.68 billion. Disney's direct-to-consumer business, which includes Disney+ and Hulu, posted quarterly operating income of $346 million compared with a loss of $19 million a year ago. Revenue climbed 6%. The Disney+ streaming service had no change in paid subscribers domestically, which includes the U.S. and Canada. There was a 2% rise internationally, which excludes Disney+ HotStar. Total paid subscribers for Disney+ came to 128 million subscribers, up from 126 million in the second quarter. Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions totaled 183 million, up 2.6 million from the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, Disney anticipates that total Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions will increase more than 10 million compared with the third quarter, with most of the increase coming from Hulu due to the expanded Charter deal, CEO Bob Iger and Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston said in prepared remarks. The company expects a modest increase in the number of Disney+ subscribers in the fourth quarter. Iger and Johnston also said that Disney will stop reporting the number of paid subscribers for Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ streaming services because the metric has become less meaningful for evaluating the performance of its businesses. The company will stop reporting the metric for Disney+ and Hulu beginning with fiscal 2026's first quarter and will no longer report the figure for ESPN+ starting with fiscal 2025's fourth quarter. The Experiences division, which includes Disney's six global theme parks, its cruise line, merchandise and video game licensing, reported operating income increased 13% to $2.52 billion. Operating income climbed 22% at domestic parks. Operating income declined 3% for international parks and Experiences. Disney announced in May that it will build a seventh theme park in Abu Dhabi. "We have more expansions underway around the world in our parks and experiences than at any other time in our history," Iger said in a statement. "With ambitious plans ahead for all our businesses, we're not done building, and we are excited for Disney's future." For fiscal 2025, Disney now anticipates adjusted earnings of $5.85 per share. It previously predicted $5.75 per share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect full-year earnings of $5.80 per share. While Disney continues to pull levers to successfully manage all of the different components of its business, it's also working on its search for a successor to Iger, the face of Disney for most of the past two decades. Disney created a succession planning committee in 2023, but the search began in earnest last year when the company enlisted Morgan Stanley Executive Chairman James Gorman to lead the effort. Disney does have some time, as Iger agreed to a contract extension that keeps him at the company through the end of 2026. Disney is looking at internal and external candidates. The internal candidates are widely believed to include the chairman of Disney-owned ESPN, Jimmy Pitaro, Chairperson of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Josh D'Amaro, Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman and Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Dana Walden.

Gianluca Mancini: 'I would stay at Roma for life.'

Roma defender Gianluca Mancini declared his love for Giallorossi colors in a new interview with Corriere dello Sport. 'From the very beginning, Rome embraces you and draws you into this emotional vortex. They catch you out and about and talk to you about Roma, you meet them at the bar and they ask you why Roma aren't winning or how strong we are this year.' 'Roma is everywhere; it's an idea that stands on many legs, and it's wonderful. Our fans can't take to the field, so I try to do it for them. Reacting to injustice as they would.' 'Would I stay here for life? Absolutely yes. I've been here since 2019, and becoming a symbol would be a dream. I'm Roma for life, I like it.' 'A new contract? We're not talking about it yet. It's not a problem for me. There's no concern whatsoever.' 'The feelings ahead of a derby with Lazio? Your stomach churning, the anticipation almost killing you. You think, I made my debut for Roma in a derby. The rivalry wears you down, that match keeps you awake at night, you're living a nightmare week and you can't wait for it to begin.' 'Gasperini? The greatest football and tactics teacher I've ever had. On the pitch, he's a force to be reckoned with, very demanding, and never seeks excuses. With him, you raise the bar, it's inevitable.' 'Mourinho? A monster who arrived and made me say, 'Yes, he can change my story and that of all of us.' José gave us charisma, mentality, and conviction. On the pitch, I was his leader. Sometimes I overdid it, going a little too far… but I did it because I felt he would lead us to victory.' 'Budapest is a wound that causes pain to this day. I never watch images of that Europa League final, I've never rewatched that match, and when I scroll through my Instagram reels and find the videos of that penalty before my eyes, I put my phone down. We deserved that cup, that episode condemned us. I was also a negative protagonist with the own goal and a missed penalty. I will carry Budapest forever in my heart.' 'Our objective? A team like Roma can't stay out of the Champions League for so long. I've never played there.' 'Offers from Saudi? There's been some interest, some enquiries. But I told my agent that I'm too happy here. I love this club and this shirt, and I don't want to think about anything else.'

Journalist names club Chelsea have 'held talks with' over move for forgotten ace, another sale moves closer

Chelsea have held talks with Championship club Derby County over a move for Alfie Gilchrist according to The Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath. Gilchrist made his first team debut under Mauricio Pochettino, and went on to make 17 appearances in all competitions during the 2023/2024 campaign. The 21-year-old Cobham graduate impressed, and scored his first goal for the club in the 6-0 win against Everton at Stamford Bridge that season. Chelsea hold talks with Derby over Gilchrist Despite impressing the decision was taken to send Gilchrist on loan to Sheffield United last season in order to get regular first team football. Gilchrist made 32 appearances in all competitions, but the Blades ultimately missed out on promotion back to the Premier League. Gilchrist was a regular at Sheffield United last season. (Photo by) Given the competition for places at both right back and centre back, the chances of Gilchrist making it at Chelsea are slim to none, which is why the Blues are looking to move him on this summer. Chelsea are said to want around £5m for Gilchrist, and there are no shortage of suitors for the English defender. Gilchrist has reportedly been subject to approaches from clubs in Saudi Arabia, whilst there's interest from the Championship, and McGrath has provided an update. He took to and said: 'Chelsea have held talks with Derby County over a move for Alfie Gilchrist. 'The 21yo was on loan at #SUFC last season.' Chelsea sales gathering momentum Chelsea have a lot of players they are looking to move on, but they are now really starting to make progress on that side of things.
